Nothing you say is wrong i think it comes down to what you value an item or its story / history. Like i said my box of junk is just that a box of junk but what is good is that junk reminds me of x y or z. So replacing something in that box with a different item would not have the same story to me.

I do not think there is a wrong or right here just personal preference.

True, there isn't as everyone is "this way or that", and my box of junk means something to me too(otherwise it'd be binned). I think the difference is that if i lost item x from there and i could get an item x from the store, i would replace it as the memory doesn't change with the symbol of it, for me that is.

I think it comes down more to people linking a memory to that particular symbol, but only if they KNOW it's that symbol. Because if we took your ring(example) and made an exact replicate of it, i do mean exact, would you notice that it's not the ring? Or would you keep on living in the bliss that you have the ring?

That's what makes me think that replacing items is valid.

You are right it is valid it's just not how i feel.

I would not try to replace the ring if i lost it tbh as it would not be "the" ring just a replica. I do not know if it is wrong or right but i have lost the crap before sometimes on purpose and at times like that i am glad that by ditching that item i lose that memory.

Can you give me an example of something in your box please? Personally nothing of what I keep could be replaced/remade identical.

Of course one wouldn't notice, however, if I were told afterwards it's not the same ring, I'd feel cheated and it would lose it's value (or a part thereof). Material and historical connection means something to people.

Another example would be the whole idea of personal identity, which is based on this. If the girl I love would die in an accident, but someone would offer me a replacement clone with the exact same memories, character traits etc., I wouldn't want that replacement. Obviously, if they were switched over night I would never know, but that doesn't mean that the material/historical continuity/connection does not matter.

At least for most people, it may be different for you.

Aah, that explains it better, think i get it now.

It's more about associating the memories and making them solid, instead of abstract so you can shift them around as you wish, delete or activate.

Or some such, but the point being that those memories aren't abstract, but solified and IF you want to remove the memory, you can just chuck the item.

Kind of a self-mind-fooling if you will :D

True, i wouldn't mind a clone if it acted the same and had same memories.

Calaen, there's too much to list, but i doubt i could find many "exact copies" of my items either. Ofcourse doesn't mean i can't replace them :p

*siiigh* I told you I can't go within 50 meters of a church...the pope will know (bloody popedar) and send his cardinals flinging holy water after me (again) which I sodding hate.

Btw I hope you used an antiseptic wipe on your ring after he had his finger in it Oo
