I really enjoy it, the quests are story driven and generally well written and fun and the community is pretty friendly. The monster play is a good laugh though a bit hectic.

We're playing on Snowborne server (i think thats the name) if you fancy joining us.

It's not that good tbh but that's only first impressions after very little play and only lvl 7. If you liked WoW you'll probably like it more than I do. Think you have to be a LoTR fan to really enjoy LoTRO, otherwise give it a miss I'd say.

You can`t really come to any conclusions after playing to level 7 in a game that goes up to level 50. The graphics are pretty good, the classes are fun to play and the quests are well done, if you like DAoC how can you not like LOTRO? The community is 10 times better than WoW and the monster play is a good laugh aswell not entirely RvR but as close as any game has come to it and much better than the crappy instance play in WoW.

I've tried most major mmorpg`s out there and this is easily my fav thats out currently, if you want a fantasy mmorpg this is possibly the best currently available. WAR will hopefully blow it and WoW out of thw water however ;) This is the first mmorpg since DAoC and WoW that made me feel like i wanted to play more, i actually played for 7 hours saturday which is about 6 hours longer in 1 day than any other mmorpg has held my attention.

I can come to SOME conclusions, and I did qualify by saying it was my first impressions... but you are right, I maybe shouldn't then have gone on to give more detailed analysis.

Well, I guess that's the difference - I haven't managed to stay on LoTRO for more than about an hour, but DAoC has and still does hold me in there for 12 hrs+ on a good day.

Enjoy :)

Its like wow if you like that sort of mmo...except not anywhere near as good. No idea why they even released it, its so obviously not finished. In combat you just don't feel like part of it, worse than WoW for that (nobody can beat DAOC combat both pve and pvp imo)

Similar in a lot of ways to WoW, GFX piss on DAOC from a great height to the point that DAOC can't even see whats pissing on it and just assumes its raining.

Its ok, I am kinda enjoying it but its not DAOC but I wonder more if that was because DAOC was meh first mmo and like sex (unless you were an altar boy) its rose tinted glasses for the first one....

Its worth a look I would say to anyone because its a decent enough game but I would not like to say to any one indiviual that they would love it - its all about teh personal preference and what you want out of it tbh.

Give it a go.

Just started playing this yesterday with a friend on a guest pass and have to say im mixed on my reactions to it at the moment. Think we got to 11 or so and whilst the quests are quite good fun and the look of the world is nice its difficult to get into the flow of combat as someone said, it feels very disjointed as theres a lack of visual cues as to whats going on.

Quests could also do with a bit more structure, especially at low levels where you'd rather be in one small area while you learn the game than be trecking 1/2 way across the map, and having to Google where something is due to lack of specifics.

On the plus side the main quest lines are fun and gives you something to work towards and the amount of people about is a big plus. Also like the deeds system and how you can work towards a lot of goals at once.

Do think Monster play looked extremely cool and well thought out but at the same time needed the most work. Full duration CC's eugh, and no good chokepoints are keeps meant people hiding behind guards etc.

Does feel currently like a bit of a watered down WoW, but that could improve with time for sure. Definately has some great potential. Also if your looking to play with 1 other, or a small group of people i've been playing Eq2 recently, which despite its shortcomings in the past is a bloody great game now, especially lvling with 1-5 other people. Was in a duo and the entire time we lvled constantly missed out on content due to being so much to do. Tis complex meaning harder to get into but lots o fun.

I'm loving it, the involvement with the lotro story is awesome.
The monster play will be good once people get to higher levels on their main characters. And yes, its perfectly possible for a monster character to get as good as a player character, they just level up differently, i'm not going to spoil the surprise.

The free expansion comming at the end of june adds about 400 quests and group encounters and instances from lvl 25-50 + new zones and additions to monster play etc.

I think i'll wait about a year or so, let 'em see if it's going anywhere, fix major bugs, put in more content and the usual lot.

Most MMO's should be started at the "start" only if you want to be the "leet first people to join" :D

Ok.. my very SUBJECTIVE and BIASSED evaluation of the game.

I was following the game since the first screenshots. I love Tolkien... and boy, I was looking forward to this game.

Well.. I played it in beta for a while, then bought the pre-order... and I`m not playing it. In a ways. Twice a week. For an hour.
There are a couple of pretty huge design flaws in the game. First, when you´re starting, you HAVE to play a tutorial mission. Every time. With every char.

