MIGHT be a virus. But don't quote me on that. Best thing to do is go to google and do a searchfor online virus checkers. They'll download little apps and tell you if you're infected. I think most of them are smart enough not to be closed by any infections.

My dad had a virus about a year or so ago. It modified the winsock.dll file and used to crash IE if it ever started to load a page containing certain words : symantec, norton, mcaffee etc etc.

The can be a right pain in the arse some times.

I don't trust norton any more after it completely destroyed a winXP install....

I still use Norton AV 2000, the auto-upgrade actually puts it at 2001 :)

AFAIK NAV doesn't like working with ZIP managers, if you have some sort of automatic ZIP file extractor in the systray it will need to be disabled.

Heh every bugbear infection ive seen hasnt closed the av running. If it aint a bug bear infection that sounds like a Klez one, but I would hope your definitions arnt that old :)

I use AVG and once a day check for updates. Where once a month used to be enough to check for new ones, I set all my customers PC's on once a day.

I prefer McAfee to Norton...it works in the background a lot more efficiently

Mcafee still has some notorius installation problems though. One being that if you install the trial and use it untill it expires and then purchase a copy from a store and try to install it ( yes after unistalling the demo) it wont work.

You need to be a bit of a reg wizard to sort out the problem, which most users arent........waydago Mcafee:clap:

It also manages to make its interface worse with every release. More so than Norton do (which is impressive since NAVs interface is cack).

I had to give up on McAfee many years ago when I upgraded to an Athlon with a VIA chipset, the scanner refused to access the boot sector, apparently McAfee were a bit slow on modern technology at the time.

At £lots/year licence ? I think not.

Unless of course you work at a company that uses it and you can transfer the database ;)
