I've just started to play this game and i've started a Human mage.

I'm currently lvl 4 just doing the starter quests around Coltswold.

I understand i can have a pet?

If so how do i get one, do i need to be a certain level?

I'm also looking for a guild to be in.

Can any one tell me any thign else about the mage?

I'd also like to get into crafting.

Regards.

Hi and welcome to the game :)

First off, as a mage you can become either a Cabalist or a Sorcerer at level 5, at this level, which either class you choose, you will be able to obtain a pet. Cabalists have instant pets which you can summon but with sorcerer's, you'll need to find one to 'charm'. It's fairly simple when you know how.

Secondly, in order to obtain a crafting skill, just talk to any 'master' for the crafting skill you wish to get into, I.E Tailoring, armour crafting, weapon crafting etc.

As for a guild, i'm sure some people will reply to this thread and make you an offer. Nosferatu Reborn are always all the look out for new or old players. Long as you are mature and have a sense of humor, i'm sure we could invite you :) Just PM any one of us by doing /who nosfer and /send someone.

Cabalists and Sorcerers are both very good classes, both have a good damage output and are relatively easy to level up, quickly. I personally love playing both of them. You are best off just learning as you go along because there is too much to take in and can get confusing when people try explain on these forums.

Good luck though and again, welcome :)

As a start, you need to subclass past lvl 5 and become either a Cabalist or Sorcerer to get a pet.

A Cabalist always has a pet available via a castable spell, a sorcerer has to "charm" his pet from exisiting mobs in the world.

Welcome to DAoC

EDIT: Nerf, about 2 seconds too slow!

The Mage is the base class of your character. At level 5 you will have the option of becoming a Sorceror or a Cabalist. Both of these can have pets but the Cabalist gets his as part of one of his base spell lines, The Sorceror has to specialise in Domination to aquire pets which he/she can then charm. It really depends on which class you think will suit you the most. Both of these classes are well liked in levelling groups and later on in Realm vs Realm groups.
As far as crafting goes, as you're a Mage and will be wearing cloth for the rest of the game I would recommend Tailoring so you can make your own gear.

There is so much more though to this game, probably best to read some of the guides either dotted around on this forum or elsewhere. Personally I used Classes Of Camelot website as it gives a nice description of all Classes and Specialisation lines, information on crafting etc.

Welcome to the game :)

EDIT: also too slow :p

Yes, you can only obtain a pet that is below or at the same level as you.

Colours:

Yellow = the best you can get, they are the same level as you
Blue = between 1 - 4? levels below you
Green = not worth getting
Grey = don't bother charming as they will die too easy

Ive got a high lvl sorc but am no way the expert on what can and cant be charmed.

All I seem to find is Named mobs and Quest mobs CANT be charmed. It also depends on how high your Mind Spec is and the level of the mob (No charming Golestandt!!)

No, you can charm almost any monster (enemy) in the game. There are some you can't though, but just try and find out :) Long as they don't colour above yellow. But as Borgio stated, most named and quest mobs can't be charmed for various reasons.

Once a pet has been charmed at the same level as me, does it get better, or do i have to charm another pet once i increase in levels?

Regards.

No. When you level up you'll have to re-charm another pet.

you also release your pet when you die or when you log out - so you need to charm a new one each time.

first of all, you dont HAVE to charm another pet, you can keep the one you got but its always a good idea to have the highest lvl pet avaliable to you (ie. same lvl as you), and to charm a mob as a sorc you need to spec in MIND magic to get the actual charm spell

some other usefull tips.

Buy a 2nd account which you will run at the same time with the 1st one (this requires a pretty strong PC) and make an acolyte (at level5 make him a cleric). Have the toon in same group you are so that it gets xp too. Put all points in Enhancement. This is called a buff bot! All people have so it's a must!

Also whenever and wherever you see chars named Maramar,rr,rrr or Xekoliara /rude spam him and send me the screenshot. I ll give you 1gold for each rude spam! :D

Pets in DaoC work differently to some other games, as a Sorceror your pet is very temporary and very expendable. If you log out of the game it will wander back to where you found it, if you get into trouble it's always better to just let the pet take the rap and run away :)

Similar with a Cabalist, the cabalist summons their pet but it isn't in anyway stored in a stable or something like that, it would be better to imagine it as something the Cabalist creates out of the earth around him when he casts the spell.