Once the tutorial mission is over, you´re entering what appears to be the "real world", and promptly bump into an NPC who´s offering (!) you a quest. And by offering, I mean like. Accept / Decline. If you´re new and don´t want to be bothered with quests right from the start, you´re tempted to click "Decline". In which case you´re snookered, because there is no way out of the first area without following the quest string. Even more important... you won´t get ANY quest in this area if you didn´t accept the first one. Now, I know a thing or two about games. And if you want the player to follow a certain path, then you MUST NOT give him the option of declining it. I know it´s just a small thing, but things like this are really pissing me off.
Then, there´s the right mouse button. You´re using it to interact with the surroundings, to talk to people, to attack enemies, to sell stuff, to buy stuff, to control your character while running and to open the interface like group actions etc.

As for the game... it´s quest based. Completely quest based. Killing monsters will get you nowhere, you need to do quests. And hell, there are a lot of them. All kinds of... kill, gopher, fedex. The problem is, that there is no quest pointer. You have to follow the description to find "Martha Stoutfoot, who is living on the road to the south, just before the junction to Bree". While this is still pretty much ok, there are also quests like: "Get three eggs and 3 pieces of onion".... which leaves you there standing around like a muppet, trying to find another muppet who´s selling this crap. Hello? I´m there to explore a world and to fight nasty monsters! I want action! I want... um.. Lyonesse Gobos! ;)
Unlike DaoC or other MMOs, mobs aren´t there to drop items. At least in the level ranges where I`m playing, the main purpose of mobs is: walking obstacles. They all drop sell-up loot, but useful items can (mostly) only be achieved by solving the quest, or buying them from a merchant.

The next big thing is groups. The game is group oriented. If you want to solo, you´ll have to struggle.

Class variety.... another point. I appreciate the designers efforts to create an atmosphere, that suits to Middle Earth. But they could have made them a TAD more flexible. All goddamn casters in this game are runnign around with the raven bet behind them (later it´s a bear etc.etc.). There´s not much room for individual specs. (Again.. at least that´s true in the level range I`m talking about.. which is 1-20).

Like I said, I don´t claim to be objective or anything. This is just my impression of the game and the reason, why I`m || <- this close to reopening my DAoC accounts.

:(

you cant actually miss out the entire tutorial and first bit. You appear at the town just after the first quest string ends at about lvl3.

Other than that cant really argue with Thorwyn's write up. I like the game a lot, but somethings missing and after pottering about in DAOC again I think one of the things is the ability to just sit on a hill somewhere and chop through a few mobs cause you cant be bothered to do anything else.

I've logged in a couple of times, gone to where ive got a pile of fellowship quests to do and thought ah I cant be arsed with doing quests.

Played a little more this evening and what he says is true. The quests would be better if they were hub based and in set areas but all too often its some here, some there etc and it doesnt feel like it ties together too well.

Finding the main quest line a blast though, just sucks now that i need a few more lvls under my belt to continue it. The game really needs either quest pointers as said or WAY more POI's, landmarks or places marked on the (hard to use) maps.

Also...quests telling you to do stuff at a time of day and no way to tell the time. gg

so basically you have to level your "good" character, then buy an expansion just so you can break even on the evil side... if at all
And no, monsters are not as good as the "good" side, (dont read below if you havent played the monster quests unless you want to know what monster play is like)
What is monster play like?
Firstly the monsters remain at level 50, you cant level them up. You also start with gimped stats, you only increase these stats by doing the monster quests (dont know if you get them from players it was pretty deserted as ther were only a few lvl 50 platers). Quests usually consist of raiding castles, dont get me wrong thats all well and good to begin with but loses its appeal very quickly, by doing these you get destiny points which give you can spend on buffs and improve your stats (think realm skill points).
In addition monster's are always going to be behind until there is a sufficient number of lvl 50 players, quoted from lotro webpage:
Balance will be an ongoing process that we will continue on the monster side of the fence. Remember, monster players will remain behind the players until they achieve higher ranks and then you will begin to see a change.
To be frank in Lotr pvp seems to have been designed to have no pvp and had it strapped on in a similar fashion to wow, you will probably enjoy it for a day or so then put it back on the shelf.

But its early days, we will see what happens
