If you go for a VTEC make sure you get a comprehensive test drive. I like them but the power delivery isn't everyone's cup of tea.

I guess it takes a bunch of convicts to get it right.
I'm not sure if you can buy them over there, but they'd be cheap enough to ship.
Not a colour I'd chose but a whole lot of car for not a whole lot of money.

I'd have thought maybe one of the larger-engined Ford Focuses (Foci?) would be a good bet at that price? Cheap to maintain, probably not terrible to insure. Something like this?

2006 Ford Focus Standard 2522cc Petrol | eBay

Or for something a bit different, this looks like a sexy car!

2006 Saab 9-3 Convertible 2792cc Petrol | eBay

I drive a Saab, but it's the regulation ex-fleet diesel motorway-warrior version.

Trying to think of other cars that get you decent performance but aren't totally mental.

261 BHP 4x4 estate car? Good way to annoy M3 drivers at traffic lights!

SUBARU FORESTER STI 2.5 TURBO [261] | eBay

This is also rather sexy looking, although it is French :(

Renault Megane 2.0T 225 Renault sport Panoramic Roof | eBay

Last on the list, something a bit...different

Chrysler CROSSFIRE 3.2 V6 (AWESOME UNIQUE SPORTY LOOKS) | eBay

No idea if it's any good but I like the look of it :)

The Crossfire is a piece of crap, build quality is crap and they are sloooow and that's the V8 ones.
SAABs are pricks to work on and costly to repair.
Out of the rest of that list apart from the Suby they're all frickin' shoe boxes.
Import the XR8, it's bloody fast, eminently sporty and big enough to seat 5 adults in great comfort. On top of that you'll have a very unique car that will be guaranteed to get you attention.

My Saab has cost me nothing in the last 2 years! I've not had to replace the Turbo yet and I have a mate who runs a Saab-specialist garage, but that's not the point!!!

Also shoe-boxes are *good* because they're common, easy to insure, easy to get parts for and usable for work and shopping trips as well as trying to rip your face off! That was kind of the point of the post!

I'll have to accept your review of the Crossfire since I've never owned one, I just like the way they look. Then again I like the look of those PT Cruisers too, so maybe I'm just odd.

I've have to replace the transaxle on a SAAB many years ago. That experience (no the mention the cost of some of the parts, and I only saw the trade cost!) was enough to make them appear near the bottom of my "to buy" list.
Admittedly they are a nice car, right up until something breaks.

Modern Saabs are just Vauxhalls in drag. No big deal to repair.

Nobody in their right mind is going to import a Falcon XR8 into a country where fuel costs 50% more than Australia. Holden do export the Commodore SSV as the Vauxhall VXR8, but no-one buys the thing, even if the Top Gear boys think its a hoot, especially when you can get a far more sophisticated, efficient and lower tax BMW M3 or Audi RS5 for not much more money and that will keep its value waaaaay better.

The modern 5.4L DOHC V8 in the XR8 is pretty frugal on juice.
We'll probably travel about 20000+km per year. We had a nice Fairmont (like the Falcon but with high end trimmings) which we sold to buy a Mercedes, while I loved the Merc as a drivers car, as a family car it was just a little cramped and efficiency wise it fared no better for our use as the Ford did.
Not long after we got the Merc we discovered we were expecting another baby, and 3 child seats into a C-class sized car just wouldn't work so I've just last week picked up a nice bargain fully optioned Calais.
