The main problem is that the gaming industry is such an easy target... compared to the spout of all crap: Hollywood.
An industry which glorifies the killing of people followed by a 'hasta la vista baby' or 'do you feel lucky punk' or a
'funny' exchange between the gunners doesn't seem to me like a good way to condemn violence. Ofcourse Hollywood will also say that watching a movie is a different matter than going out and killing some1, but the people forget Arnie or Rambo are 'role models' for kids.
You also notice the loads of cash the gun industry and the gun lobby in the US (NRA) pile into these productions -> guns are cool kids...
Also the smoking industry piles in lots of cash when the male/ female lead lights up in front of the camera's -> smokin' is cool kids.

Er, was there a character called Arlene in Doom? (In the BBC news article). I played Doom far more than was healthy, even chose a pump action paintball gun instead of a semi-automatic cos it was more like the shotgun in Doom. But I dont remember a character called Arlene. Is this the uneducated moral majority spreading shite again? It very well could be....

You rescue a character called Arlene in e1m11, apparently. About the closest to a plot Doom ever got, if so :)

Thats shite. episode 1 only had 9 maps, and I certainly dont remember a hostage rescue.

Whichever people people said it was a case of just passing the buck - I think you are almost certainly right. I say almost because anything can happen in the US so certainty cannot be confirmed.

The fact is, parents are supposed to be the ones who bring up their kids. They are supposed to have the power to censor things which arent suitable for them. EG - Violent computer games. They have 15 certificates on them dont they? Then dont buy your son the goddam game!!
Similarly - "Parental Guidance - This recording contains explicit lyrics", ahem, hands up the guiding parent?
And finally, the big one - dont buy your son a gun if you dont expect him to fire it! - Mind, that is the "most democratic constitution in the world" for you. The right to life, and the right to blow someone away.

*some* Americans seem to be the sorts of people who need lables on their computers warning them "Do not attempt to operate from the inside". Not all, but the ones we are talking about now.

Also, didnt we have this same fuss with Power Rangers?

Novels? Someone actually put THAT much thought into the game? Games like Doom don't actually NEED a plot. It's just "kill all the monsters that get in your way to finding the key to the door at the end of the level".

Ur right Shovel.

I posted my thoughts in another topic about this subject.

When I was a young kid 10 to 16 years of age, my mother would always be there when we came from school. We'd do some homework, followed by the inevitable games on our Vic20/ C64. Manic games like Summer games etc were fun but we had some violent games at that time for those machines. Not the horrid stuff of SoF tbh.
My mother would always look over our shoulders and check what we were doing, and even play the game with us if she liked it. OK, that was in the pre-internet days, but she watched what we did and she was there when we needed her. Eventhough my father had died 5 years before and she had to raise two little kids on her own through the wonderful years called puberty, she took the time for us.

Right now the feeling I'm getting is the fact that 'parents' these days are worried about a lot of things mainly regarding how to shovel in as many dollars/ pounds (insert local currency here) possible and oh yeah... we do have kids don't we??? I'm no parent myself, perhaps I might decide to, perhaps not, but I feel that I'd like to raise my kids myself and not have a day care center do the upbringing for me.

And I think the main problem in the US are the Amendments. It's the ideal way for every industry to hide behind (freedom of speech and right to bear arms!) and blame the gov for keeping the amendments in the constitution. But if a group tries to get these amendments out of the law, all hell breaks lose because only a commie bastard would do such a thing.

I'm very glad we don't have these laws in Holland regarding firearms, so we can't accidently shoot our loved ones...

America is stuck in a vicious cycle at the moment, no one can take on the NRA cause for some reason they seem to love guns. It is I suppose democratic that they have the freedom to like what they like - but lets face it, democracy can be shit sometimes, cause I think we can agree, people are stupid.

"Democracy doesn't work !" : Kent Brockman, The Simpsons.

Ppl who defend the right to own guns are often the same ppl who want games banned. Fooked up init :)

It's the blind following of the constituition. Some ancient rule that was made so that americans could protect themselves from any invading english. I think it's a tad out of date now, and something should be done. The problem is, no politician suggesting that guns should be banned/much harder to come by, is ever gunna make it to president. The average thick american is never gunna go for it.

There is also the funding politicians get from the gun industry during their election campagins for the senate or even for the white house, which means they'll always owe the industry. Thats the power of the gun lobby. Never mind all other lobbies.
I mean look at Bush and his giving all sort of rights to the power industry at the moment. We are fooked.

Harry Potter is about witchcraft and sorcery.

I have always grown up thinking witches were evil.

It's just bad PR previously. They have new strategy in marketing and are now presented as good hence the new wave of children and adult series with good witches in them.
My old school head mistress was an evil witch thuogh.
