I want to vote Lib Dems but i know they won't win so i'm voting Labour because there is no way in hell i'll vote for the Torries because there are many reasons why those were voted out in favour of Labour years ago.

Congratulations on wasting your vote. Too many people think that winning it to be the be all and end all. You do realise how the parliamentary system works don't you? That representatives of all parties make up parliament, not just the winning one. Even if they won't win and you believe in their policies you should still vote for them as it can increase the numbers of seated MPs, thereby giving YOU a fair representation in parliament.

Of course, by voting for Labour you've done pretty much the exact opposite of what you want to do, meaning you will not be represented as you want to be.

Sorry Waz but it doesn't. Not in the First Past the Post system we currently have. Each constituency is a seperate entity and if you haven't voted for the winning candidate then your vote is not counted.

While I agree somewhat with your premise - if a party ( lib dems ) get more votes than another party ( labour ) but the lib dems get less seats - it exposes how flawed our current system is and is likely to produce a desire for change.

Oh yes, what I've said is true but it doesn't mean it's not shit. One of the good things that may come from a hung parliament this time around is that the Lib Dems are likely to push for a Proportional Representation system to be implemented as part of their deal with whichever side is sided with.

Everyone should remember also that under the current system if Labour come third and parliament is hung it is Gordon Brown who gets the first option to attempt to reach a deal and form a government. That is how fucked up our system is.

I dislike PR _more_ than FPTP - because it eliminates non-party candidates from having a hope in hell of getting elected.

I think my favourite option is STV ( single transferable vote ) so if my first choice is in last place it get's transferred to my second choice - until you end up eliminating all last place parties and ending up with a winner.

It means I can happily vote knowing I won't "let in the party I don't want".

I was using win as a party (e.g. Lib Dems to win and come into power), not local constituencies. My point still stands, he has not voted for someone to represent him. So what I meant by my post was that he has a good chance of being represented in parliament by voting correctly. By voting the way he has done, he will never be represented in the way he wishes.

I think people who vote tactically for a party they don't like in an attempt just to screw over a competing party deserve what they get and ultimately share the blame in supporting a flawed voting system.

Tell us these many reasons and why they still apply today? Jesus christ, I want people to vote, but if this is the reasoning they use when the go to cross a box, I'd rather they didn't.
