I'm on the market for buying a new monitor, and I've seen a: Acer AL1715ms TFT 17" at a computershop near me.

Now - I've been wanting to buy a new monitor for quite some time, and now this one appears rather cheap, but I've not been able to find reviews about it (in english or scandinavian) - thus I'm asking if anybody knows of reviews of this product, or possible have tried it themselves.

The screen is listed as 12ms response time on the website/shop - which I find odd because of the makename of 1715ms (seeing as it is 17" - i'd think the 15ms in the name indicated 15ms response time). It also lists as a DVI connection, which I'm also wondering about - because then they are usually rather more expensive :D

Anyways - feedback would be nice :)

Cant find any reviews either but I found it for about 200 odd pounds on some websites, looks like a decent enough monitor, specs are good, it is indeed as 12ms response time, the model number is just 1715, they have other 17xx model numbers as well. Flat panel technology seems to be easy enough that everyone and his dog is doing it, so if its a good price, get it and take it back if its turd!

Not quite, there are only a very small number of panel manufacturers, but the likes of Samsung and LG sell their previous generation panels to third parties for manufacture, which is why models from companies such as Hercules and BenQ have very similar output, they're all using the same physical panel and it's only thing such as the cathode, OSD and housing which differ.

How much?

2.500 danish KR - which is about €337 and £237.

It is about 500 d.KR cheaper then any other 17" - 12ms I've seen in Denmark - in a store near me.
I could proberly purchase something else as cheap if I buy over the Internet - but with items as (large as) monitors - I prefere to buy in a shop near me.

No, the one I'm looking at has a makenumber of 1715ms - not just 1715m.
This is the one I'm looking at (sorry - danish site, so most will be gibberish to many :D) http://www.proconsult.dk/katalog/m_disp/s_disp-tft/tft-17/mon-al1715ms.html

It does seem that Acer like to keep their makenumbers pretty similar amongst their monitorseries (for better and worse) I've seen several different monitors labled 1715, which - unfortunally - only adds to my confusion :)

best thing to do is goto the shop ask them to hook one up and run a game or some demo and a movie on it.

Then decide if you like the image or not
And buy the one they demo'ed that way you are sure there are no broken pixels on it :)

I know - but there is a small issue of making it in time from work before they close.
So before hand, I would trying to find out whether or not the monitor was worth using my time on, and taking off early from work some day :)

Would you even use the naff little built-in 1w speakers? If not ask them if they can order the speakerless model in for you and find out what reduction in price it will bring.
