I have had migraines for as long as I can remember, anyone who has them knows just how much they fuck you up.

I am on pills from the doctor called Imigran and these work but not always and they take a while to kick in and when they do it turns me into a zombie. The other pills I take for it are Syndol, these also make me fall asleep instantly.

Do any of you sufferers know of any good pills that don't make you sleepy so I can at least take a pill in the day rather than suffering until I go to bed?

Trem,

It sounds like your body has developed a resistance to the Imigran. Its quite possible that if you have had migraines for a length of time and have been using the tablet that this is the case. I would suggest a trip to your doctor as Imigran, otherwise known as sumatriptan, is one of many serotonin agonists available.

Avoid using Syndol, it wont help the reaction of the 'triptan you are taking, if anything it could delay the process. The sleepy side effect is the doxylamine and fairly common.

Try writing down the exact duration of the migraine and when the symptoms appear/dissappear it can really help find the right medication.

Hope that helps.

My mum used to suffer from MIgraines real bad, she couldnt see with them.

She got an injection set from the GP, worked almost instantly, when she used it within 15 mins she was back to normal, a bit groggy for an hour but then back to life after that.

Enquire about them Trem, they're like £25 an injection though.

Likely to be Imigran Subject, which is essentially the same ingredient it sounds Trem has built resistance to.

I really would consider an alternative medication Trem. As I said there are plenty of different 'triptans available.

Thanks luvs.

I can't eat chocolate anymore, or pure orange juice and I have to be careful with cheese.

The only pill that truly worked was DGs but they have been stopped now. I am booked into the doctors for next week so I will complain that the pills don't work. Obviously I have uber migraine atm hence this thread, the left side of my head is throbbing like Teedles cock when he sees a lady-boy.

There was talk of me having a daily pill to stop the migraines happening but I already take 2 daily pills and I really don't want another, along with my hay fever pill and vitamin I take 4 pills each morning (other 2 are one for my brain problems and one for heart burn).

I've suffered from them for 6 years now and i can tell you people who say they have a migraine when they have a headache deserved to be punched and kicked hard

I use Sydnol but knocks me out too. I also take something beginning with a Z (cant remember the name as they are at home) but they make me feel proper drunk and stagger for 20-30 mins then i'm fine

Used to get them when I was a kid, luckily it wore off for whatever reason and I never get them any more. I used to get the most shocking headaches and feel sick as a bastard, it was all I could do to not fall off the floor sometimes.

All of the Tripton based medications work the same way. They simulate large amounts of serotonin, whic for some unknown reason seems to cause blood vessels to widen, relieving migraine symtoms. It is widely accepted that the most effective tripton med is naratriptan (It is the purest form of tripton med), usually in a 2.5mg dose, 5mg in epileptics. Like all similar meds it is most effective if taken within 15 minutes of the initial symptoms of migraine, but it does tend to have a lot of severe side effects in a lot of people (nausea, confusion ect). Unfortunately most of the really effective migraine meds cause drowsiness.

Trem, no idea on the medication side, but since you've recognised several food triggers already, it might be worth your while stripping your diet back to bare basics for a while, and monitoring when you get migraines, and then slowly introducing certain foods back in (steering clear of processed food and all it's associative chemicals, preservatives, and radioactive slurry). You could discover that it's not a certain type of food, but a certain type of additive found in several foods, that is causing your current problem.

Ooh, found a link that might help:

I had to do that, i've cut coffee, whisky and other dark spirits. Had chocolate out for awhile but it wasnt that

Dont think its really coffee either as i still drink tea.
Since cutting down on the whisky my migraines have went from 2 a month to 1 every 6 months/a year

Hmmm interesting, I drink now, I only drink red wine but a bottle a night I reckon. Now the thing is I didn't have a drink until I was 30 (5 years ago) but I had migraines before that, maybe had them from my early 20s so I can't blame alcohol really. Scary that it helped you though, just goes to show.

I do eat badly I know this, hence the vitamin pill every day but I can not eat anything and get a migraine or just eat apples or carrots and get a migraine.

I am a highly anxious/stressful person and one of my pills is meant to help me with that but it doesn't really, maybe I need fatter brain pills.

i got declofenac and beta blockers for my migraines but they are brought on by exertion so im not sure if they would help or not.
isnt it red wine thats full of sulphites? they cause headaches in 'normal' people so they could be a factor.
if you want to try something "herbal" there is a food supplement called 5-htp which has been shown to reduce headaches, but i dont know how it works for migraines. i know for me personally they kill a normal headache within about 15 minutes.

Also another major factor... Looking at a PC screen for too long, or looking at a PC screen when you need glasses and not wearing any

Sounds to me squire that what you need is someone to talk to, no?

PS: I was gonna say you should write a diary or a blog or something to get everything off your chest, but thought that would be a bit petty on my part ;)

I have kinda decided to put my findings on FH rather than in a blog, I will do my blog eventually though. I need babs to spur me on god damn it!

I had a terrible migraine attack about a year ago because I forgot to lower the level of my monitor brightness. I noticed that I kept having bad heads after being on the computer for a while. I had new glasses made up and reduced the monitor brightness which resulted in no more headaches. I wanted to watch a video that needed the monitor brightness back on high and I forgot to lower it. The attack was so bad that I fell over when I left the computer. It was like I was attempting to stand on a violently rocking boat. Really frightened me and the other terrible sickness associated with it has made me very careful about adjusting my monitor. So make sure your eyes are in focus when using the computer (do you wear glasses or need to?) and make sure the monitor brightness is down low.

Aye, my girlfriend says the same, stating that when someone comes into work touching their head and saying "got a bit of a migraine coming on".

My missus and my mother both suffer from cripling bed-ridden, unable to see properly migraines (as others have described on this thread). My mother uses a tripton thingy medicine (again, as others thus far have mentioned) in tablet form, but my girlfriend uses something that's tripton based that dissolves on her tongue that's much faster acting and doesn't make her drowsy afaik?

Meds effect different people in different ways. Drowsiness, confusion, dizzyness and nausea are the most common side effects from tripton meds, but not everyone suffers from them. Of course in some cases tripton meds don't work at all, and if you are unlucky enough to be a cluster migraine sufferer, even tripton based meds can only be used safely once every 24 hrs, so if you have another attack, you have no choice but to cope with it.

As for triggers, again it can be anything from stress to certain foods. A recent report I read linked Gluten as the most common trigger to migraines and apparently the migraine itself can be a common symptom of wheat alergy. Obviously the list of triggers can be endless, but you need to make a migraine diary and note what food/drink you had and what your stress levels were like, then you may pinpoint the trigger.

Indeed, one of the biggest complaints my mother has.

That, and my dad sticking his cock in her ear, you know?

I still have it but not as consistent now. Grabbed 30 minutes sleep while my lad watched Ben 10 and that helped a wee bit. The sickness is starting now and Samm is due back in so I have got to bite my tongue (migraines make me vicious).

Some very interesting stuff in this thread though, going to go through it again when I can see/read properly.

Many thanks one and all.
