No, you're wrong. In fact, its illegal to sell draught beer or cider in pubs in the UK in anything other than Imperial measures. Its one of the only official Imperial measures that will be left after 2009 (along with miles and acres). There were cases of local councils a few years back trying to put up Metre signs and they were forced to remove them. Its the same with beer, you have to get a special dispensation to sell beer in 1/2 or 1 liter glasses and Trading Standards would check your glasses against an Imperial pint, not a 568ml measure.

You've completely missed the point. If they changed the law so that beers could only be served in 586 ml (ie. the specific amount of mls in a pint) but you were still alowed to order 'a pint' would we suddenly be using metric? I don't believe when you order a pint you are 'using' imperial and then you order a shot and are 'using' metric.

I understand that these are served in specific measures but i think the name has gone beyond it. If the EU made us serve pints in ml multiples of 10 and so we all switched to 580 ml glasses we would all still call them pints. Would we still be using (badly) the imperial system or as far as you are concerned is it only the legality behind the name that is important?

pez, the pint is a pint as the ml is a ml.

i cant say it any more clearly.

the imperial system is based on ounces (that queen elizabeth sorted out), and those ounces are based on numbers of grains.

the metric system isnt founded on grains. its founded on lengths, which in turn make a volume and then in turn that volume has a mass.
the kg is actually a mixture of platinum and something held in storage in paris. but origionally it was determined by creating a volume of 1x1x1m (1m^3) and filling that volume with water at 20oc. that volume of water equals a kg. that is the metric system.

x amount of GRAINS makes a fl oz and so many fl oz made a pint.

can you see they are completley different systems?

saying the pint is metric is like saying a car is motorbike just because it has a combustion engine.

one founded on mass and the other on length.
youre completlet right to say the pint has an equivalent metric volume. its like the equivalent to a digestive is a hobnob for example. but a digestive isnt a hobnob, its just a bit like it!

also, think about this. if oyou have a pint glass it would bbe virtually impossible to mark ml markings on it and be anywhere near accurate. so if a pint is metric, why cant you break it down and acuratley measure on ml?

technical stuff

I'm explaining myself really badly if you feel the need to explain the difference between metric and imperial.

If imperial never existed and pint was just a name for the drink i order in a pub my life would be no different.

Just let it go.

It's a subtle difference that is hard to explain. I am glad that you understood what I meant originally but I don't think there is an easy way to explain because most people simply don't use measurements very much.

Up until I was about 15 I firmly believed that, as we were being taught both imperial and metric, Warp speed was metric and Light speed was imperial.
And no, I wasn't entirely aware they were just names for a certain velocity :)

It's a silly argument over what is a very good point & post - it could so easily have gone the other way, Churchill could have forced Metric way back before most of our parents had been born and we'd have thought nothing more of it. The trouble is, we're just so bloody used to it.

The arguing over "a pint" and "568ml" is some of the most worthless dribble I've read in a long time, being blunt. A pint is a measure/volume in itself, 20 fluid ounces. It's not just a random name given to a set amount, rather like warp speed or light speed as I mentioned earlier, in jest ;)
Because should imperial have long died out, we'd have been asking for something else. We might have been asking for a "large" or "small" beer, more likely we'd still have been asking for a pint as that is in fact rather a good all round volume size.
It could have gone either way though - we could be asking for a litre down the local but it doesn't quite have the same ring to it does it ;)

You have to look at other points of view too, certainly no need to be xenophobic about anything in some people's cases. I don't personally believe there's need to change, people worry about other nations not being able to cope with the conversion - they have to do it anyway with currency, its not going to hurt to continue doing so with measures.

So, stop the bickering and bring some valid, sensible points to the thread ;)
In the meantime, someone is quite welcome to purchase me a glimbart of IPA. :drink:

I can understand what you mean but a pint is measured as such, throughout the brewing process, it is stored by the pint and it is served/sold by the pint. Just because it can be measured as metric doesn't make it a metric measure. Though I never actually ask for a pint, Just the name of the drink it probably wouldn't make a lot of difference if it was 500 ml or whatever.

Naturally metric make more sense, its easier to calculate but I think its tradition and what people know. The problem I had with metric was the fact Europeans tried to force it on us, though thankfully they have backed down now, it should be our choice not theirs. Though to change it now would be hugely expensive what with road signs, maps, plumbing, building and other such documentation etc.

i did.
i think i explained quite accuratley why a pint is its own measurement, linking it to law and standards from the national weights and measures lab :)

also pez i now understand what you mean now.
if people still cant accept the pint is the imperial system of measurement then i simply give up!

Actually that equals 1000 kg's, but nevermind. :) I agree tris, that the pint is a unit of measurement just as the meter or lightyear. And as that, fully convertible to other scales, even though it's a hassle and standardisation is a good thing. Go watch Spinal Tap and see what i mean.

On a sidenote, the problem with you brits is you're all bloody foreigners.

1 dm(1/10 of a meter)^3 is equal to 1 litre.

Listen European cockbadgers. We would lose the quarterpounder. It would become some sort of royale with cheese.

I woud have to go to my business associate and ask for a three and a half gram portion rather than an henry.

Again, I would have to ask for 5568ml of Heiniken.

Doing "the ton" would lose an awful lot of it's glory in cheap small cars, unless you have a 2cv or some sort of Audi.

We'd have to buy 30cm records instead of 12 inchers.

I would not have a fucking clue how much I weigh if I couldn't say "Yeah about 11 stone".

HOW IN THE NAME OF AL THAT IS HOLY AND IS NOT INFESTED WITH EC NANNYING AIDS IS THAT BETTER? Seriously folks we do things different over here, can we keep it that way and leave foreigners to their quaint ways?

First of all, i'd appreaciate if you'd phrase it more like "you cockbadgers who is pretty much everyone in the world except us" instead of "european" as most countries use metric (because it's easier).

1. You can just ask for a 113 grammer instead. Sounds cool, tastes good.

2. No idea what that is, but is a henry an imperial wieght measurement?

3. Heineken doesn't even taste good, so why would you want to do that? Or ask for a half litre, it's pretty much the same.

4. Gifv details, i don't even know what that is :)

5. I can't see why this is a problem really...

6. If your scales would show your weight in kg's instead of stone you'd instantly find out! Awsomeness all around!

Really, this is a non-issue if i ever saw one.

Well it's us and the Yanks. You've got the Canadians on your side. Good luck with that. But anyway...

1) You've missed the point.

2) You have completely missed the point.y

3) I like Heineken thanks. Different strokes and all that. Half a llitre makes me sound like an alchy. A pint wil do just fine. Especially as there's more in a pint than half a litre.

4) 100mph. Duh.

5) I look forward to DJ's releasing the 30cm mix!

6) You've missed the point, again! Go Euro! A kg scale will give me a number with kgs after it. If someone asks me how much I weigh and I answer in kg, people won't have a fucking clue what I'm on about.

I think the point is......oh sorry. You missed it.

you go on about it being the fault of europe etc.

but did you know that parliament discussed metrication in the 1700s?
and then the 1800s?
then in the early 1900s?
through the 60s and 70s?
and then again recently?

metrication isnt a new idea and its nothing to do with europe either!

I would. I have no clue when someone says they weigh 11 stone. How much does a stone weigh? Surely its depends how big the stone is...
