Well those are the one's that get the (few :p) genuine Man U fans a bad name - they make stupid comments about how much Chelsea have spent when they themselves were outspending every other Prem club before Abramovich. Newcastle and Liverpool have spent heavily but still not at the levels of Man Utd. As for the rest of us we've just had to dream about spending those levels (although now we have Randy who knows...). I've no problem clubs spending money when they can afford it - and as I said it was Ferguson's youth policy originally that earned them the treble. It's the arrogance of many Man Utd fans over the years, particularly since the treble, that's caused the problem. At Villa Park we always get a few opposition fans in our end but on the whole they behave - the only club (apart from the Blues) where they cause problems on a regular basis are Man Utd and it's simply because of their attitude. The arrogance of their fans is astonishing and it's that which has got them the bad name.

Few? You mean the 50,000+ that packed Old Trafford week in week out for the best part of the last century? Please, do some research. You are totally misguided if you think there aren't legions of mancunian reds. As for the 'arrogance' of some of our fans I will admit the band wagon jumpers have helped make us a much hated club, I can understand why people in other cities get pissed off when they see local kids wearing United shirts instead of supporting thier own clubs. That is one fucked up situation for sure, it is part of the cancer that is eating football. If you live in Manchester you don't change alliegences ever, you do and you would get slaughtered but all over the country there are now people wearing Chelsea shirts and those same people were wearing United shirts 4 years ago. They are the scum you need to be hating, not the legitimate United fans who were there through the shit as well as the glory. Don't make the common mistake of assuming all United fans are alike, you don't live in Manchester so I bet you actually rarely meet a 'REAL' United fan, more likely to run into a loud mouthed fair weather fan who are born ***** and will remain so no matter what team they 'follow'.

We've done it for the last few years. ok sorry i should have made it more clear, you are never going to get 2 or 3 good premiership quality players every season. I like Samuel and Agbonlahor, but I am trying to explain that the Man Utd youngsters that came in together were like a freak of nature.

Take Agbonlahor for instance I remember watching him on his debut I believe against Everton last season you could see he was fast but also that he had a very raw talent. When Scholes and Beckham came through they walked into the team and were on par with the regulars.

You stated in an earlier post that of all the money spent by Ferguson only Veron had not worked out. Was just pointing out otherwise. :)

Afraid I'm with Bracken, I'm fed up with Utd fans bleating about Chealsea buying the Premiership just because they can outspend their own team. It seems to me that Utd fans are as deluded as Ferguson when it comes to their precious team. Claiming some kind of victory after a 1-1 home draw against Chelsea was priceless!

I don't really mind who wins this year as long as its not Utd. It certainly won't be my team.

Read it again, I stated that only Veron out of the big signings hadn't work out. Like every other club around we took risks on cheaper players and some of them didn't work out, even Wenger gets it wrong occasionally. As for Fergie, he needs a good fucking slap to be honest, he let that Chelsea game get away from him by not countering the tactical change of the Robben substitution earlier. He should be furious with himself and the players, not slapping them on the back for a job well done. That is my problem with Fergie these days, too content being second best for my liking. :(

Just a thing :) I am from Newcastle, but I was never really into football, I didnt have anyone for example a father figure talking about it and potentially taking me to the matches.

When I started becoming interested in it I remember watching Eric Cantona playing for Leeds the year they took the old first division, I also loved Clayton Blackmore for some strange reason :p I followed Eric the great when he went to Utd and the rest is History. I am proud to be a Man Utd supporter and I take pride in that. I watch Newcastle with a pride that you can only get from seeing your local club play and the atmosphere at St james is up there with any stadium in the Premiership. But my heart is with Man Utd and i dont think that that makes me a glory supporter or a scum bag either :p

I wear footie tops based on how I look in them, I have god knows how many J League strips because they are different, I also have a drawer full of Dublin and Cork Ga tops because they are different and look cool :p

That has happened for one simple reason as well, lack of money for transfers from Doug has forced the club to go back to basics and develop young talent that will come through the ranks and fight for the club. In the long run it will make Villa a top 5 side as well in my opinion, they have half a dozen youngsters who are proud to wear a Villa shirt and this alone is worth a 1-0 lead in many matches. If you look back 90% of those foreign signings made over the last decade you have to admit they let the club down badly, they were mercenaries in England for the wages and weren't fit to wear your clubs colours. Although Doug was a tight miserable old bastard I think his tight fistedness may benefit the club in the long run, lets hope the yank doesn't start throwing money around looking for a Champions League spot and disrupt the balance/morale of the side.

Oh btw, we are coming to nick your manager as soon as Fergie gets put out to pasture! ;) :D :p

To be honest if you stick with the side for the rest of your life I can accept that, what I can't accept is the fairweather fans who wear Brazil shirts during the world cup and are now weaing Chelsea shirts. We all know they exist, you see them up and down the land, swapping from club to club as the glory flows from one club to another. They are scum and I despise them, even if they are wearing a United shirt at the time. Everywhere I go I get abuse because I am a United fan, not because of the person I am or how I treat others but because of the reputation these fucktards have given my club over the last decade. Soul destroying to see your club hijacked by a bunch of soul-less fucktards who's only loyalty is themselves.

