Lag problems?....Possible part solution.

Surely using hardware accel would improve FPS, taking load off the CPU?

Still, if it works the other way, who am I to disagree.

Cheers Summo, I hope this driver pack doesn't install a load of wank Creative mixer software.

yay! it worked. A little bit of slow down on a full 32 player map, but nothing as bad as the magicial hovering planes I experienced the other night.

Usless FTP, kicked me off halfway through after half an hour of waiting/getting 30k/sec...

Any alternate download sites?

ive hardware support "on", but its now 31(with new drivers) channel instead of 64(old drivers). and im set at 22khz, full detail. Games smooth up to just over 32 players.

hardware support should be better but its probably shafted, roll on a patch.

Gaeck Goddamned game. So on Barrysworld just now, 24 players. My ping goes between 70 and 100 or so. My framerate is lovely on my new computer. But it's unplayable. I get lag to the effect that people have 1 frame drawn every two thirds of a second. Disabling sound has no effect.

Feel free to feed my impotent rage by telling me it's because of my single line ISDN's lack of bandwidth, though uh it wasn't like this in the demo or whatever. Ugh. I hope and fear it's just because the game is stupidly programmed, and/or non-broadband connections count for so little these days that the sodding designers never tested it.

Or it could be Barrysworld. Though other people don't seem to be having this kinda problem. Yes?

(On a related note, my previous 1000+ ping thing disappeared fairly rapidly. Guess it was just my ISP playing up. It's a fucking shame that the only available broadband here is something like a £100+ a month send-and-receive satellite connection.)

Louster :(

Don't have a problem on my 56k line, I even managed to snipe a moving target last night

I'm fine too on single line isdn, apart from on El Alemain, which is mahoosive, which is probably the problem.

It also shares it's initials with the publishers....

So you're able to, for instance, dogfight? This seems to be the thing that happens most often with me. At the worst times even tanks stutter around all over the place. But almost all of the time I play, planes don't move smoothly at all, ever - they don't even move, they just teleport every 2/3rds of a second. Meaning I'm lucky if I hit them with an AA gun, and impossibly lucky if I hit them with a plane's gun. Is this standard or not. Because if it is then, uh, it shouldn't be. And if it isn't, then what the hell is going wrong?

Pleh.

12v12 just now. I timed the delay between teleports of a plane. It took a whole 4 seconds for it to update its position, even though explosions were being triggered way out in front of it by bombs it had already dropped.

Hohum.

Try setting your connection speed to 56k, I've heard that works for ISDN peeps having trouble.

Unforunately there's no option to set it to 33.6k, so I'm screwed as far as my lag is concerned :)

Come the 12th tho I shall be on cable woohoo.

Yep well as far as I remember it's always been set to 56k, and still is.

Just been experimenting with Anti-aliasing, and I can go to 4x and still have no problems with FPS. However, all the text is well blurry, and completely illegible. Is this normal when switching this on (I'm an FSAA virgin you see)? If so, any solutions.

(Card is Geforce 4 Ti4200, with Detonator 40's, on a P4 2Ghz).

yeah FSAA will make your text look like total wang

Welp it's worth noting that it's the same with the jolt servers and stuff. Maybe worth noting. As worthwhile to note as not to note, I suppose. Buh. HURGH. PROBLEMZ. I don't suppose there's a more suitable forum for complaining like this, hm?

Louster have you tried tweaking your graphics to see if its a client gfx issue more than a network one. We are aware that parts of the coding for bf is total wank but overall should be agreeable I know of a few people on modems that can "manage" with the slow connection but none of them report warping as much as you seem to be suffering on ISDN with.

One other thing to check out that I had a problem with is if you had a joystick/gamepad installed on the system but its not plugged in, for me i was getting intermittent jerks all the time. Plugging the gamepad back in stopped that so perhaps something else we have not found yet maybe causing your problems.

At the very least its worth checking out any ideas, try setting the connection speed to ISDN it may be theres not enough packets being received in high number players on a server and that could be causing the issue ? worth a try

Well setting it to ISDN just gives me a really high ping, like everyone else said. And it seemed to work fine on a LAN with 4 other people and a ton of bots.
I guess I'll give the graphics thing a shot though.

I have had the same rediculous "lag" as well on my ISDN line during big games

Last nite during Guadalcanal I was at the small camp capturing the flag for japan when Summo "drove" up and attacked, didnt get any strange lag from him... managed to killed him and head on my way (and he nearly blooming killed me the swine!)

the unusual part was that i saw summo fine, he didnt jump at all across the screen.. but the guy with me was updating every 3~4 secs on my screen.. wtf?

i've also had those wierd dogfights where the opponent updates every 4~5 secs, but during the same dogfight one of his comrades manages to chase me without the major update glitches.

its lead me to thinking that the people who "lag" all over the place are overloading their computers with the game, so it cannot
send the network packets efficently, thus making them "jerk" across screen for everybody else :eek6:

Problem with that idea is; they don't jerk for everyone, only for a select lucky few it seems.

I do get that effect, only with planes, and only with a few of them.

With some good guesswork, they are still fraggable with the AA fire though.;)

I've seen that happen once or twice on my ADSL, always with planes. They seem to jerk across the sky. Quite rare, though. :/

I get it nearly every large game I play gugh.
Oddly, just now with 30ish people on BW, the game started surprisingly alright, and then by the time the round was over pretty much every single person was jerking.

How much memory do you have in your poota, Lousy?

I finally managed to update the soundcard drivers tonight, dropped the graphics detail and sound detail (sounds shite now) and it's running a lot better - still not perfect, but I think when we had about 25-30 people on before it wasn't too bad.

It's still frustrating though - Athlon XP 2000, Geforce 3 Ti200, 512 Crucial on a KT7A RAID with full 133 HD going, all running through ADSL, you'd expect it to be a bit better.

I blame creative. *sage nod*

theres no way that should slow down much, you should be able have full gfx anyway, i do and its slightly lower spec to yours

Like I say, I blame the SB Audigy that plagues my days.

I can't see what else it would be.

512mb DDR PC2100 or something. Should be enough, yes?
CJC - are you having framerate problems or a similar lag problem? I have an Audigy and a good framerate, though I tend to leave everything at medium settings.

Well I just tried some random new 46 player server, and it was worse. And yet my ping was lower than most other people's. And my framerate was fine.

So I get lag even though there's no lag.

This sucks.

I'm beginning to hate this game.

Everything points to it being a lack of bandwidth. But the fact that I can maintain a relatively low ping and STILL have to endure massive lag is... odd (as above, I had a ping of 90 and people weren't updating for 10 seconds or (and mainly) more. There were a few players that didn't update for nearly an entire round.) And that apparently people with same/worse speed connections can avoid this effect entirely? Can we check up on that, please? Next time anyone on ISDN/56k or whatever plays a 30 person game... keep an eye out for this effect? Perhaps I'm just more sensitive to these things having been on ADSL for a year or two before moving house.

I guess if it effected everyone the same way I'd be a little more optimistic. Sortof. At least then it would mean it wasn't a problem at my end (thus meaning I don't have to investigate it myself and THUS meaning I can just sit back and hassle/wait for people to fix it for me.)
