Highly recommend this book i would say it is better than the Black Magician trilogy and even on the par if not better than the farseer series,

Eeek, that must be good!

I'm currently reading "Banned and the Banished" On the last 200ish pages and I really enjoyed it. The books get better the more you read, I'd guess the writer improves himself more than anything (5 books in the series).

Gonna have a look, need something new for when I finish the above.

I was under the impression A darkness at sethanon when the rift is re-opened was the last one of the riftwar saga?
He then goes ontot he "empire" saga with the first one being "The King's Buccaneer"

Yes, fourth book has been out for quite long time (A Feast for Crows, 2005)

HBO is making TV-serie of SoIaF btw - one season per book.

They are very good books and the characters always seem to be brought up/mentioned in the books even as the series moves on in the years.

Just thinking of the characters gives me goose bumps Pug and Tomas, along with many bloody more.

Please tell me someone has read Stan Nichols the Orcs Trilogy...

Just finished Gemmell's Shield of Thunder, His death had not really hit me until I read the last line, knowing that the final book of the trilogy will not be by him :-(

I will say this though, while reading I decided that this is one of his greatest books, some of the characters are amazing.

IMO the first three are as far as you need to read (Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon), after that it gets a bit formulaic and dull although you can hear the dice rolling in the background all the way through the first trilogy too.

There's also a 'director's cut' which is even thicker than the original edition!

Not many that do not get formulaic, but if he stops reading he will miss out on some very good characters and stories, Eric Von Darkmoor, Jimmy the Hand, to name a couple I am shit with spoilers so I do not want to put anymore names in.

yeah i think thats what i ordered, it seems he had to cut out words when it was released, but as it did so well its including the 15,000 words lol.

Might need a Buff Bott to give me strength to carry it.

Magician is still one of my fave books, i think im into my third copy now, no idea what happened to the others but its one book i have to have incase i want to read it again.
The Daughter/Servant/Mistress of the empire are also very good and cover a similar timeline but on the other side of the rift and includes a lot of characters from magician.

I got A Game of Thrones at christmas (book one of the song of fire and ice) and find myself sunk into it, 5 books later im now waiting for the next one to come out later this year.
It is very nicely written but has a far more adult storyline, it also has each of its chapters from the perspective of one of the characters so you find out things from thier point of view.
I found it very impressive that he could cover events from a half dozen characters scattered over the world and still manage to keep things working even thought you dont know half of what is happening. (trying not to say anything that would spoil things here)

I read the first three (Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon) about a year ago and i thought Magician started off very very slow. Silverthorn and Sethanon is alot better IMO. To be fair, the last three or so chapters of Magician is probobly one of the best endings of a book ive read.

Speaking of books, ive finished the "new" Thomas Harris book "Hannibal Rising and it was really damn good! I have always liked Harris books about Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the lambs, etc) and this one was a great prequel to the other books in the series.

Just finished reading this set excellent read even if it is over 2000 pages long (for all 3 books)
Empire Trilogy
The Empire Trilogy (co-authored by Janny Wurts) are set entirely in Kelewan at around the same time as the Riftwar trilogy. One major Riftwar character ('Pug'/'Milamber') appears briefly. The series has a much stronger focus on intrigue and political maneuvering than the former series.

I liked the Daughter of the Empire series for their strong (and not too stereo-typical) leading lady.

But only with the Song of Fire and Ice series did I find myself at one point wandering around the house going 'but you can't kill them they were going to be the heroes'. That is a series that keeps you on your toes

I just re read "legend" (for about the 20th time) still chokes me when druss dies on the wall of dros delnoch.

Finished Banned and Banished this morning, was a good read and I enjoyed it, but it seemed a little too long. You know when a story has too much going on? It was ever so slightly like that.

Suppose thats a problem with 5 book stories.

I don't think Silverthorn is that good a book, but it ends up being enjoyable because of the characters, Jimmy the Hand 4TW! the Serpent War Saga is really good, and his latest Conclave of Shadows books are rather good.

For an author who covers lots of different perspectives, read Stephen Erickson, he doesn't even have a main character, and you still get shocked by every twist.

Has anyone here read anything by Michael Scott Rohan? I've read his first trillogy in Winter of the World, and have tried to find the others, but can't anywhere, apart from Amazon where they are goign for £30 each. =(

I agree completely, both with the Daughter of the Empire and the Song of Fire and Ice.. Just read the Clash of Kings in swedish, but it seems the other 2 books not translated yet -_-
