All this main/second driver shit is fine as long as you never get caught out.

I thoought the problem with main/second drivers is that the second driver never earns any NCB, so it i s not worth doing.

It used to costt me over 400 to inusr eeemy 1.3 maestro at 21 :(

Oh yeah can someone tell me if i still have my contact lenses in.

Thx

Doesn't work like that, since the stats go on drivers involved, not drivers at fault. And it affects my insurance, so I guess it must in some way.

I heard a story that some guy kept trying to take his contact lenses out but they wouldn't budge. He was able to pull them off part way but then they snapped back against his eye.

After several attempts they caused incredible irritation so he went to an optician who informed him that he didn't have his contact lenses in, and had been attempting to pull his conjunctiva off. :/

And therein lies the problem...

Insurance companies are definitely wise to the whole "Dad policyholder, son named" trick. As a rule they all quote for the youngest driver on the policy anyway, but most assume that as named driver you are not driving the car on a regular basis (usually more than 10% of the time).

A lot of them now actually specify that the car has to be registered in the policyholder's name (ie. Dad). In my experience insurance quotes generally follow a simple pattern (for men anyway):

- Car insured in parent's name only - base price
- As above but with named child - base price x 2
- Car insured in child's name - base price x 4

Dunno if this is true of all cars, but certainly of performance/hot hatches.

Me and Daz have been doing some calcuating actually over the past few days, re: the getting your car in your name and earning ncb vs getting the car in parents' name and not earning ncb. As a example:

A 1997 Mazda RX-7 in my name would cost me about £3300 (23 y/o, no NCB, no convictions, no claims, locked garage, etc etc).

The same car in my dad's name (51 y/o, same address, 5+ NCB, no claims, no convictions) with me as a named driver is £1300

Not that that's particularly cheap - take me off the premium and it drops to £550.

Daz found an almost identical situation with a Skyline R33 in terms of escalation of cost.

What this means is that, if you're young and have a high insurance car, there is basically absolutely no point in "taking the hit", insuring a car in your name and building up your NCB, as it will take about 15 years before you claw back the extra premiums on savings through NCB. And that's assuming you don't make a claim. Certainly, you should only even consider it once you're 25 (the first real drop in premiums) - the ideal situation of course is to get a job with a company car for a few years, as most insurance companies take that in lieu of NCB.

As for insurers not making any money, that is complete arse, year on year premiums are based on them maintaining an inflation-adjusted percentage as profit.

Which is extremely expensive when you consider that your "BMW" (I'm loathed to even call it one) is an old crappy pile of lame shite that poor people buy so that they can say "I own a BMW".

Pauper.

As long as you register the car in your parents name, there will never be a problem. That's what I've always done, and I've had an £8k claim closely investigated when it was made after *I* was driving during an accident.

As long as they can't prove you're the main driver then yes.

well i pay 1600quids for my Xreg 206 - but i've had a bang already. It's fully comp in my name, and came in useful as even tho it was slow speed prang the respraying (pearlescent diablo red) was a hefty amount of the repair. Mainly the new bonnet being faded into the old wings...

enjoy your car mate - just don't crash :D

I'll try not to! :)

Hehe TdC. Maybe one day I'll give you a ride ;)

Oh and I worked out today what to spend Xmas money on. A n00 stereo system. I wouldn't have bothered, but the cassette player is b0rked, although the radio part still works fine. Problem is, the radio is SHIT, and I can't stand it, so I never listen to it.

Can pick up a Sony CD/Radio system that can play CD-Rs, some Kenwood speakers and get it fitted just after Xmas.

Then I need to see about a CD-RW, and I'll have thousands of tunes to listen to. :)