By watching how creatures attack you you will be able to work out what would make a good pet, for xp'ing you'll generally want something that goes into melee combat not something that stands back trying to fire arrows or cast spells on you :)

If you need any help in game give me a shout (or do /who Pendragon and ask for me, I've played a Sorc for about 3.5 years and my partner has played the Cabalist so I have a good idea of levelling spots, and the way the classes work out.

The game changes alot when you reach level 5 and choose your specialisation. But in a good way because you get alot more abilities and things that you can do.

Well i got lvl 5 during my lunch at work...but i spendt about 10-15 mins trying to find the Sorc in camelot, i take it he's in the Guild of Shadows.

Also i went to a Master Tailor and he said...basically i wasn't good enough for the craft...my guess is that i need to be come a Sorc before i can do crafting.

Regards.

It's the Cabalist trainer that is in guild of shadows, as Borgio said Sorc is in the Academy, you probably do have to take a specialist path before crafting as crafts are restricted by class.

I would strongly recommend you don't start crafting right away as at the beginning getting enough moeny to keep your equiment updated can be quite difficult and crafting in this game is a pure money (and time) sink.

If you find you are having trouble getting equipment give me a shout in game and I can help out with that.

Erm no - again it's very unlike crafting in a certain other competing game :p

You have to buy almost all the materials, they don't drop from npcs although as you gain crafting levels it becomes possible to salvage drops for materials but you will not find enough drops while levelling to make very much progress with crafting just using salvaged items.

The cheapest craft is Tailoring and to get to the highest levels (1,000 skill points or higher) will cost you in the region of 4-5 platinum pieces. Crafing in DaoC isn't really designed well enough to tie in with your level so you can't just make yourself a new robe when you out level the old one.

and there is no point having a newly crafted robe if it isnt spellcrafted aswell, so wait with the crafting (also because crafting in daoc is the most borring thing you can ever.....EVER do)

You should find the npcs you kill drop items that are roughly your level.

Two other ways of getting fairly good equipment are via Aurulite (which comes from instanced dungeons and therefore requires Catacombs to be installed) or from Darkness Falls (this is really only useful to you from 25 onwards).

Aurulite is like a seperate currency, it drops inside instances only and can be used to buy items from the merchants inside the Inconnu Crypt. As with NPCs equip also has a colour to indicate it's level in relation to you. Yellow equipment is around your level, orange a little over it, red quite a bit over it and purple very much too high for you. Similarly green or blue indicates the item is below your level and grey indicates it is very much below your level.

As a Sorc you will need to keep (as a minimum) your staff at around your level in order to benefit from 'focus' which exists only on staves and reduces the amount of mana your spells take.

you can earn money crafting up to 650 skill by doing tasks for the craft masters :) (see other thread) just very few people do so these days as a lot of us have stacks of cash from levelling up.

I'm just over half way through lvl 6 now as a scorcer :)

I've almost got my first gold piece, still looking for a guild to join...hmmm, i read some where that /lfguild is to say your looking for a guild, but when i type it in it says i am already in a guild :S

I went to the catacombs last night at the north end of camelot and went through the pipes, i try'd to get to the city in there ?Inconnu Crypt? but died on my way there, so i stayed back and killed blue's for a while, I never found any of this Aurulite you've been talking about.

I also started my Tailoring skill, but no idea how to actually start making some thing...so i'll leave that for now.

Regards.

You will probably be in the starter guild. Go to options and look for the "display names" bit. Highlight "display your own name" or something like that. You will then see a guild name under your name, something along the lines of "clan cotsworld". This is the starter guild. To leave this type /gc quit.

You'll find you have been automatically put into the 'starter guild', all new players are put there. If you do /gc quit you will leave that one and be able to set the lfguild flag.

Aurulite only drops in the instances (in game these are referred to as adventure wings) the entrances to these are found through doors off the main areas but I think you would need to get to level 8-10 before there is one that is about your level.

Talk to anyone in the aqueducts with a yellow circle around their feet, they will ask you to do small tasks like killing two or three npcs and will give you around .5 of a bubble of xp and some gold as a reward. You should find that these and the creatures in the aqueducts can get you up to level 18-20.

To start tailoring you need to put thr tailoring icon from your character sheet onto your QB, then when yuo press it you will see a list of the things you can make (again the colour system is used you shuold aim to craft things that are yellow or orange to you in the list). You will need to buy ingredients from the merchants in Camelot (there are also materials merchants in other towns/cities but probably easiest to stick to camelot for now).
