I'm new to the game and would like some advice about what to do.

Well pretty new, i played a 14 day US version more than 6 months ago which had the new graphics engine, i then try'd 14 day UK version, which didn't have the new graphics engine and was disappointed, so i bought the complete box set, but then wow came out and i never got around to playing it....after playing wow(got bored quickly), eve, starwars, i'm gonna give daoc a try.

I've bought the complete box set in the uk, so i have all the expansions apart from the new one comming out of course.

I'd like to know what server to join, I'm not really into pvp really, more pve, but I wouldn't rule out pvp.

I'd also like to join an established guild from the start, so if ur looking for a new player ;)

Also what character should I create, i want to get into crafting items as well, maybe armor, weapons etc.

I've let the client update, but are there any updates i should be downloading from the site?

Regards.
Jimmy.

Hey

First of all welcome,

The update client has everything you need to get started but I would get this Pack to make the game more enjoyable when you first start up as it upgrades the new towns graphics.

IF you like PvE then Albion is a nice realm to join, followed by Hiberna, as for servers I would choose Prydwen as a personal preference..but make sure you roll a char on Excalibur in a different realm as clustering is on its way, which means if you dont have a char on exclaibur or Prydwen by the time it hits you won't be able to make one there.

The game has a rich PvE end-game so it will keep yhou busy for a while, but daoc PvP is the best in any MMORPG around and you will be missing out if you don't try it.

If rolling Albion/Prydwen then contact guilds like "The Dragon Senate" They are always willing to help out new players and such like.

for server joining, makes very little difference with clustering due, tho i would make sure you roll on 2 different realms asap before you lose the chance to

for realm , you can choose 2 out of the 3, go for the ones u like the look of rather than worrying about anything else, dont be put off by people saying there are too many people or anything, as they so often do

the housing and new frontiers free addons are included in catacombs so its all there

each type of crafting is limited to certain classes, cant find the link atm, sure someone else can provide it

um, think thats about it :)

About crafting. You should not expect to be able to craft items for yourself while you level. You simply won't have money enough for that. Instead rely on Aurulite items from Catacombs.

Once you gain level 40+, you will have more money and thus be able to pick up a craft.

welcome to daoc.. take 30 mins to read bout each class and what each realm has to offer.. the game really feels best if you play the realm you like the most.

so.. first thing you need to ask yourself.. what mythology do you enjoy the most? albions "king arthur", hibernias celtic mythology, or midgards "thor&odin and all those thingys".

remember one thing.. there are certain classes in this game that is called "hybrids", hybrid means they can do things from several classes, but never as good as the other classes. so unless you want a role as a "last option", then dont roll a hybrid. one exception though is hibernias wardens, since they have so much utility they are a part of every "perfect" group, be it pve or rvr. ill excplain a bit further,

you have thanes/valkyns from midgard: these can tank and cast magic, but not as good as a normal tank or a normal caster. the thing that makes thanes /valks better is they get a selfbuff to help midgard in pve in a later patch, but you still wont get alot of rvr-groups with such a class.

in albion you have friars, friars can tank/do damage and heal. this class is a "full group in itself" but still, not so viable in other objects of the game, and not many people set a spot in rvr-group for this class even though they do have their special abilities, mainly because if you want a dmg-dealer/tank . you get one.. theres a saying that "jack of all trades, master of none". wich really fit in this situation.. also theres not many people leveling from 1 to 20 anymore since we can do /level 20 and get a instant level 20 char. so make sure you have a class that can manage to solo alot or you will be in for a really REALLY boring game.

there are some "leveling-gods" in the game, wich excels at leveling fast and easy as soon as you get the hang of it. classes like:

albion:
necromancers
cabalists
sorcerers

hibernia:
enchanters
warden (atleast at semi-high to high levels, because you can afk-level aswell as solo well)

midgard:
spiritmasters (darkness spiritmaster up to level 40 then respec to suppression)
bonedancers (really boring but really easy)
warlocks (atleast from level 15ish to level 50) even though everyone will talk how no-skill you are for playing a warlock, its a really easy class to level and i found the pve part of playing a warlock fun.

these are the classes that i think is the easiest to level up. and yes most of them are casters except wardens because wardens are ... really cool and really useful for any group.
disclaimer: i might be a ravin lunatic that only wants to ruin yer game-experience, but i also might not.. .P

My experience is contrary to this. I had an LGM Tailor (the cheapest to do) before my first toon hit lvl40. If you keep your material skills just ahead of your level you can salvage & tinker as you go (which also means you can farm for longer without emptying your backpack.)

