no it doesnt show how much he loves me, you see people married everyday who dont love eachother (hence devorces 4 months later) and having a baby together doesnt mean you love eachother deeply either, shows like this dont make anything genuine or make them what theyre not, the girl on the radio was all excited about getting a ring and the first thing she asked was "how much was it?"

the fact that her bf was willing to marry her and make this commitment (which although many dont take it seriously these days, some people still do and marriage means life) didnt seem to touch her at all it was just that she'd have something sparkly to wear that got her going, whereas with me its the fact that someone would actually want to marry me and be willing to spend the rest of their life with me (me! of all people) would be the most special thing and the ring is just a token of the commitment, the commitment, promise whatever you call it is the most valuable thing, for me any hoo.

Unless I missed it, she never claimed it was "just a ring" though. She said it isn't the pricetag (monetary value), but the sentiment (symbolic value) which matters. So as both the £20 and the £2000 ring have the same symbolic value, the £1980 is better spent on something else, as it adds no value. Although for her boyfriend the two are connected, which I can understand to a certain extent.
