Actually a 1st party has made it PC compatible too, you can buy them direct from Apple for windows machines, although you have to get your own firewire card.

Aye, but it looks like they haven't ported iTunes across to the PC - it comes with "MusicMatch" meaning all you'll be able to do is put music on/off the player, but not other filetypes, or editing the contacts list etc.

Maybe, not sure really - first I've seen anything about it. Up until now Apple have flatly refused to make the software for the PC, in the hope that consumers will rush out and buy a Mac instead :)

I have my trusty RIO 500 thats been with me a good few years now. its been crushed in bags, dropped on the floor, attacked by dogs etc. and still works cept that the battery does sometimes come lose and the bar showing the amount of energy left in the battery is a bit innacurate. Can get up to an hours worth of music on it (bit platry compared to you 3 gig people but i dont use it to transport my entire collection) so more than enough for my purposes, working, getting to sleep, relaxing etc.

dunno about that ipod though

Yeah nice I've got the older MS7 but I find it too small, memory wise, and the MG memory costs too much.

I've got one of these.

And very nice it is too, 128MB memory, for about £180, lovely sound, and incredibly small.:D

Heh, I am still using my trusty Rio 300, one of the first on the market, which I bought in the US before it came over here. Now I have a 32MB expansion card on it I can fill it up with a whole album, so it suits me fine.

In general there are three types of MP Players:

1. Solid State RAM, typically 64MB to 256MB, which is easy enough for a whole album at high quality compression, most have USB connections so download is not really an issue. Benefits are no moving parts and small battery.

2. Hard Disk "Jukebox", with 5Gb+ disk space you basically put your entire collection on it.

3. CD Player Hybrids, basically a regular CD Player that can also play MP3s recorded onto a CD-R, you can easy get 500MB on a CD-R so that will hold quite a few albums.

If I had to change I'd stick with a Solid State RAM unit and get one of those shaped like a compact cassette so you can play them in the car radio/cassette, but they are a bit expensive, although there is a version with 256MB !

If your collection is anywhere near as small as 5gb ;) *nudge nudge, wink wink*

I've got the old NW-E3, my girlfriend got it for me from work(she works at Index the littlewoods index catalogue shop) when they were getting rid of old stock.

For some reason its still priced at £245 in currys, even though its rather old i dunno why, maybe because its SONY as it seems nothing special to me and it only has a 64mb non-upgradable memory.

MP3 players...

I have had one of the creative Jukeboxes for 6 months + now and can recommend them. Reliable, sturdy been droped and banged about numourous times and still same as when i bought it. Although they are not that big size - same size as a portable CD player but a lot thinker than normal - still need to be careful if size of the thing is an issue. Does have one fault and thats the stupid built in charger means that you have to be v.careful not to have none chargable batteries in it when you plug it in the mains.

If I was getting one now though would be a difficult descision between the 20 Gb I pod which has its physical size and looks on its size. Although does mean your tied to Firewire while the Creative Jukebox 3 has both Firewire and USB 1.1 connector, but the Jukebox 3 looks odd and is 'chunky'.
