yeah I heard about this.
a very large pile of horse-doody if you ask me.
imho, if the supply of, and access to guns [weapons of all kind actually] was better regulated [totally banned/prohibited/forbidden] the totall amount of gun-related incedents would drop dramaticly and stuff like this just wouldn't happen.

By American rule, I should be about ready to go on a massacre at college now, becuase I listen to metal music and don't quite live the ordinary teen lifestyle.

I think Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) had the irony right when they posted a strip simply saying, "Guns don't kill people. People who play video games kill people."

But seriously. What a bunch of muppets. It's very sad that their children are dead, but isn't it really just clutching at straws to suggest a computer game's content was responsible for the shootings? How many of you guys out there played "war" in the playground? Getting sticks and running around pretending to shoot people? Now how many of you have got hold of a gun and gone on a real life massacre killing spree? None? That's a shock...
What about adults who indulge in paintball? Surely the point is the same as a computer game...shoot the opposition. The consequences are the same, if not more severe in paintball. No one dies in either case but in paintball you'll most liekly come away with bruises. Now how many of you out there who've played paintball at one time or another have subsequently gone out and blown your school mates / collegues head off with a gun? None again? There's a surprise.
When are people going to GET A FUCKING CLUE? IF, and that's a BIG IF, people ARE being influenced by comupter games enough that they want to go out and kill people then surely these people are unstable enough in other areas of their life that the chances are they'd go and do it anyway without any external help. And also, where the hell are the support networks and authorities that are set up to notice these sorts of things? It's got to the stage in schools where if someone's a fucking nut case, they're described by wanking politically correct people as "Socially challenged" or some bollox. Takr the fucking blame and stop passing the buck. Games don't cause people to kill others. People decide ALL BY THEMSELVES.

Hmmm so, according to the press, gamers are an intelligent bunch people who massacre everyone :D

Why don't they just leave our beloved pastime alone?

Well apparently we're all cold blooded killers...and from the looks of it, we're damn good at it. What's the body count at the schools now? They'll all be grovelling to us when war breaks out. We shall be the saviours! MWAHAHAHAHA!
*ahem*

OMFG what a complete pile of fucking SHITE!!!

"Absent the combination of extremely violent video games and these boys' incredibly deep involvement, use of and addiction to these games and the boys' basic personalities, these murders and this massacre would not have occurred."

err.... no. Absent the use of an abundance of GUN SALES in USA and that massacre would not have occured.

STUPID TWATS!

Next thing you know, people will be sueing the makers of "chess" because there is a possibility that it might have inspired Hitler to invade the rest of europe.

I think it's wrong to say out right that computer games have no influence on us whatsoever. If you think that your behaviour is not at all affected by pretending to shoot people for hours a day, then you're deluding yourself.

I'm not saying that Doom alone caused these guys to go off and kill as many people as they could, I'm saying that it was part of the problem.
I don't agree that holding a mouse and clicking the button is anything like firing a real gun, which is what these anti-game violence people keep saying. However, I do think that it's going to put ideas into people's heads, and I think there's a big gap between playing 'war' with your mates as a kid, and pretending to shoot people you're probably never going to meet with an accurate graphical representation of a Colt Carbine.
Actually, someone sent me a URL of info about the Colt yesterday, and I looked at the picture with a weird feeling of familiarity. I mean, I reckon if someone gave me one of those things, I'd hold it like it was the most natural thing in the world, just because it looks identical to its fictional representation in Counterstrike. If that's not evidence of the disturbing levels of realism that current games are reaching for, I don't know what is.

Again - I'm not saying that games are the Devil's work, I'm not saying that we're all going to turn into bloodthirsty murderers or that I'm going to buy an m4a1 and go on a rampage with it :) . I'm also not saying that this law suit is a good idea. I'm simply saying that we have to acknowledge that computer games are an influence on our lives, and the lives of those high school murderers who played them. Perhaps not a huge influence, indeed probably quite small in comparison to other things. But to dismiss them as harmless is just wrong.

Er, was there a character called Arlene in Doom? (In the BBC news article). I played Doom far more than was healthy, even chose a pump action paintball gun instead of a semi-automatic cos it was more like the shotgun in Doom. But I dont remember a character called Arlene. Is this the uneducated moral majority spreading shite again? It very well could be....

Why blame games?? What about TV, films and popular music by artists like Eminem?

Society as a whole must carry the burden of creating children who don't see the value of another's life.

You rescue a character called Arlene in e1m11, apparently. About the closest to a plot Doom ever got, if so :)

The parents blame computer games, TV, music etc because of a near global case of passing the buck.
They will blame Eminiem for telling his life story but they will not blame themselves. They cannot get it into their tiny little minds that having nationwide campaigns to trumpet the need for the average homeowner to own an arsenal of weaponary will have a debilitating effect on the society they live in.

They do not grasp the fact that teaching their children to handle a gun at age 5 might just produce something nasty later on in life.

Too many parents, especially the Americans, rely on the media to bring up their children, and then complain at that same media when something goes wrong. They take little action in the childs upbringing, but suddenly decide to become strong parents and shout at society AFTER the massacre.

Too late, I'm afraid.

The media should be taken for what it is: Entertainment and nothing more.

It happens with all mass-media. It happened with films and radio and tv and music. Ppl always want to blame someone else rather than the individual who committed the act (especially if they're already dead.) Laywers who realise that games companies have more money than the kids parents encourage it as well. It's human nature. Chances are it will blow over...

:(

Yeah, classic. And of course things like Metal Gear Solid 2 will be overlooked, as it's a console game, and it's acceptable to portray (relatively) accurate violent situations on a console with "SONY" stamped on the front....