Thanks for the many replies.

Why is it important to roll chars on different realms?

Sometime in the near (maybe) future, the Pryd and Excal servers will be merged together. This means, you could roll chars on different realms, then when the cluster comes in, you can fight your realm mates on the other realms :p

If you don’t roll in a realm on both servers now, you won’t be able to once they are clustered.

Right i get it now....unlike wow you can only have good or evil, but if i create a good on Pryd and an evil on Excal, i will then be able to have both on the combined server?

Are those the only 2 servers in europe?

Regards.

There are only 2 English servers in Europe yes, the game population wise is MUCH smaller than WoW, but I find that leads to a much better community instead of just being in a sea of anon's you know who you hate, fear and like on a personal level.

there's also Camlann the PvP server but that's a pretty nasty place ;) it's not like WoW pvp - it's brutal. Fun if you like that sort of thing...

Dunno if you've read much on the background but it's not so much good and evil but "red, green and blue" - all three sides have their own mythologies/histories based on arthurian, celtic (think cuchulainn and the red branch) and norse (thor and odin et al) mythology for albion, hibernia and midgard respectively, and all three sides are pretty much the bad guy (and the good guys - depends who you ask) ;) fighting over territory and magical relics etc.

Currently Prydwen and Excalibur are two separate servers - if you roll albion on excalibur you can't be hibernia or midgard on there - it's like the WoW good/evil there.

There's plans afoot to make them a cluster, but if you're already in hibernia on prydwen and albion on excalibur you'll still be able to play hibernia on prydwen and albion on excalibur - despite the servers being joined at the hip (the frontiers are merged, and you can port between them - it's not a complete server merge). There's a 1 hour delay in relogging to stop people passing over info or jumping ship (e.g. you're on hibernia and decide you want to go help albion defend... you have to wait an hour).

Pick two you like the sound of and try some chars out - if you don't set up an alt on the other server before cluster it's not the end of the world - I've managed to get all of about 10 hours of play time on hibernia/prydwen since I started playing 3 and a half years ago.... (rarely play outside albion/excalibur) but some people like to have the option of different realms.

Well i've created a Albion Human Mage on Excal, i hope that's not a bad choice.

Any suggestions for a character on Pryd?

Regards.

you can be either a sorceror or a cabalist at lvl 5 with your mage jimmy :)

dunno if you understand anything of what's being said there, but it might give you an idea:

cabalist character builder:
http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder2.cfm?Cabalist

sorceror character builder:
http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder2.cfm?Sorcerer

on those pages you can see what spells you can get in each branch..there's "baseline" and "specialised" spells: baseline spells are spells you will automatically get when you level. "specialised" or specline spells are spells you will get if you accumulate the points needed for that spell in its specific line(does that make sense?)

for example:
As a cabalist, you made enough exp to ding level 15..you have put all of your previous points in "spirit". Now when you go visit your trainer and spec the 15points you just got from leveling in spirit, you will get a new spell, which is a damage add for your pet in this case.

Personally I would make a cabalist and spec him full spirit . once you are level 12 you get the sapphire simulacrum, which randomly casts a lifetap on its opponents. It's great since it can heal itself with it, and automatically kill tougher monsters easier. You also get some pet buffs that help him hit harder/survive longer :) Once you have more than 22spirit spec, you get a body resist debuff(-10% body resist on an enemy) which is handy if you're running around with a body cabbie/sorceror :)

Might be boring at times, but it's a great way to make your first high level character :)

Hope this helps you out a bit, sorry for the awful english :p

I have question too. Is it possible to erase quests from your journal that you can't or won't complete?

No, you cannot erase quests from your journal. ( Everyone of them can be completed though, if you spend enough time/find enough friends to do them with. )

Not at the moment. However, some time after Darkness Rising, we may get the fix that they may put in in the US :

"In the past, the in-game CS team has been able to clear some unwanted quests from your journal. Right now, with all the new quests (and the code limitation about only being able to have twenty pendings quests at a time), we have hundreds of appeals requesting clearances. A single clearance isn't just a matter of pressing a single button - and it's not something any but the most senior CSRs have the power to do, for very good reasons.

As I understand it, we're going to put in an automatic quest clearing "thingy" for you, but that's not a thing we can simply wave a hand and put in the game. Please be patient for a week or so until we can get this solution implemented, and please understand why the CSRs are not responding to the appeals requesting clearances."

That's from this week's news in the US.
