It's not supposed to be anything at all like a true story. The start is tongue in cheek.

It's supposed to be like old school "for the boys" army comics.

I sort of agree, in that there was no real need to use Paddy Mayne, but if they had used "random name" people would have complained anyway. A true story of Paddy Mayne would make a decent, historically accurate series, but if you expected anything less than violent silliness, from the creators of The Peaky Blinders, then you're mad.

My wife is convinced they used my old man for reference for Sgt Jim Arnold. (on the right here)

Actually most of the major beats of the show are true. The main issue is they repeatedly miss out the other troops who fought with them (there was the best part of an entire division with them in Termoii for example). It streamlines the story I suppose, but it turns the SAS into supermen.

The other issue is Paddy Mayne was not the muck savage he's painted as; certainly as violent, but he was posh and a lawyer.

Well, yes, that is the point of the show, the SAS were virtually uncontrollable, which is why they were created in the first place. To do things that no other men would not be insane enough to do. Paddy Mayne's life is fascinating, as you say, Lawyer, international rugby player, cricketer, and unhinged, in his "youth" exactly what was needed in WW2. Hitler turned war on its head, rules of engagement thrown out the window, so in response we created the SAS and did things that today would seem normal, but then, ridiculous. No modern war is fought without special forces doing the unrecognised donkey work, with none of the glory. Which I think the show does actually try and portray, in a comic book style.

So I finished Rogue Heroes last night. The last episode.. remember in the first series when everyone complained about the obvious American "German" tank? I'm now convinced that was an entirely intentional bit of trolling. Why? Because in the last episode of season 2 there's a single scene that manages to troll everybody, and on so many different levels for different reasons, that it has to be intentional. Stephen Knight is probably giggling like a schoolboy over it.

Interesting @DaGaffer. PM me or spoiler it.

I gave up watching and reading about war stuff in my 20's, because it annoys the shit out of me that humans aren't more reasonable (amongst other things). But I'd like to see what the writers/directors were thinking from someone who does know their shit :)

I've watched both seasons back to back really. I quite enjoyed it, first season more than the second (all about Paddy wore thin tbh), but as it wore on, with the fact that it really wasn't historical - I got to thinking "it's just a fucking Marvel version of WWII - why not take some time to do some historically accurate, nastily violent and much more truthful dramatisation." But I think we'll watch S3 tho - liked the actors more than anything...

There's a scene set in the Cafe Royale or the Ritz - I forget which. Mayne has been meeting there with Dudley Clarke when in walk a bunch of his lads in their dress uniforms. The maitre'd tells them they can't come in because they're in uniform. Then...

A bunch of Americans stand up and tell the Maitre'd that they'll kick these ruffians out and inevitable violence ensues and American arse is roundly kicked. That alone is interesting, but the Americans are a. black, and b. say they're US marines!

So,
Troll 1. Americans in general who believe Brits are a bunch of pussies who would always get a kicking from Americans (see Masters of The Air for the most recent example)
Troll 2. War historians who know there were no USMC in Europe; their war was in the Pacific.
Troll 3. "Woke" complainers because these men were black and there were no black marines until 1950.
Troll 4. BBC DEI department for inserting black characters into literally the most unlikely place possible. Probably after demands to know why all the SAS guys are white.
Troll 5. British apologists for racism who are very proud of the fact that black US servicemen were allowed into British pubs when their own white officers demanded they weren't, up to and including fighting over it (Battle of Bamber Bridge etc.) Having the black Americans trying to kick the white Brits out is the ultimate subversion of that.

There's no way this wasn't intentional; and it's actually hilarious.

But yes, the show is the Marvel version of WW2; I'm amazed Hydra haven't shown up. The portrayal of Paddy Mayne is all wrong and a bit dishonest as well; but, there's enough truth dotted through it, and it is genuinely entertaining, that I can't help give it a pass. I'm trying to remember when I've ever seen a portrayal of the British in Sicily/Italy in WW2 (English Patient?), which is special to me because that's where my granddad fought, so for that alone I approve.

Cool. But honestly:
I think it's just 4 - "put some black people in this" - "OK, we'll use black people as marines, OK?", "KK"...

Season 2 of Severance starts on Friday, the season 1 rewatch commences.
I really do hope they've got a plan for how to finish this. I very much enjoyed S1, but I'm losing the will to live with TV generally because things get cancelled with unfulfilling endings.

Silo'll be one. It needs to move to a conclusion a fuckload faster tbh.

One more season of Silo apparently.

That's why TV needs to stop pulling the "takes a whole season to reveal a minor plot point" shit. It's been doing it since things like them opening a hatch at the end of Season 1 of Lost and it's just annoying.

Good. It makes sense given where we are at Season 2:

i.e. she's figured out what's going on with this Silo, she'll go back and say "the world's still fucked, you can't go outside" and then shit'll work itself out, hopefully for the better.

If the world is still fucked, then there's not a lot else that can happen, other than the silos get to a state where they know what's going on, and why it's going on IMO. Then the series needs to end :)

I've not read the books. And that's a good thing. But it's been a bit slow paced for me.
