you are right, it would have happened anyway. the planet warms up and cools down, and it's done it more than once before so why should we be surprised of this?

because its not sure whether the human race could survive another ice age.. and it will set us back thousands of years.. we have sped it up dramatically.. created something that wasnt ever there before (hole in ozone) can caused much much more problems.. ofc the earth will heal, but long after we are gone.

So youre saying a few 100 million cars driving around doesn´t make a difference. Its in the low tech countries that are overpopulated, which harms the earth most. I´d say fuck compassion, they have been given soo much cash to fix their situation. Doesn´t matter how much cash / help they are given. If they can´t adapt then what good can they do ?

on topic.. freaking awsome squid. Always been fascinated by them.

As much as I agree with you Fettoken, your statement about its the overpopulated countries who harm the earth the most, is Wrong.

Its the less populated, and richer, parts of the world who harm it the most. For example, the US alone stand for about 25%+ of the worlds polution.

I agree Eversmallx, the world will always live on, dont worry about that, instead worry about the human specie, our so called civilisation will most likely not live on if the polution and global warming and consumption keeps its curve.

well... i guess evolution is the wrong word, just the natural path of things, would sum i up better

you did pick on the minor issue there, but same gas's are produced when dead animals decompose, also, shit is another source of greenhouse gas's, anyway
george w bush is trying to eliminate cows from farting... so were all saved(thats the US contribution)

let me just clear up something that might be misinterpreted, i dont think humans are a flawless species, nor do i wish to brutalize every living thing on the planet
and global warning sure we will be held responsible for our actions, but its not like it wouldn't have happened anyway

Global warming would prob happend yeah, but we SPEED it up so god damn much. We are also overconsum the natural reasources our civilisation "need" that much, so even if we the global warming would be so bad that almost every scientistic organisations believe, we will be without alot of our natural resources ( those who we can not recycle ).. The need of speeding up the science about recycleable energyresources is great, and in need of alot more attention and money.

It's simply a case of being more restrictive over the use of fossil fuels and to slowly introduce secondary methods of providing electricity. Unfortunately, unless governments dedicate big big money (for nuclear power stations & nuclear fission - and possibly a way to find SAFER ways of conducting nuclear fission - not to mention other methods) then we are set for a temperature increase.

That said, alot of the problems in the upper atmosphere is natural too. That is why ice ages HAVE existed in the past. CO2 rates increase in the atmopshere with or without human interference. Water vapour is the main issue that is caused by natural sources. it accounts for the most problems in the upper atmosphere (iirc). Sure, changing our ways will slow it down but we're due for the problems of this situation soon anyway (perhaps not 'soon' in human years ;)).

Don't forget about the processes that occur in the earth's oceans that release a heck of a lot of pollution into the atmosphere. Volcanoes too and the decaying of land plants over time.

Finally, I don't know how it is best to tackle this issue but the Kyoto agreement and other such things will not be taken seriously by some countries. They are not likely to adheer to it's rules and even so, the effects will be minimal. I'd take a more natural approach and try to minimize deforestation (the respiration cycle takes up CO2 - getting rid of large amounts of forestry severely hurts this process). Perhaps even plant more trees in large amounts.

Not to mention, when the sea levels do rise, the sea will simply contain more CO2 - which should reduce the problem somewhat.

Ahh the joys of discussions in Biology! :D

Note: Methane gas is not really a problem as it can be burnt to provide energy if used in the right conditions. If it was controlled, it would be quite an efficient source. Not to mention that methane isn't that big a contribute to global warming as CO2 and gas-contained water vapour. I'm pretty sure rural Chinese farmers use anaerobic (or is it aerobic) respiration in their own sewage to allow the bacteria to break down the organic matter - producing methane.

yeh but by the time the sea rises we will be soon faces a nice freezing northern hemisphere.. the ice cap melting causes the imbalance between the salt water/fresh water in the gulf stream (of which keeps the northerm hemisphere warm) causing it to stop, and when it stops we have an ice age

thats fine, but instead of talking about it take action... live in darkened cave sucking the sap from the rocks... you have no clue how easy we have it, and personally if i was given the option of having no technology and having unlimited technology, i would pick tech every time, even if it meens its going to be our undoing

sure methane isn't the main problem, but its a pretty good place to start imo

shame, with technology brings destruction, each year to further develope something it costs loads.. in the end it will cost to much.

I ment to include US in that... and i also ment to say that lands with low population and somewhat rich, can evolve slowly and make better use of nature resources and decrease the harmful wastes. (or at least its wishful thinking)
Of course this doesn´t apply for every country.

It is just me or aren't those countries just like Europe once was? They just need more time to develop, China is on the right way.

I'll quote george carlin on this discussion:

"Save the planet, save the planet, bah! The planet's fine, it's the humans that are f*cked!" :D

We can't do sh*t to this planet.

75% of "pollution" towards this big scary global warming comes from housing(heat).

You all feckers live don't you? You want heat, food, etc etc? Then sh*t up about "pollution" and people destorying the planet. If you're REALLY concerned about the planet, who could by the way shake us off like a bad case of fleas, go live in a cave and eat moss. What? Not going? I'm oh so suprised.

There's also the option of being economical with your energy-use. It's not a choice between using all energy you can or not using energy at all. I agree that "save the planet" is a silly thing to say though. It should be about saving the humans who will suffer the effects of the climate changes.
