My First Day of Daoc...

I entered alone. Everything seemed strange and fast. People running across my vision in a matter of seconds. Creatures of all sorts mingling with each other, not bothering to turn on one another.

I stood in bafflement and talked to my Stalker trainer, she was a beautiful lady, with enough skill to behead the toughest of creatures that would dare come across her. She asked If I wanted to take the path of the Stalker, at this point I did not hesitate as I knew this was the road to being the Noble Ranger. After some exploring of the surroundings and getting use to my own two legs I finally brought up the courage to wield my weapon. It was a short Training Dirk but still was sharp enough to impale most vulnerable creatures that bring evil within them.

So it started... slaughtering creatures, duelling with monsters that had physical features that no man would ever desire. But, this was the fighting experience I needed, the experience that would take me to my role as the woodland elf and protect its beauty and allow the forest to guide me through the evil.

Soon I felt stronger, older, wiser... knowing what to attack and what to stay clear of. Of course I had my bad patches in duals and ended on the losing side, but I learnt from my mistakes and soon enough I believed that I was wise enough to take on a quest... I talked to my trainer and her bold words told me to talk to the Tracker just outside Mag Mell... He was small and quick, he could easily be gone from your sight in a matter of a blink. He provided me with a letter, a smelly battered letter. I was now in search of the receiver. I scattered around Two towns in search of him / her, the result was not good. I could not find who I was looking for, so soon enough my hopes were torn apart. I began my long run back to Mag Mell, where buildings looked familiar. Just as I was about to turn and start my journey, a wise Celt began spell casting, and soon enough the spells were diverted to me. I felt an enormous power surge, and a shield of some sort surrounded me… I took advantage of this power and assaulted anything that I could get my little dirk on. The experience and knowledge flooded in.

Once I had finished my battling I walked over to the lake, and saw my reflection. I didn’t see the Elf that I once knew, I saw a ranger. My legs carried me to Tir na Nog where I was to find my destiny. I left Tir na Nog as a new Elf, I carried the bow that was crafted for me only.

Creatures began to die before they reached me; I knew at this point I was ready for the life of my ancestors. The way of the bow.

This was the day the life of the Archer Shepherd was to begin his life.

I love Daoc, Im now lvl 6. I named my elf Shepherd, and not regretting anything as of yet.

There are plenty of great people in this world that are randomly casting great powerful spells upon me and I am very grateful for this generousity.

I wear armour that is lvl 10 and use my 2.7dmg Rappier, I own 8 silver and relised how hard it will be to maintain a nice number of arrows on me at all times, but im sure it will get easy.

If you have any advice for a newb or want to make a new friend who will provide nothing but friendship and loyalty then please just give me a yell in game.

You sound like someone that enjoys Roleplaying, a guild that is dedicated to roleplaying is The Kindred. Our fletchers will provide you with the need for arrows and we have a ranger of the 50th season that can share experiences with you, if you like.

Contact Auscia or Ruddyn in-game if you're interested.

Guilds are formed by a group of friends that want to play together and want an easy way to communicate with each other. There is a special chatgroup, called 'Guild Chat' which is open for all members of a certain guild. Also, each guild has an Emblem which you can paint on your cloak and shield to identify yourself. "The Kindred" is a guild dedicated to RolePlaying in DAoC, and not only that, we're a bunch of people that get along really well and organise a guild-hunt once in a while.

Auscia is the official leader of the guild, you can use the following commands:

Type /who Auscia
in the game to see if she is online or not.

Type /send Auscia [message here]
to send her a private message.

There are certain guilds like Black Dragon and Llaw Arian (You can tell which guild some belongs to by recognising the guild emblem or reading the name of the guild, under the name of the player) that are dedicated to Realm vs Realm. There are many many guilds with different goals you will learn over time. The Kindred yesterday set a new record, 17 people online at the same time! :)

wow havn't been checking the boards for some time now, sorry.

well im lvl 10, got myself 10 gold, some nice armour, bow and weapons, but arrows are still eating my cash. I believe its 8s 10c for 20 arrows! Buying 140 a time.

I've had some great experinces with groups that have been really kind to me and in return I have fought mightly and gracefully - [sorry for the poor spelling and grammer, Ive just finished work and v.tired.]

... and in my point of view, rangers are not as bad as people have made out for groups. My role in groups is that of the puller / chain puller and a great damage inflicter. I seem to help out in the killing process mightly. But, maybe this will turn for the worse later on in levels?!

So upon this problem I have a few questions to build on, and please feel free to express your true opinion on any of the topics, I will be more than happy to read them and take note.

<please do not forget that im still that newb>

Q1 & Q2: I've just trained Celtic Dual, and my response to this is that I do no longer need to raise Pierce. Celtic Dual is the only melee form of attack I use. Why should I use pierce when I have Celtic dual? Whats the advantages of Pierce over Celtic Dual and the disadvantages?

Q3 Q4: Fletching... I got the impression that it was a great skill that will allow me to make good arrows and save alot of cash. HAH! All I'm allowed to craft is the stupid small dmg and range arrows that are completely useless. But never-the-less I made loads to increase my fletching skill, It cost me a fortune to riase my fletching skill to 14 and yet I can not make any other arrows. What am I doing wrong? What is a step by step guide of making the arrows that will compete with the arrows I use at the moment, (X-Heavy Dmg, Meduim Range, Norma accuracy)?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vodkafairy, I am dying to join your guild. From the people I have met and made friends, they seem to ignore my role in Hibernia and I require friends who feel what I feel and I will serve. I shall try again to join your group.

