The engine is great
Agree. When you leave Joe's apartment a bit later on in the game check out that door with the mottled yellow glass in it, the lighting is just great. Suffice to say I walked through it a couple of times before I proceeded. :D

I was a bit concerned when I saw manual lock-picking in one of the trailers but it works really well, and you can always just smash and grab if you don't have time. Just need to hold s until you go past the green bit and then tap e when it falls back into the "zone". I like that you have an option to kick down doors as well!

It won't work :(

Demo worked, full game just crashes to desktop if I try and start a new game or continue from the demo. The internet has no answer for me. Get an appcrash error in mafia2.exe

Find the .exe in explorer, and right click for properties - you should have some options to run in xp compatible or similar, I thnk.

ATI card? Downgrade to catalyst 10.5a hotfix was a noted fix
another option is to disable the steam community overlay for mafia II, has been reported to work for some users as well.

It's all right, fixed now. Needed an ati upgrade :) Was using very old catalysts. Using the 10.2 legacy one's now.

I've heard some original Mafia tunes too (including the one I linked on the first page), I think they were on the Empire Classics radio station. If you heard it in a cutscene, the chances are the radio was on in the room you were in for the cutscene - it's little details like this that make it such a pleasure to play.

Far too short for a game of this scale, there just isn't enough stuff to do besides follow the main story which can easily be completed in less than 10 hours, sad really as I loved where the story was going.

:(

Far too short. Over far too quickly. 11 hours played and the credits roll - there was some faffing in between jobs as well.

I can't seem to get into a "free ride" option after I finish it either? I go into The Story and click on Continue and it drops me in halfway through the last chapter. I finish it, the credits roll and it drops me back at the main menu.

Gutted that it's over so quickly, in all other respects it's the best game I've played in ages.

Looks like they are looking to milk the DLC route then.

Yeah I just read that there is one out tomorrow. Like, a week after the game's release. That's a bit of a slap in the face tbh.

Yep they shipped a half finished game and will milk us for the rest of it over the next 12 months. Fucking DLC era sucks. :(

What a joke, PS3 is getting an exclusive 'The betrayal of Jimmy' DLC. Console exclusive I can understand but why penalise PC owners who were never going to buy any console version?

Look at it this way Cho, hopefully there will be some good user made content. I am certainly not paying for any DLC unless it's on a silly steam offer price.

And there isn't even a built-in free ride mode but fortunately someone has already made a mod to enable it. But previously, once you had finished the game, that was it. You couldn't even get back into the city as far as I could see, it wouldn't save after the final mission so you just kept getting dropped back into the middle of it. Then you beat it and the credits roll and it lands you on the main menu, then you goto continue the story and "oh, hello again middle of the final mission". What the fuck! :\

...or if you kill someone and you have people with you, they'll pretend they killed them. ("bang bang" Joe: "I GOT ONE"... no you didn't joe. you were hiding behind a box in the other room)
From a user review on 2k's forum, made me lol. :)

Have to say that did annoy me somewhat, especially on the hotel level where he lagged miles behind and left me to kill everyone.

The story was pretty interesting, but far too bloody short! Can understand the reviews it's getting now. Plus there's almost nothing to do outside of the story.

Feels a bit unfinished and, as people have said, looks like they are expecting people to buy DLC, which is a liberty!

People are mostly annoyed because there was so much in the previews that just plain isn't in the final game. Looks like they stripped a heap of stuff out just to be able to milk the DLC cash cow.

Let's face it, the game has been in dev longer than DLC has been around. It seems they changed their priorities when they realised they could make an extra buck by dripfeeding the game to the masses. :(

Very disappointing, I'm on chapter 6 now, and I can't say I'm enthralled, so far the missions have been quick and easy, with no real content. Totally unlike the first mafia game. It seems I'm nearly half way through as well.

I certainly won't be lining 2k's pockets by buying any dlc now.

Nah 6 is about 1/3 of the way through, some of the later missions space things out somewhat. Still, far far too short and nothing to do besides the main storyline unlike Saints Row and GTA games. Seems all the good stuff is being put in the DLC to make people have to spend twice the amount to get the full story.

I may wait a while before I buy this, when the price comes down or there is a GOTY version that includes the DLC

Wise, that is what I would do with hindsight. The current retail version is not even close to a complete game.

I would recommend waiting for the full version aswell, it's a good game mostly. Atmosphere is great and the engine is probably one of the best I've ever seen, it manages to look good, run smooth and not have bad combat or driving with minimal loading times.

The main problem really is that once you've done the 10 hours or so maximum singleplayer story, that's it. Collect Playboy magazines or wanted posters, really? I thought we were over stupid timepadding like that but apparently not.

Jimmy's Vendetta was rubbish imo but they have redeemed themselves a bit with Joe's Adventure. Only played a little bit, it'll probably be too short but it's another 8 hours of gameplay apparently and it's story-driven like the main game. And it's just so pretty.

First mission:
Joe walks into the train station, sees the guy he is after about 100 feet away (who is facing the other direction and hasn't noticed Joe) and yells at the top of his voice "WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING???" (or something like that). The guy sees Joe and starts running. Um, Joe, he wasn't going anywhere until you just alerted him to your presence from the other side of the room. Now he's running, and you have to chase him you fat fuck. :\
It's all good fun though, there's an entertaining "sneaky sneaky stealthy killy guards" mission that I just died on.
