Right, so here's the chat. I've had the computer I'm sitting on for a long time now - no, a really long time. I believe 7-8 years, as I got it while I was at school (I think!). Let's have a look at the DXDiag shall we?

### System Information ###

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM

Display Card name: RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition
Display Memory: 256.0 MB

Sound Description: SB Audigy 2 Audio [FF40]

####################

So, my thoughts so far have been....

Processor : Intel Nehalem i7 920 S1366 2.66GHz
Motherboard : ASUS P6T Deluxe
Memory : Corsair Memory Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) 1333MHz DDR3 CL9

OS : Windows Vista x64 Home Premium OEM

Storage : 3x Samsung Spinpoint 640GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB

Sound : Onboard supports 5.1, so I'm not sure I need anything.

Graphics : BFG GeForce GTX 260 OC / 896MB GDDR3

Case : Antec BLACK THREE HUNDRED ATX CASE NO PSU
PSU : Corsair Memory 550W VX PSU

Whatcha think? Future Proof enough?

Yes imho, but I wouldn't buy vista now until they confirm the free windows 7 upgrade shit personally. Also is there a reason behind the choice of 3x HDD?

Well, I'd like one to back up my NAS drive - no point in having data only in one place.
A second one for all the normal junk like games and programs, then a third for VMs and such

So I'm gonna start pricing this beast. Other than dabs, Komplett and Overclockers, are there any sites you'd recommend?

EDIT: Hmm, Komplett.co.uk went pop. Oh well

Microdirect can be ok, depends on their deals. I also don't mind Scan

I find their prices to be slightly more than scan/aria, however I've used them alot as I used to live round the corner from their office, makes returning things much easier :)

novatech and ebuyer combo if you're in the UK; generally the overpriced components at one will be cheaper at the other :)

I've dropped 2 of the Hard-Drives, cause I can pick more up later if I need em.

The case, I've decided to go for the 900 rather than the 300.

Upp'd the PSU to 600W. Jobs a guudun, now I've just got to get the balls to press the submit button :O

:O

The Spinpoints in Dabs, 640Gb, are £50. My lord, I remember when it was good to get a Gb per £1 :D

Guys, I'm all sorted. Here's my price list. However, for the sake of my mental state, I'd like to get it under £1000, probably by dropping the graphics card down a bit. This is from dabs. Any suggestions?
  • Intel Nehalem i7 920 S1366 2.66GHz £242.69
  • Gigabyte S1366 Intel X58 EX58-UD5 £225.03
  • Corsair Memory Corsair 6GB 1333MHz £94.97
  • Samsung Spinpoint 640GB 7200RPM £50.09
  • BFG Graphics GeForce GTX 260 896MB £241.50
  • Corsair Memory 650W TX SERIES ATX £92.56
  • Antec Nine Hundred/Ultimate Gamer Case £83.14
  • ARCTIC SILVER AS5 Premium, 3.5g tube £8.41

Deliver (19.227kg) £10.76

total (inc VAT) £1,049.15

No real suggestions I can make other than trying other stores to see if you can shave off some pennies.

Nice to see DDR3 at decent prices, 94 really isnt half bad for 6 gig.

Gone. Got it from Scan.co.uk, with a better graphics card and the V2 of the Antec 900 for the same price as Dabs was after the CPU & Memory sold out (and the price went up).

Wooo, exciting - been waiting a very long time to do this :)

Yeah, I was thinking I might need a new monitor - and I'm pretty sure my CD drive went bust, but hey, never mind :S

Well, it's built :D

Had a few minor mishaps while building the thing, including having to remove thermal paste from all sorts of things and forgetting to plug both power sockets into the motherboard (when did motherboards require two power sockets, and when did graphics cards become larger than my sofa?!?)

However, it's all running and beautiful. I've thrown Ubuntu on it for now until I can afford to grab Vista.

What's the best stats program so I can show how huge my new machine/e-penis is?

e-Peen, don't know. As for Vista, don't bother, wait for Windows 7 or don't buy Vista until you get a free upgrade.
