ban summo! he's causing trouble!

joking aside i guess the main problem is that this forum IS the face of freddyshouse, to bring more people into the community we cant be seen as a bunch of bickering old fools who seem more pedantic than friendly... i know we can get quite hostile at times towards people who just pop out of nowhere and try and jump right in but thats because they dont know the "feeling" of the forum, or how it all flows together.

realistically mods should never be needed on the forum, but you will always have people baiting others into a slagging match which drags the forum down and its easier to keep it off the forum than to ensure you dont get screwed up the back passage by some legal person later in life when it comes back to haunt them.

theres a point in there somewhere :(

p.s. better not take that serious summo, or i'll have to hold your hairdryer to ransom

No! NO! I disagree with Insane and Sharma. Let us be who we are! Let the community develop as it will, not in the way a small group of people feel it should.

Some of the funniest threads from BW are those that had nothing to do with the original subject.

i agree on that, but my point is to keep the flame wars and severe offencive clear of the boards, if someones got a problem with someone else it should be kept to e-mails or the PM system (nearly called it to P2P system from our board :eek6: )

im all up for joking and having a laugh, and seeing some really strange stuff up on the boards but if someone goes out of their way to cause offence to people (a-la hotlinking goatie to a masked link or similar) then they should be dealt with appropriately.. or the +1 +1 posts.

i enjoy it when a thread branches off entirely to another strange subject, like discussing jaffa cakes in details on how they are so much better than those cake bars (yum) because it shows a great level of interaction you would be hard to find on other similar boards.

im waffling again... :(

I know it sounds stupid but it, to me at least, sounds like a decent idea.
Create a forum called 'Outside' which has a disclaimer along the lines of 'Foul and abusive language - keep clear'. Also delete all posts after a certain length of time (week?) so people can vent their anger at people and forget about it.

That would only cause more problems for the guys running these boards. A place other than general, where bad behaviour is totally tolerated? Sounds like shit hole.

Its amusing that you decide to spam a thread about moderation Shy.

On topic - I agree with Summo.

Yeah, I agree about the drifting onto new topics sometimes being far more interesting than the original one.

And can you do me a favour, and try to define for me what you think is spam? Short pointless replies, IRC style chatting, purely advertising, or something else?
Both IRC style chating and short pointless replys are spam in my book.

long pointless replys arent spam then?:p

Think both you and Will prolly meant just pointless replys there (allthough most long replies arent spam (as spammer wont go to the trouble of making a long post just to spam), but it does happen ;)).

A very good point that summo made was about reporting posts.

as an example, a mate of mine once said to me that a rascist comment is a rascist comment and just because I was joking didnt make it ok. He said that it pissed him off and that he'd prefer if I didnt do it again.

My point is that if a mod thinks something (spam, insults, piccys) are a little iffy, feel free to take the larger free speech issue of "oh well, let it be".

If someone complains, and people should feel free to do so WITHOUT feeling bad about it themselves then delete it and pm about why it was moderated.

Finally, the person whose post was moderated should act responsibly and not behave like a kid whose lost their dummy. If you didnt intend to insult or cause offence then after moderation there is no offence.

ps: It took me ages to realise that swift was a fucking wind up merchant, but I always was a bit slow! :D

Arrghh my head hurts too much to read the whole thread. So apologies if I miss something galreingly obvious.

I think the moderation is probably spot on as it is. No need to things much more differently, as long as people are having fun and not hurting anyone just leave us to it.

When it boils down - use common sense. We're all human here, it doesn't have to be 100% consistant. If someone oversteps the mark of what is reasonable, mod them, tell them so. If they protest, they get disipline. I don't think there needs to be a science to it.

The point about chatting, I think saying things like that makes it seem rather hostile. A lot of people here are friends now, it's always been a good place like that. The fact that we go on regular nights out through the year (well, I'll come to a Freddybeer if I can) is a wonderful reflection of that. The thing is, sometimes a single smile isn't the end of the world, sometimes it is a far response to the odd comment here and there. It is a part of what goes on. Sure, a whole page of ":D" would be stupid, but then, that's what I mean by common sense.

To Will: Personally I think you do a great job. You're one of the most respected and altogether nice people here. If there's a problem with a piece of moderation, ever, then you're in a luxorious position that this community will discuss it maturely 'cause they like you. If anyone were ever to complain then the community would make suggestions, not flames. Just keep going the way you are, give the recipients a PM as and when and everything will be flowery.

To the other mods, and future mods: Be more like Will.

;)

My view on modding is unless post is:

Wishing people dead of horrible diseases

Explicit pr0n (not because I dont like it but because of the ages of some of those who lurk here and possibly their parents may take a look and may not be as liberal as some of us)

Unnecessary spam. It is quite difficult to moderate irc type chat however as has probably been said before if the person is a repeat offender they should be modded if however it is a one off mad day then let it go.

Inferring racial prejudice.

Reported as being offensive

The forum should be allowed to self-moderate. Especially this one as most have quite a clear understanding of what is and what is not acceptable.

for what it's worth, I agree with Summo. also I'd like to stress that -if a post requires heavy handed moderation that doesn't automagically construe banning out of hand, a reason should be given that is clear (yes, kindergarten style clear) enough to leave no grey areas open to discussion.

so, basically, if a moderator requires to do any moderating, he should do it in moderation?

One thing you should Mod is the use (or should I be saying LACK of use) of the Spoiler tags in the Film & DVD forum!

People are not using them and carry on as normal even though people complain...

Thanks...

I'm not a mod in there. Just General, and its sub-forums.
