New TV

Right.. I want a new tv for my bedroom, I'll be using it to play on my Wii mostly, im considering getting an Xbox 360 at some point, or perhaps a PS3 is something like FF7 gets rereleased.

My pc is quite a way away from where the TV would be (im hoping to mount it on the wall so flatscreen would be best), because I think I want to play DvD's on it though my pc and things.

Im not sure how much I want to spend, I dont think I could justify spending a huge amount, but I do want a decent screen, theres no point paying a bit less and having a crappy screen.

Size? What do you recommend? Any size would fit because its quite a big wall, but I dont want it to be too expensive.. All I require is to be able to easily play 2Player (or maybe 4) on my Wii without having really tiny split screens.

I am actually considering that but they're so confusing! My bedroom would be perfect I think, I have a large unused wall ... Would this work with the Wii? What projectors can you recommend?

Also, is it projected in a straight line or can you adjust the postion? because when playing dvds and things i'd like to be able to have it straight in front of me (projector would be above my head projecting forward) ... but for playing the wii i'd want the image moved to the left a bit rather than centered on my wall, as I need space to dance around waving my arm :D

Well it really would help to know your budget, and the size you'd like?

Well at a guess 32" will be enough unless anybody wants to suggest otherwise..

Budget im not sure, certainly under £1000.. I have seen http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?sku=093217 and it has great reviews, it was more than I expected to spend but it does sound good.

Im just wondering which the better choice would be, a LCD screen or a projector..

The "keystone" feature of a projector allows you to have it at an angle and adjust the image it is projecting so it appears straight.

But it's rare that they'll compensate for left/right adjustments - usually it's just up down. Given your requirements it's probably not worth going for a projector, Earl.

My Z2 has a lense shift letting me move the image left and right which is quite handy

So how expensive would I need to go if I was to get a projector? As I say I will be mostly playing dvds or playing on Wii (or 360 if I get one).. Well thats assuming you can plug a wii in to a projector? :p

What is the difference between plasma and lcd, what are the pros and cons of both?

I was going to start a new thread on this but I will just hijack this one instead :D

There's very little difference really aside from how they display the picture so i'm going to condense it to as simple a form as I can;

If you're going to use the screen connected to a pc at all for pc type things, go LCD.

If it's going to be purely for home cinema, movies and the like, go Plasma.

The arguments for and against each display type don't really strike me as compelling either way now in all honesty.

You can get fairly decent projectors for about 700 quid nowadays, screens about 100. The one I went for in an Infocus IN76 - 1200 quid and it's utterly uber. The screen I got was 160, but it's a grey glass bead 106". It r nice.

If your getting a new screen Trem, then make sure it is a Full HD screen capable of displaying 1080p sources.

I am getting a new telly for the front room. It will be at least 42" and I do kinda want one of the Pioneers with the seperate connection/tuner box thing so I don't have to mess behind the telly which will be on the wall.

It needs to be viewed on angles as well as straight on, I thought LCD was better for that than plasma thats why I asked.

for LCDS sony barvia tvs is top of the pile atm. and dont suffer from naff viewing angles you mention

for plasmas, pioneer, fujitsu and the plasma panels by panasonic are worth looking at if you are going the plasmas way

ARRGGHHHH!!

Then I have to choose all the other stuff that goes with them. I really want the seperate connection box thingy that some Pioneers have, I have seen the Bravia and it was hugely impressive but no more so than the Pioneers I have seen.

So basically a plasma will give a worse viewing angle than an LCD?

Any chance someone can link me to some tellys that will suit, big ask but it is starting to clog up my tiny useless brain :(

I recently bought a Samsung 32" HDTV http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/110031

Lovely TV, comprises 2 x scarts (Not sure if both RGB, but don't think so), 1x component, 1 x PC-in, 1 x HDMI, 1x toslink digital audio out (Not quite figured out where the TV gets the digital signal to output. Guess it's from the HDMI)

Comes with builtin freeview and looks crsipy as fuck. Won't do 1080p, but will do 720p and 1080i. 360 looks sweet, just don't drop £20 on a componant cable for the Wii, makes fuck all difference running at 480p ;)

plasmas dont suffer from bad viewing angles,

i dont under stand why are badly wanting a single connection box. you may as well go for diff tv you are looking for and buy a decent amp that handles up scaling and connect it up that way. dont make your choice based on an accessory base it on what pic quality your eye likes the most.

Trem the nice Plasmas cost about the same or more than the W series bravia, which will let you use 1080p and 1920*1080 res if you connect your PC to it.

I wouldn't put a PC anywhere near a plasma screen, I have seen many of them wrecked just by displaying the Windows desktop hour after hour. The main offender being the Start menu and program bar at the bottom which burns into the screen after a few months of regular use. I know these newer plasma screens aren't as prone to screen burn as the old ones but unless you only intend to use the PC to play media on the plasma I really wouldn't risk it. I wouldn't even risk gaming on it to be honest, I once saw a Samsung that had been used for prolonged sessions of Halo 2 gaming and you could quite clearly see the ammo bar had been burnt into the screen. It was quite funny really because you could still see a faint impression of the ammo bar when you watched a DVD on it.

Digitaldirect are good, but once you take into account 2 or 3 years cover the cost adds up. I used them 3 years ago when I bought my last CRT TV, and have no complaints, but if you can get one from John Lewis via a pricematch. John Lewis give 5 years guarentee on all TV's as standard.
