So I had this problem where Windows Live Messenger wouldn't save my login details. Restart the system and poof, details gone. However, after hearing that the Yahoo Toolbar installation caused the problems I went looking through the registry. Turns out that during the installation Yahoo Toolbar messes up a registry value. Fixed the registry value and voila! So if you're having this problem, here's what you do:

Open up Regedit.
Got to HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-bunchofnumbers (not the one with _classes after it)
Go to Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Look for the "AppData" Value, right click, click modify and keeping the % symbols modify it so lit looks like this: %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

Click save, press F5 to refresh the Registry and exit. Then restart your system to see if it worked.

aka HKEY_CURRENT_USER :)

Nice fix - an error in that reg key would likely break a whole bunch of applications if they had been coded 'correctly' (ie: followed the MS recommendations for obtaining app data paths).
