Why even get married?

WAste of money and it's not really anything but a name on paper.

Two words... Tax break!

In all honesty I know that many people these days get married purely for the legal stuff should they have children. For some people it's a religious thing, commiting yourself to someone in the eyes of god. For most people it's just a very expensive piece of paper that costs an arm and a leg to tear up if you realise you made a mistake.
