The Mayans were 'predicting' events thousands of years from now so if 2012 is the start of the end it's a very long end.

I read through a few "slightly" nut job books when I was younger by Graham Hancock, he said that they had 25 thousand year cycles and it just happens that we are coming to the end of a cycle. It's not necessarily an end of the world thing, more a reset.
