 I've just got SuSE Linux 7.1 after some great reviews!

I'm now looking for some free games for it, not the like of www.lokigames.com

I also have thousands of Windows games on my PC, e.g. Tribes 2, Q3A, CS, CtP2, and was wondering how to play them with the windows emulator [wine].

Also I am looking for a good alternative web browser to Netscape Navigator, as I think it is a big pile of shite :D

Thanks for all help in advanced.

Plus I'd like any tips from Linux users e.g what to get for Linux, good software, GUI's and emulators.

Haha love when people do this, buy Linux and use a windows emulator :)

Yes, but for the games I already have, in future, I will be buying Linux ports, it's just a pity one has to wait so long for them to come out. Also if I asked for a linux game in my local EB they'd be very confused as they only know of Windows and Playstations :D

Thats because the current strangle hold windows has...why develop for a platform when its just not worth the effort for lager companies.

lager companies?

What you mean like Carling or Stella Artois :D

No, but really. There are developers out there, it's just that ordering throught internet is only way to get them and also there is a huge wait invovled while they port the games over.

I mean, they are only just porting over Soldier of Fortune!

No I mean the companies that originally make the game, not the companies that just port the games.

Linux is shit for games?
I play Unreal Tournament, Tribes2, Alpha Centauri, Quake2 & 3 all on 'shit for games' Linux

so thats why IBM and HP and SUN and Adobe and Corel and even Microsoft are busy as bees [along with several hundred, if not thousands of others] porting to, and supporting linux huh?

Mr ?:
my local EB
heh well tells you something about them then :). anyhoo, I play Unreal Tournament, Tribes2, Alpha Centauri, Quake2 & 3 [sometimes hehe as I'm an UT addict :D] and some freebees...all on linux [which I use exclusively].Q2 and UT I bought in something just like an 'EB', the others I bought dedicated linux ports for. needless to say everything works quite well :).

Mr ?:
[wine]
heh good luck with it =P
I have used it tho, about two years ago out of curiosity. it may [or may not] work for you. there are alternatives, but I don't use them.

free games...alternative web browser...good software, GUI's and emulators

I run Quake 3 and Urban Terror on a Linux machine, and they run fine - there's plenty of Linux versions of 'popular' games out there - get a copy of Linux Format - that'll show you how it is coming on as a gaming platform.

ooh you look out Emb...I'm the uber-agressive flame boy remember [not] :D

anyway, I was thinking about that /companies that originally make the game/
thing.
It isn't very hard to write platform-independent code, but it indeed takes time. a model that might work could be a 'snap-in' module to the code that basically says run this mac or win32 or linux style. [just a simple example -there are other probs to it heh]
a major thing would be standardisation, but that would involve [imho] companies cooperating above and beyond the level of a strategic alliance, going [perhaps] for something envisioned by a nice man called Richard Stallman yonks ago. everyone would benefit.
unfortunately, some of the companies I know would rather kill off their young than change the way they work :(

Opera ain't a bad browser, better than Nutscrape. Only tried it on NT at work. Everything seemed to work fine except these forums :/

lol. These forums are pretty important in my browsing, also http://apolyton.net also uses vBullettin and I go there regularly too :D

But I'll give opera a try and see how it fairs up. Is there an IE for Linux?

Opera is a good browser...but again since WIN9x etc already has one in it...IE 5.5...which most people agree is a good browser I don't see the point in getting another browser.

I don't see the point in getting another browser

This reason is that SuSE Linux doesn't come with 'IE 5.5' which is why I need another browser, preferebly an IE browser, but as I am new to Linux, I don't know where to find one.

Win98 is not "Good for games" cos its a buggy unstable OS, the only thing m$ have done thats remotley good for games is Direct X and if you'll remember until that came into existance Win 9x was more like "Why do I have to drop into DOS mode to play my games". End

ahem - Running Win 98 (First Edition) with multi user mode turned on and the IE 6 beta version:

SOLID

Not as solid as it was with IE 5, but still shocking good (I do keep expecting it to crash, having used Win 95 for so long previously)

OK, I was trying to install the 'everybuddy' messaging service in Linux.

I downloaded file into home.

I opened it it was a .tar file the .rpm didn't do anything at all.

It then unpacked, then I went into the directory.

typed './configure'

It then done lots of stuff don't know what

Then I typed:

make

[error message appeared and nothing happened]

then I tried

make install

[again an error message appeared]

Summary

tar zxvf everybuddy-0.2.0.tar.gz
cd everybuddy
./configure
make [ERROR]
make install [ERROR]

Anyone know what to do

firstly, error messages are VERY important so read 'em [even if you have no idea what they mean]. Linux tells you _exactly_ what went wrong, unlike some other operating systems [can you say 'unknown exception? :D]

secondly, make sure you read the README's INSTALL's and whatnot. they are important too :) when in doubt, visit the coders website to see what they have to say [ie. maybe there's a FAQ or something]

also, there are things called dependancies. these are programs or libraries that need to be installed [or upgraded] otherwise your stuff may or may not work. these deps are usually mentioned in the webpages/readme's of the product you want to install.

hint: man pages type man [command][ENTER] and a discription of the command will appear. example: man rpm[ENTER]

graphical apps are usually VERY dependent of the kind of desktop you are using. example: if you installed Gnome, don't expect a KDE app to work flawlessly and vice-versa [missing dependencies -see above]

welcome to the world of real operating systems :D

Linux Mandrake 8 looks sweet, but is bloated and breaks quite a few things. I upgraded from 7.2 to 8 and nearly everything I had installed on my own was useless. The bad part about it is that I no longer have my 7.2 CD's to reinstall it. I'm now reduced to LM 7.0 on my laptop and Red Hat 7.1 on my main desktop at home. My develpoment box at home runs a highly customized LM 6.1 as well as Debian 2.2r2.

Had similar experience Logic :(

Tried the upgrade path, and everyhting was b0rked.
Did a clean install of 8 and it works fine - Konquerer doesn't crash anymore ;)

Linux bloatware - compared to Windoze ? - you're 'aving a larf ;)
