So, No Smoking Day rears it's ugly head once more... is anybody taking this seriously and using it to actually quit? How many smokers have had a cigarette already today (if you didn't know about it, then I guess you're ok). I haven't smoked yet today, but that's more because there's no smoking inside my house (I need to go out the back door) and I just dragged my sorry ass out of bed...

Last year I didn't find out until about 9pm which, considering I'd already hacked and coughed my way through a pack of 20, wasn't the best approach towards not smoking anymore. :)

Been loads of adverts on TV trying to get people to quit lately. Not sure how effective they are at making people quit but I think they'll be pretty good at preventing people starting in the first place. Life has enough problems without creating your own by forcing chemicals into your body tbh :/

Gave up smoking 18 months ago, went to NHS smoking cessation group & used patches - far more effective than any 1-day, spur-of-the-moment quit attempt isever going to be. It was well organised, helpful, supportive, the staff were knowledgable and the patches (or whatever nicotine replacement therapy you wanted) was available on prescription so it was a damned sight cheaper than over the counter.

Can't recommend it highly enough if anyone's serious about giving up smoking.

Don't you need quite a (un)healthy habbit in order to get patches and things on perscription though ?

it's funny how people who don't smoke are like:

"quit smoking man, duh"

and the peopel who do smoke are like:

"you can't just quit, duh"

im a non smoker, when i see the adverts on TV and the words "Smoking Kills" on packs it kinda has an impact...

Solution

I'd hate people to give up smoking, otherwise the government would tax me instead (I gave up about 15 years ago).

Nope. All you have to do is turn up to the group meetings every week to get your voucher.

The one thing about the cessation groups is that they're pretty much just for people who are serious about wanting to give up. They're clear about this from the start and they say that if you think you might not be ready to seriously give it your best shot then no offence, but they'd prefer you to come back another time when you are committed.

I noticed that the vast majority of people at the group were fairly heavy smokers (20+/day) but there were some low-level addicts too and they made no distinction between us.

I quit a while ago. Don't know how long, but long enough to reach the stage where I can't tell you exactly how many days I've been 'without'. Nearing 2 months though.

And yes, it is perfectly possible to 'just quit'. It's as simple as not buying cigarettes. If you don't ever think about them, it's not a problem, and if you've got a 'routine' you smoke in, simply break that routine so you're doing something different - so you don't have to think about smoking while doing it.

Of course it is. I just quit.

Anyway, what is this sheep like thing about a particular day you've got to give up smoking on? Are you so effected by such things you'll feel guilty about smoking for just one day. Who decides what day that is anyway ?

If you want to give up, then do so, if you dont, I dont mind either way :)

Personally I would have thought all the dead people may help you make up your mind easier than some special day to do it on :)

my mum had been smoking for a good 25 years and one day she just said "fuck this" threw her rizla and 1/2 ounce of golden virginia away and hasnt smoke since. If i ever start smoking i want to quit like that.

it CAN be done, just most ppl are too pussey to go cold turkey. Only takes a week or two for the worst but to pass then its just not putting on 5stone which many smokers seem to do after quitting (or trying and failing cos they pansies)

I don't smoke, but I think addiction to certain things isn't quite at the same 'level' for everybody. My parents both quit on the same day, and didn't smoke a single fag ever since. This was over 20 years ago.

For other people, its not so easy. If it was, nobody would be smoking.

I started having the occasional deathstick a couple of months ago, I think due to stress at work. This was after not smoking a single one for a good ~5 years.

I'm back off them again now, and I want things to stay that way.

well ive been smoking 20 a day for about 18 years or so and tbh i have no intention of giving up

i do feel though that these "new" laws being bought in to ban people from smoking in public places/work are an infringment on my civil liberties(Fire hazards excluded)

and as for no smoking day well you can shove it up your ass and fook off while your doing it ;)

Shit Trem, that's bad. :( Dealing with the loss of a parent is definitely in the top five of "the hardest things you'll have to deal with in your life". It happened to me when I was 10, and I didn't really know what was going on. It's affected my life since (obviously) but my mum has done a pretty good job bringing me and my brother up. :) Heartfelt condolences to you and your family, and you keep smoking as long as you need to.

Anyway, I think it's a good idea to have a non smoking day. It gives some of the weaker minded people a target to quit (if everyone found out about it before the actual day, heh) with the knowledge that loads of other faceless people are trying to quit on the same day. I bollocksed it up this year as well, sparking up a cigarette without even thinking what day it is, but I'm sure I'll quit this year sometime. I'm living in a non-smoking house at the moment, and going outside for a fag is a real pain in the ass - it's help me cut down to about 10-15 a day, which is nice. :)

Ouch, that's harsh Trem :( I can't even pretend to understand the pain you're going through. You have my deepest sympathies.

However, if you really want to quit smoking, and you were planning to do it now, then maybe you still can. Ask yourself this - do you really need nicotine to get yourself through these hard times? Perhaps now, with the help and support of loved ones (and a bunch of geeks on an online forum ;)) you can give up smoking.

And think how proud of yourself you'll be able to feel if you succeed.

Obviously no-one will think the worse of you if you do decide to postpone giving up, but do consider it.

Take care of yourself.

My condolencies Trem, it's never nice to hear someone lose a parent. Stiff upper lip old boy.

And as for No Smoking Day......pffffft, I am still enjoying my cigarettes far too much to quit - i don't see why I should quit something I enjoy. They should be able to cure cancer by the time I reach that age anyway :) So In celebration of No Smoking day I went through 30 Marlboro Lights and several joints. I love getting into the spirit of things :)
