Event Horizon is horror, not sci-fi.

TBH, I can't think of a single serious sci-fi film in a long time. Moon was good but it was the human drama in that which made it great.

Hard Sci-Fi doesn't make it to the movies. The vast majority of the public wouldn't get it.

District 9 was good. Rise of The Planet Of The Apes was a much more SF take on the concept. Source Code wasn't bad. There are SF movies out there. Not many, but there are a few coming down the pipe at the moment: Nolan is doing one called Interstellar, and I think I read Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End is in production.
