Free market means the rich get richer and the poor get poorer with a few individualos bucking the trend to make it look alright. The very worst by a long way are the new breed of russian billionaires, they got rich raping their countries assets and watching their people literally starve to death in absolute poverty causing corruption to go through the roof. And why? so they can all own a piece of the prermier league as a toy for the weekends.

not really, he is not a genius because put simply he didnt invent anything nor did he come up with innovative idea's.
Anyone with a bit of common knowledge knows he is simply a good businessman and can see potential ideas, the same as the likes of Richard Branson.
Gary Kildall, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvald (google is your friend if you dont know who they are), could be considered genius's but bill gates? no

Edit: I have nothing against the guy, anyone who gives 2/3 of their earnings to charity cant be a bad person to be honest (altho the interest on his salary alone is more than the earnings of a small country prolly helped make the decision easier )

He gives 50% of his income, but that is practically the same as 50% of his surplus. Many people would barely have enough left to live themselves if they gave 50% of their money to charity. I think it'd be fairer to compare how much money one gives to charity when the basic cost to live is deducted from the wage.

Giving 1/2 your earnings to charity > giving what you can afford to give. There is no human morals in this discussion. I don't see why you don't go after anyone who earns more than £17,000 a year (can live on it quite well) or maybe £35,000 if they've got 2 kids.

I didn't say Bill Gates' money helped fewer people, I said it didn't make him morally superior in the way the old lady in that bible passage is morally superior to the rich men.

I've read that passage, and I'm not disagreeing with it, but it doesn't take logic to understand that giving 30Bn is going to help more than giving 30p. Regardless of how you look at it. *Realist*

Also, I'm saying 'human morals shouldn't be part of this' - As long as you're giving something it doesn't matter. Whether it be £30Bn or 30p, all of it is supposedly helping.

Yes: If you can afford to give some (even small amounts) you're still doing it.
No: Same as above.

I've said, I give to chairty in small amounts, but it's not really my morals, it's getting rid of the change (rather give it to somebody that needs it, than throw it on the street) - I don't think I'd give away £30bn though, even if I could afford it.

To Overdriven: I really don't get what you're trying to say. I understand that you give to charity without having a moral motivation for it. What I don't understand is how you can say that charity is not a subject in the domain of ethics, because if so there are a whole lot of philosophers who have wasted their time.