The players I named are all good Prem players - Ridgewell has established himself as first choice centreback, Stephen Davis is a regular with N.Ireland, Agbonlahor has played every game this season, Luke Moore would have if he had not been injured and Cahill kept Aaron Hughes (N.Ireland skipper) out of the team on Saturday after his performance at Wigan. And they are in a team that has lost only once this season. Samuel is the worst of them - and I think I know after watching them week in week out. Then again if you went and supported your local team you might get to see who the good Prem players are these days :p

That's part of the reason - but it's also because Sid Cowans and his staff have done a terrific job in the academy. They won the Youth Cup a few years ago beating an Everton team that included Rooney and have gone on from there - though it's true O'Leary had to play them as he had no money for anyone else. We've brought in some foreign players in recent years who have been great servants - Mellberg and Angel in particular, with Bouma and Laursen also giving 100% every game, but you're right in that we've had a few easyriders too (the jury is still out on Baros).

And O'Neill is going nowhere :p

I disagree with them all being good premiership players. And we are getting our wires crossed, Using Rooney or Lennon as the latest example you do not get lots of players like that coming through the yout ranks of any club every year. So yes while Villa have had alot of home grown talent come through the ranks over the last few years, Luke moore and Ridgewell dont really compare in ability when matching them up against the likes of Lennon and Rooney.

You do not need to go to a football match to know how good a player is. I watch a shit load of footie regardless of who plays, so I know what is classed as a decent premiership level player.

It is great what Oneill has done at Villa but I always thought he was a good manager and he is proving it again. What he can do with abit of money though is questionable, because the kind of player that he needs to start bring into the club to get success will be different from anything he has dealt with previously.

You really do live in a fantasy world Marc! Might be going myself if a mate comes through with his cousins ticket, will be in the North Stand but I will make sure everyone knows there is a die-hard toffee in the Streford End looking for trouble! ;) :D :p

Fergie is off at the end of 2008-2009 season, just as Martin's contract expires. Mark my words, we are having him as our next manager so enjoy him while you can. ;)

Seriously though, I do think he is the ideal man for the job. Age, experience and determination are all on his side. I keep hearing about the likes of Capello, Hitzfeld etc coming in but they know fuck all about the English game and would just flood the side with loads of foreign players. That would break my heart, infact I can't imagine a United side without at least one local lad in and the only way I can see that happening is with a British or Irish manager. O'Neill is the best of the rest by an absolute mile in my opinion, England were fucking stupid to take McClaren ahead of him.

What do you base your judgement on of a good prem player? While Moore and Ridgewell may not be international class (at the moment) they are both first choice in their positions in a team that is 5th in the Prem. Rooney and Lennon are international players, but that is not what you said. If you are talking about players who are good PREM players then they fit the bill (as do Agbonlahor and Davis), while Cahill is starting to really look the part.

As for knowing whether a player is good or not, seeing a player play live is very different from watching on t.v. There have been many players down the years either over or under rated because of what was seen on t.v. I remember when Angel first arrived at Villa and struggled. All the "pundits" who saw him on tv said he was a waste of money. Those of us watching him week in week out knew he would come good because of his workrate, movement and first touch - all things which you often don't notice watching on the box. Now he's a key player in O'Neill's side.

Footy threads are great for passing time at work btw :drink:

O'Neill's on a 12 month rolling contract (as he always does) but Randy is due to offer him a long term deal. He's never walked out on a contract and he's always stayed atleast 5 years at every club he's been at (except Norwich but that was a wierd one). The person you're thinking of who's contract will be terminated in 2008/9 (after England fail to qualify for Euro 2008) and who will be the next Man U manager is McLaren :drink:

By all accounts though Oneill is only playing some of the young lads because there is nothing else to play, I am not trying to put down the position Villa are in in the League because it is justified based on there performances.

Footie threads are great :)

Id have Capello over O Neill anyday of the week. Capello has a proven track record and is one of the, if not the best tactician in the game today. Plus the respect he commands means you would be guaranteed to attract one of the best players in the world to your club. Until O Neill can prove himself at a top club hes just another Alan Curbishley/Steve McLaren. (celtic doesnt count as its a 2 team league)

No you misunderstand me, Fergie's deal is up in 2009 and to be honest if he doesn't win some silverware this year the yanks may well move him upstairs anyway. David Gill is a long time admirer of O'Neill and Fergie also thinks very highly of him as well, McClaren doesn't have a hope in hells chance of the United job though and Mark Hughes would be offered the job before him.

Agbonlahor is a class act, 19 years old, had 1-5 matches last year and is an integral part of the team already.
Now, he may not be Rooney, but then again, you don't expect every team in the Prem to make a Rooney a year, it just won't happen ;)
Not directed at you Bracken by the way :p
Moore is great too, two strikers at no more than 21 years playing regularly on the fifth team in the division tells of a great youth development (or some great talents being attracted :p)

Gawd, The Witchwood :D Not been in there for donkeys, happy days though. Used to go to the Big Chap alot when I lived off Town Lane but since I moved to my new flat I am living down on the Audenshaw/Denton border now so my nearest is The Sun Inn or Pack Horse. Must have drunk in every pub around Denton at one time or another though, not that I have a drinking problem mind you! Just I am a very sociable person, thats all! ;) :p :D
