I'll probably try to stick to this. I have to say that having the power to alter a thread so much does sometimes make me feel uncomfortable. I'm never sure how people will react to having posts edited or deleted, and so I tend to be overly cautious.
on our local forum the moderators felt somewhat the same about moderating some posts, clearly there would be a backwash from the user in question but if you detail to them in an IM that you deleted it for specific reasons and not to take the message as a warning but as advice you dont get burned so much.

you think you can waffle? :p

if you look at what deebs done on the babe thread (i cant view it because im at work) but when he edited it he added text in italics at the bottom for a simplistic reason of why he done it, then i presume he IM'ed or e-mailed the person to explain fully the reason why it was removed.

normally if theres replys after it, a quick *snip* to the post and things flow fine again.

i'd point you to our local forum, but we havnt had to moderate it in quite some time now.

Just look at the profile of every poster, and, if that poster happens to be DAoC, press ban. Otherwise, continue.

Will, apologies for being direct, but you WERE selected as a Mod and this is part of your role.

However, IF you do feel the need to alter a post / thread then make sure that you indicate in the post/thread that you HAVE edited it and for what reason.

Covers your back and also ensures that there is no case of "WTF happened"

Defnitely something we have taken on board, particularly with closing of threads and we're under no illusions here that explanations are required. I try, where I have time, to not only explain my edit/deletion of stuff but to follow up with a more detailed PM to the person involved too.

Laz : just trying to show my human side.

As you can see from the edits in this thread, I've been putting in a reason, and I think that sums things up pretty well. Since I'm doing this from work mostly, I'll save the long message explaining what happened for cases where I think it is needed. If anyone ever has any questions, they can contact me directly via PM.

Not entirely constructive eh? :twak:

Seriously, I do look at alot of user's profiles, in particular at the user's post history. If I'm considering taking action because someone is coming up with fast one-liners all over the place, a quick review of other posts shows me if they consistently do this or if it is not the norm and they usually post more constructively. The timing matters a bit too, so I always look at when posts occurred and not just what they contain.

Does that waffle make sense?

If any edits are ever made: pm the person who made the post... will be very annoying if one day I come on here and my post is edited, without any explanation as to why.... As long as you're very dignified and considerate about what people have already posted, there shouldn't be any problems.

And little bits of spam here and there in threads are fine. Going off-topic is fine. If we stayed on topic all the time things would get very boring, and reading these forums wouldn't be fun - and the sense of humour would almost certainly go with it. As long as it doesn't return to the old days with every thread getting new posts every 30 seconds then it'll be fine. It won't go to that, because it hasn't been like since the very very early BW days.

i guess part of it is hospitality and another in general awareness, if everybody is aware that the person overstepped the line and how they did it, there would be less chance of others being banned in the future for overstepping the line.

means also less work for yourself for it aids in self-moderation where people are more aware of the lines and the repocussions for overstepping them.

oh and is it me or is share size coke bottles designed for mixing with quart bottles? ;)

It's that kind of DAoC style of post that isn't wanted. Hell, I was taking the piss once again but well done for taking the time out to prove me right!

Yeah, but the difference is that you were causing trouble...well, that's a bit harsh, maybe asking for a mini-flaming. The anti-DAoC thing is no different from the anti-CS thing, in fact, its probably not as bad as that was in its time. I think of it as a running joke, as long as it isn't personal.

P.S Calm down all of you.

Come on Will, you know me and you know my posting style.

It's not my fault most people round here need a contsant reminder I'm like a fucking Cheshire cat when I make most of my posts. As if I didn't make it obvious enough these days: think about early BW days, when no-one eve had a clue? How funny was that seeing everyone fight with me over blatantly stupid things?

Plus, it's all true, and DAoC bashing is fun.

Oh yeah, and all old people are stupid, ignorant and useless. All asian people are terrorists. All black people are criminals. All white people are bigots. All welsh people are actually technically residents of Scunthorpe. Irish people are constantly drunk. French people stink of shit. Belgians eat cock. Want me to have a go at anyone else, cos I will? :D

Yes, it does seem to be a long standing "us vs them" joke, but unfortunately can rub some peoples up the wrong way :p

It's not very nice to read through some of the forums and be branded a certain way just because of a few of the minority. Just think yourselves lucky it's only a few of us coming here and not the whole "NERF DRAGONFANG J00 SUXXORZ" lot :D

For the benefit of those silly enough to misunderstand me even further, I'm not trying to be funny there.

Just pointing something out.

Swift, I would like to point out that the Irish sterotype is that they drink alchohol a lot. So in actual fact they're not drunk all the time just most days past 9:00PM. ;)

Being irish decent I have the appetite of an irishman without the ability to deal with the consequences. :(

Isn't that called flamebaiting, though?

I fail to understand where the whole prejudice against the entire DAoC community comes from.

Every now and again, I come across a post that I have no idea what I should do with. So, I've decided to ask you lot. What sort of moderation would you like in here? Do you want threads kept on topic, do you want pointless spam deleted, do you want things to moderate themselves (more or less), or something else.

Answers on a postcard below.

That's the topic, Shy :)

And in response to the topic - self-moderation is probably the best way to go, with you stepping in only when you feel things are getting to flamey/unpleasant/so far off topic they're on Jupiter.

This is the same edit/close warning as in the other thread.

The difference is that this is my thread, so I'll just get deleting if I have any more fighting.

My views on moderation are simple:

There should be no moderation of bad language or insults. If people want to have a flame war among themselves then let them fight it out. It makes interesting reading for the rest of us and tbh we have no BarrysWorld or GAME reputation to harm anymore.

The only things that should be removed by a moderator are pornographic images (gaping vag and cocks!).

There is a 'report bad post' option that anybody can use if threads are genuinely offending someone. If a post is reported in this way then a mod should view the post and context pretty ruthlessly with a view to removing the offending content with a brief note explaining why.

Members should only be banned if they repeatedly post only to stir up trouble or post porn.

THAT'S IT. Leave everything else alone. We're all adults here.

I was always all for the self moderation thing, but pointless spam from non regulars should be deleted imo.

I agree on self moderation to help out a bit, but also pointless posts should be removed as they mostly side track the entire thread. :)