Shep..

Celtic dual is not a weapon skill as such...

It a specc line that allows u to wield a weapon in the offhand slot..

with 1 point in CD (celtic dual) your base chance to strike with your offhand weapon is 45%....

For every lvl you specc in CD you will get another 0.5 to that % (with a max of 65% i think)

You will also get CD styles (that are very poor)

Its not really all that beneficial to specc CD highly but you should be using 2 weapons...

For the time being.... Put all your points into Bow and keep Piercing and path at around 2/3 of your lvl. Dont put any points into CD or stealth yet....

Check out

DAOC.CATACOMBS.COM

and go to the character builder, select elf ranger from the list.... and play around with difference speccs.....

Trust me you should be aiming for something along the lines of

BOW between 36-44
pierce between 30-40
path between 30-40
steath between 30-40
CD between 1-15

Crafting is slow and boring... you will be able to make decent arrows at about 500 skill... which will take you loads of money to get to...

It is if you try to powerskill it all the way.

Best bet is to do consignment tasks for the Fletcher Master (just go up to Arziqua the Master and say or whisper /task). This way not only do you gain in skill but make some cash as well as you make a small profit on the item based on its quality (I did all mine with weaponcrafting in the old days before 94% minimum quality).

With my champ I was self sufficient for weapons till level 25ish, paid for the guild emblem and had no problems with low cash.

Mind you with my ranger alt I am doing fletching tasks and I find it a bit more frustrating than weaponcrafting as the secondary skill gain is not as often and I find I have to powerskill it up a bit.

Mythic says that the base chance to attack with both weapons is 25%, with each level of Celtic Dual adding 0.5% for a maximum of 50% with 50 spec.

http://www.camelotherald.com/more/98.php

Some players after analyzing many, many logs, believe that this is wrong and character level is also taken into account, giving you an additional 0.25% chance per level (12.5% at level 50). I don't know whether or not that is true.

Whats your methods of making money?!

Im struggling to afford semi-decent arrows now, and when IM in groupds I tend to be the only one who loots, and the cash that I get off /tasks are not sufficent for me to buy the amount of arrows I desire.

Is there a way im missing out in which will allow cash to flow in?

Shep.

Thnx guys again.

Thank you Alrindel & Censi. You have been of great help, I now understand CD and intend to use it wisely but shall focus on Pierce as recommended.

Way to make money...get to lvl 50 with a mage or something, then reroll as ranger if you want ;)

I won't dissapoint you...but ranger as first char is dam hard...groups will in most cases not welcome you at all so you have to solo you're way up. And soloing without the best arrows and without a very good bow...it will be hard....dam hard. And they not that great in RvR either after all the nerfs. So I ouwld think twise before makin ranger as first char.

On the other side, never mind me...play the class you find most fun to play, thats most important.

No, you'll be struggling until you get into your 30s, that's just the way it is (unless you get sponsored by a generous realmmate or guild). Rangers need to be more frugal than some other classes at lower levels because arrows are a constant drain on your purse.

A couple of tips: firstly, obviously, pick up all the loot you can, don't let any of it go to waste (some very nice additions in yesterday's patch - you can now stack arrows in 100s rather than 40s, they're a lot lighter, which lets you carry more loot, and loot auto-stacks, which will save a lot of time). Even now at level 50 I can't bear to let a loot bag go unlooted, the habits acquited during months of poverty-stricken exping. If you can, try and find hunting spots that aren't too far from a merchant, so you can run back and sell periodically without losing too much time.

Secondly, when you can, buy arrows in bulk from a fletcher. They will be cheaper than merchant-sold.

Finally, you can save money by using your arrows judiciously. Here's how it works:

Footed arrows have higher accuracy and miss less often. You want to use these whenever you can afford them.

Flight arrows have longer range. If you use these arrows you can shoot a monster from farther away, which gives you extra time before the monster reaches you - maybe enough time to get in an extra shot before you have to switch to your melee weapons.

Clearly the arrows to use are footed flight broadhead arrows (commonly known as FFB), which are long range, high accuracy and heavy damage to boot. Alas, they cost 3s84c each - quite a lot for a young ranger just starting out. But, wait! Once you've shot the first arrow, the monster will start running towards you. By the time you fire the second arrow, the monster will be in range of normal arrows, so using long range FFB arrows after that point is a waste of money when ordinary footed broadhead arrows have exactly the same accuracy and damage, but cost only 1s22c each! So the trick is to pull the mob with the more expensive arrows and immediately switch to the cheaper ones after the first shot. How do you do this? Simply put the long range arrows in your first backpack inventory slot, and the shorter range arrows in the second slot. Line up your shot, and nock your arrow, but before you shoot your arrow and draw the second shot, switch the arrows around so the cheaper ones are on top. It sounds like a lot of work but once you have done it a few times it becomes second nature, and over the course of your leveling up, will save you hundreds of gold pieces. ;)
