for a bloke who's not played the genre since Civ2 about 50.000 years ago!

What should I go for? I'm inclined to try Civ4, as they seem to always have been the reference, but any other good ones out there? Let me know!

Generals including the Expansion Zero Hour is a genious masterpiece which you just HAVE to try

but Dawn of War is also a very nice game, especially if you like the whole Warhammer 40k universe.

Try Defcon when it's realeased.

More of a stratergy game than an RTS, but I believe there are RTS elements in it. Micro management etc.

But it looks like Wargames!!! ;)

Generals and zero hour are only fun if played multiplayer with humans.

Try warcraft 3, the single player storyline is ace and I've played it multiplayer far more hours than command and conquer as its down to skill instead of who has the most units. :D

Wierdos here like Dawn of War, its nothing compared to warcraft 3 :p

Challenge...the general vs general can also be quite fun :(

and yes Dawn of War is far better then world of warcraft 3, in my opinion atleast

on another note, i also heard that Age of Empires 3 should be very nice if you got a machine that can handle the extra gfx :)

Dawn of War is great, the expansion if pretty good also. Imperial Guard are a nice addition.

C&C (pretty much any of them) are good.

I've got a pretty beefy machine: X2-4400, 2GB, 2x7800GT/sli, so ott gfx certainly isn't a problem. I'm quite taken by the pretty pictures that AOEIII seems to deliver above the others mentioned.

atm:
  • generals 1 vote

if you get Dawn of War, which is very good, get Winter Assault with it, the addon, there is a shit load of mods out there for it, but most require WA

other than than, you can get the Total War "chest" ,which has all the total war stuff in it, which would keep you going for months-
shogun + mongol addon
medievel + vikings addon
rome + barbarian + alexander addons

DOW is a C&C type thing with decent modern features - cover, morale, etc
the total war games are like Civ type thing with an immense 3d fighting engine for the stabby bits.

Total war amazon clicky

and amazon for the DOW/WA one

and a cautionary note.. AoE3 - lots of people had serious ball ache making it work, its been patched but i dunno how well :)

You like AOE3?

AOE2 was excellent, the graphics in 3 may be great but the gameplay in the demo was so awful I couldnt uninstall it quick enough. :(

Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth got pretty good reviews. Played it for about 4 hours before going back to daoc again though.

Dawn of War: Winter Assault
Age of Mythology: The Titans

or

wait for Supreme Commander :)

Seriously, if you liked AoK then AoT will ro><0r your co><0r. Miles better than AoE3 :/

I'll happily play you all night at DOW:WA or AoT.

Rise of Legends is one of the best ive played the moment.

All 3 races are very different and the graphics are pretty awsome too.

Um aren't we forgetting
TA still as good now as then and soon the incredible looking Supreme Commander will be hitting us with its huge large scale battles

Yes its a great game but times move on and people don't want to play a game that hurts their eyes anymore.

I've played TA over and over and over like many people and it isn't that different to any other RTS out there its the same thing.

Build base, build units, keep building more units, more units again and attack.. who ever has the biggest army wins.

TA was great back then but its old and done with for most people.

Supreme Commander looks amazing but its still half a year off yet.

No, no, no. I've already explained why TA is still awesome, so I won't repeat myself too much here, except for this. Saying that "all RTSs are the same" is redundant and dumb, and relies on vague generalisations. You might just as well say that all <insert genre here> are the same, or that all games in general are the same - as at an abstract enough level they are. What makes TA special is the way it plays and feels - it's the only RTS I've ever played that can really feel truly epic. Even Cossacks 2, with its 64000 (64000!) unit cap, doesn't feel so epic because it's so much slower paced, and the individual units are so insignificant.

I just wish I could find people to play it with, and that someone could fix its internet reliability issues.

Dawn of War + WA expansion is easily the best RTS going. Great single player story, great multiplayer with lots of gameplay styles.

Any of the total war games if you have the time and patience.
