I always wanted a Voodoo 5. By the time I got round to getting one 3dfx had gone belly under :(

I'm not actually an ATi fan, in a 3dfx fan (still got SLI in me pootah - the P4 drives it nicely). But as 3dfx are no longer with us......

3DFX made some good boards...

I'm still running my PC with a V3 3500 (The one with the blue dongle thing). It's great :)

Not only do I get 3DFX in games, but I get to capture from my camcorder (MPG and JPGs), but I can put my screen out onto a TV. So I can watch my *cough*downloaded*cough* movies on me TV from the comfort of my bed rather than the stool :)

My fiance has a V3 3000 as does my bro. They're solid.

Hrumph... People paid over $700USD for the only Voodoo1 SLI card ever produced. (Obsidian 100SB), I can see someone paying $1500 for this thing.

actually... I wouldn't have a problem paying $1500+ for a viddy card if it were an Integraph/3DLabs Wildcat of some sort. Otherwise, it's outta the question. (I nabbed my Fire GL2000 for $60 instead of the $1300 retail price)

the FireGL2000 completely sucked azz at GLQuake. I cannot stress to you how much it sucked. It sucked more than anything had ever sucked before!

The Wildcat's should be better though. They're designed to throw up textured polygons at a good rate, which is something the older cards choke on. Most high end cards are designed for lit, shaded raw polygons. They can throw 'em up at incredible speeds as long as they're not textured. The older game chipsets were good for textures, but choked when it came to complex geometry and lighting.

The Geforce changed all of that.

(for the record, the Geforce is still unsuitable for high end 3D work as it's image quality pales to the Wildcat or any other high end chipset. The Quadro, however, rectifies that).

I remember that by doing a fairly simple mod to the GF you could turn it into a Quadro :)

If memory serves me, the Quadro is a fairly shite Professional OpenGL card. FireGL's and Wildcats are much better.

FireGL1 and the Oxygen cards paled to the Quadro and Quadro2. The Quadro3 will probably spank everything short of a wildcat.

Thats cos FireGL 1 is about 7 years old.

FireGL 3 and it's sucessor, FireGl 8800 rape Quadros without lube.

FireGLs still won many benchmarks due to better drivers but couldn't win in the raw fill rate dependant ones iirc.

the FireGL1 came out 2 years ago. You're thinking of the FireGL1000 (Permedia2 based). The FireGL 1 came out not long after the original GeForce.

Here's how it went:

FireGL
FireGL1000 - Permedia2
FireGL2000 - Glint 300sx (1997)
FireGL3000 - Glint 500tx (1998)
FireGL4000 - Mitsubishi 3DPro/2mp (1998)

Then there was the "rebirth" of the FireGL line with:

FireGL1 - IBM 256-bit Graphics Rasterizer
FireGL2 - IBM RC 1000 256-bit Graphics Rasterizer and GT1000 hardware geometry engine
FireGL3 - IBM Chipset: RC 1000 256-bit Graphics Rasterizer and GT1000 hardware geometry engine (dual display)
FireGL4 - IBM Chipset: RC 1000 256-bit Graphics Rasterizer and GT1000 hardware geometry engine (dual display)
