If just found that, if i turn off my sound, i play lag free. So im off to try some new drivers for my soundcard.

Im glad its a sound bug and not how the game normally plays.

what

sorry but lagg has nowt to with fps. lag is your ping too and from a server, fps is your frame rate which is client side not server.
what you getting is a bottleneck cpu your cpu cant handle its gfx and sfx at same time your ping stays the same but you wont see it that cos your client didnt put the frames up on your screen in time.

dont be silly wildie

lag is latency between your pc and the server you're playing on.
all sorts of things can have an effect on latency, the workload your pc has, the workload of the server, the network traffic on your isp. Packet loss contributes to most of the problems people have playing online games. This can be caused by your cpu having too much workload or the host pc not being able to cope with the traffic coming in.

Definitely seems that sound is playing a large part in peeps' FPS problems. I seem to have a choice at the moment - enable Hardware Sound and suffer an unplayable drop in framerate or disable Hardware Sound and listen to an endless white noise while I play. :(

Tried installing an old ISA Crystal soundcard too, but then its white-noise city all the time.

thats the same symptoms i had summo, sort your drivers or get a new sound card and you should be fine.

Its definatley not a GFX/Net code/bad server thing.

I had loads of problems with stuttering frame rate on a 1.4 T-bird machine with 512 RAM and a GF4 MX and eventually tracked it to Win2K SP3 and my on-board sound card, one of those AC 97 beasties.

For those of you that have moved to SP3, it is well worth taking a look at what drivers you had installed before and after the installation. Reinstalling the latest sound, gfx and VIA's (including IDE) made significant improvements in my case on both machines I have patched.

Funnily enough I get better performance out of my P3 600 with a GF4 MX and a SB Live Value that I do out of a 1.4 AMD with on-board sound - someone didnt code the sound well in this game :(

I went to the downloads section of Soundblaster.com and used the search feature to find European Xp drivers for a soundblaster live value.

They are a couple of months old.

Just went to soundblaster.com and its changed and giving errors. Perhaps they are updating there site.

it seems in retail and the demo that if u use the drivers from sb.com you're usually ok. With the win update drivers (which it'll recommend after install) it goes a bit fubar :/

YES! This could well be the problem! I was using the Windows Update drivers dated June this year, but since installing the SB drivers (dated October last year) things seem fine. Just about to do a proper test...

Hoo-fucking-rah! FPS problem finally sorted! All thanks to the official SB drivers and the following sound settings:

Hardware Acceleration: Off
Channels: 36
Quality: High
Other Hertz thingy: 22 (not 44)

w00t!

Same here \o/ Woot!

Latest SB Live drivers cured the problem, now running at a decent FPS @ 1024*768*32 using :

Hardware Accel : Off
Channels : 48
Sample Rate : 44KHz
Quality : Medium

Gonna try full channels and quality tomorrow, as I cba doing it tonite :)

The key things are deffo the drivers and hardware acceleration. I noticed a definite increase in FPS going down from 44Hz to 22Hz with no loss of sound quality that I could detect on my hi-fi. Sound quality (low/med/high) seems to have no impact on FPS. Higher number of channels (48 and 64) causes a loss in FPS but again, I didn't notice any difference in sound so I have them on 36.
If it helps I have the following system:

Athlon 1.4GHz
GeForce Ti4400
512MB RAM
SoundBlaster 512 PCI
Win XP
1024x768x32 @ 85Hz (with 4x full-screen anti-aliasing :p)

Installed latest SB Live drivers and hey presto everything is alright in the world, even the sniper rifle seems good (3 headshots in a row!).

Those that where playing Omaha this morning around 12:30am, was that the best game or what?

I was there! \o_ That was an intense struggle but with enough progress to make it all worthwhile. :)

This game is so good now I can actually participate in battles. :)

Is it worth me installing some proper drivers for my SB Live instead of these WDM ones Windows 2000 so kindly installed?

Would I be able to use hardware accel with proper ones?

:m00:

Yes, but you really don't want to enable hardware sound as it has a horrible effect on your framerate. Don't use the drivers supplied by Wndows Update either, just the latest ones from the Creative webbeh.
