I'm considering going back to Uni. Does anyone know if my highers (1994) still count for entry requirements?

At a guess, Will, I would think so. If anything, I think Unis are a bit more lenient on entry requirements for mature students than regular young'uns...

Edinburgh uni got back to me today. I'm too late for this years intake anyway, but my highers don't count if they are over two years old, so I'll have to do an access course. Which makes it more logical to go to Napier anyway (my other choice, they have a formal articulation agreement with the college which does the access course), so I'll wait for their reply.

Brooky, I have a mortgage, but I've just been made redundant, I've been stuck in a dead end job for 10 years, and I'd like to do something more satisfying with my life. And I can (just) afford it since the course comes with a bursary and a guarenteed job at the end of it.

Teaching?

If so good luck mate - it's a rewarding profession if you put the effort in.

I would definitely have respected my teachers more if they came with a pink mohawk :)

Nursing actually. Teaching really doesn't appeal.

And Napier (who funnily enough still have spaces on their course, unlike Edinburgh) suggest I apply anyway, and maybe do an online study course over the summer.

The UCAS deadline has already passed, but nursing is Scotland goes through a different route. I could have applied through UCAS, but I'd only have got accepted if the course wasn't already full.

Some unis take relevant work experince as a pre-req to courses.

I plan on doing the same thing Will, for the past year I have been trying to get myself into a position that I am able to leave my job and go to uni (and hope to start September next year). I hope it works out for you man, I really do, being made redundant could be a blessing in disguise.

Good on you Will, I'd love to ditch IT and do something completely new, if only I had the cash.

Aye, I was quite pissed off when they announced my position was being made redundant, but I'm actually glad now, I'll be gutted if they withdraw the proposal.

Maybe you'll get a fat redundancy cheque soon too. ;) I do have ten years in my current job, so I get a fairly decent payout.

What sort of nursing Will? General? Mental health?

Good on ya though, have you thought about any other healthcare professions? You could help to change radiography from the inside out :)

I would apply for Adult, I'm thinking A&E at the moment, though work placements may change my mind. Radiography was/is also on the list of things I might do, and physio, though I'd struggle to get on a physio course without doing a college course first.

I assume radiography is a seperate subject to study?

Mycenae can give you more info but generally you train in either Adult or Paediatric nursing. Where you eventually end up working is kind of up to you. You might find you like day surgery, recovery, ward work, A&E or whatever.

Regarding Radiography you can be a nurse working in Radiography so you assist with preparing patients for barium meals, enemas etc but what I think you are thinking about is being a radiographer and actually operating the machinery, taking x-rays, MRI's, CT scans etc. You would need to specifically train to be a radiographer to do so.

I can apply for Adult, Child, Mental Health or Disabilities up here, but I think adult is my preferred choice.

Aye, thats what I thought, but I wasn't sure. One of my ex's mothers was a radiographer, and she wasn't trained as a nurse.

Yes it is a whole different course, a degree same as nursing. Vae is right of course we do have registered general nurses working in the X-ray department, though it is quite a bit more technical than the impression he gave.

It is very difficult to get on a Physio course and to be honest the job ain't that great at the end. It is popular because everyone knows about it, and because the football teams have their own physios.

Personally I like radiography cos there is a good deal of interaction with people, but mostly we get to play with lots of very expensive toys :)

Well, I went to an open day at Napier yesterday, and I've been told my qualifications are fine, if I apply and don't mess up the application or interview, I should be fine.

Fingers crossed.
