no i base my conclusion on something quantitative (i.e. record sales)

Record sales do not indicate the quality of any given song, merely the popularity. Your argument is lacking substance just as much as chods'.

how so?
if a song is rubbish then people wont buy it, if it is good then people will

lovely theory, doesn't work with everyone however. people buying a certain record because it is part of their "scene" (for example, emo children buying My Chemical Romance) is all too common. in many cases the record will be purchased because it "fits" with the person buying it, rather than the quality of the produce.

again, that isn't a bad thing. peopel are free to buy whatever they like. but i don't think a song can be judged to be good based on record sales alone. I'm not exactly sure what gives people the right to judge a song as "good" or "bad" actually. I guess a deep understanding of music theory would play a part. as well as a totally unbiased standing point

I don't think it can be judged, except by yourself for yourself. I have a load of friends with a good understadning of music theory, they slate greenday, nickleback, genesis and tso on and tbh it pisses me off that my friends who have never sold a record between them get all high and mighty and slate bands that are actualy bands, selll actual records and entertain REAL people.

At the end of the day Like lilly Allen or not, people buy her music go to her gigs and like what they hear so she is obviously doing something right.

she seems quite good tbh the songs of hers i've listened to are original at least and she doesnt do that annoying pouty "im half starved to death my ribs are poking out through my spine" posing that a lot of female *ahem* artists seem to rely on to get record sales.

Seems like your basing your argument on what you like and deregard everything else.

My daughter would much rather listen to Augua, sclub7 and the cheecky girls than any of My "Real Music" and My boy loves the bob the builder CD. I know they will grow out of it but their opinions and tatses are not invalid even if people like you cannot relate to them. So unfortunatly for you these kinda songs will keep selling because in the eyes of the people who buy (or rather request them) They fucking Roxoros!

hehe. your friends aren't real people? actually that could explain a lot ^^

i don't think a song can be called good just because a person somewhere likes it though. i could write a song that consisted entirely of strumming Dsus4 and singing the word "lettuce" over and over again and there's bound to be SOME nutjob out there that would buy it, but by no means would it be a masterpeice.

Yeah they are real people, real bloody music facsists too but good musicians, they just refuse to listen to anything they regard as "unworthy" It pisses me off cos i like loads of music types and they are pretty narrow but claim to be all knowing......we all know the type.

I look forward to hearing the "lettuce song" btw :p

This topic got good.

If you like Lilly Allen you must be stupid and like all the music i think is shit. If you do not agree with me then your a idiot.

Whats wrong with having a different taste in music i love it when my ipod (cries im a traitor) gose from some old school hip hop to lilly to nickleback then back to abit of nas. it makes the drive to work less mind numbing wondering whats next ;)

And the song at the top of the charts is the most popular song in the UK if you like it or not. Alot of songs make it to the top because of how crap and corney they are like the stupid frog song. But they do not stay near the top for 6 months.

Bringing in stuff like bush to this seems wierd if you dont like her and want her album gone you have the power BUY other albums and singles and her song will drop out of the charts. If it stay in the top though that means its popular

Can't say I like the music, but some of the lyrics are a valid insight into modern British society. A relatively obvious one too, but still.

"Little old lady, walking down the road,
she was struggling with bags from tesco.
Then a kid came along and offered a hand
but before she had time to accept it
hit her over the head doesn't care if she's dead
cos he's got all her jewellery and wallet"

Hated those lyrics. It's pure Tabloid journalistic view of the country, which is meaning that whilst actual crime is going down year after year, fear of crime is going up. The whole song is that sort of journalistic garbage, way away from real life.

the daughter of the sherrif of nottingham is fine by me :)

at first listen i didnt really like her stuff but, like a genital wart, it grew on me.

Some of it is a bit twee, but also at the same time its quite amusing, like the song about her brother alfie

Mugging went down so a kid running off with you Nans bag is down. People getting hit in the head with something and mugged went up in London i think its just a different crime when you get stabbed and mugged to when you just get mugged.

As a separate point. I'm relatively certain that nothing insightful will ever come out of that fluffy pink brain of hers. Does she claim to write her own songs? I don't actually know anything about her other than what I've read about her shitty attitude. And I don't feel any shame about that :p
