Keir Starmer is Labour's new leader.

Keir Starmer wins Labour leadership election

Personally I think he is the best candidate so hopefully he can make a difference in the next election.

Personally I thought Nandy would be better but she might of struggled with the left. Keir might be able to bridge significant parts of both to give Boris a run although the next GE will be as much about Boris losing it as Keir winning it.

Doesn't really matter if he wins an election or not though - he's a bit New Labour IMO. And they were fail.

Shame there's nothing different in our politics. Other than the Tories coming out as dyed-in-the-wool socialists when conditions require - coronavirus showing the whole world that neoliberalism and austerity were absolutely choices.

Given the Corbyn clown car we got afterwards, we might all owe Ed Miliband an apology. As for being in the Shadow Cabinet, he's actually got a lot of good ideas and his lack of charisma matters a lot less in there than up front.
And his bacon sandwich prowess.

This is the snippet that was doing the rounds for several hours, with many a discussion about the Israeli bit.
RLB then uncritically shared the whole article.

Discussion in our household whether
  1. She just shared it after reading the headline about the destruction of capitalism
  2. She read the whole article and agreed with the conspiracy theory
  3. She read the whole article and didn't notice the Israeli bit
Any of those three are pretty damning to me.

He's got rid of her decisively but I the whole anti-semitism thing is probably an excuse to get rid of the leading left-wing opposition.

I'm conflicted about this:
1. Maxine Peake is talking bollocks. The neck thing comes from US police advisors; they don't need the Israeli Army to teach them and even if they did, why is it relevant?
2. Long-Bailey liking the tweet is fucking stupid and anyone in the public eye who likes stupid things on Twitter deserves all they get.
3. Being anti-Israel or anti-Israeli government isn't anti-Semitic, its being anti-Israel. But we've got to the point where the Israeli government have successfully turned the terms into synonyms, and anyone who argues against that is...anti-Semitic.

So Starmer was right to get rid of her, she was stupid, but the reason she was stupid is wrong. Ow.

I agree that not all Israeli criticism is antisemitism, but someone in her position should not be flirting with this stuff for many obvious reasons.

Absolutely the destruction of capitalism is a legitimate intellectual aim.

She wasn't antisemitic in her post - criticism of israel is never antisemitic unless it's based on hatred of jews.

She was a bit dumb / naive - she had the apparently had the opportunity to retract but said "why?". Probably was counting on Starmer backing down.

As it is - Starmer got the excuse he wanted to get shot of the lefties biggest remaining leader. Israel's laughing as the status quo has been reestablished when it was previously under threat (which is really what the whole antisemitism bullshit was about).

Its a legitimate political aim, but not a selling point in a major economic power.

Those aspirations are dead for now.
Tory lite is the only path.

Legitimate intellectual aim for fringe radicals on internet forums sure. Electoral poison though as proven in the last election, the last thing Starmer wants to be associated with. So you can take your pick of the reasons it was dumb of RLB to share the article in the way she did.

It was in the fucking independent. Hardly quoting a fringe journal. And the dismantling of capitalism in it's current form is not only a not-uncommonly held aspiration but a necessity if the human race is going to survive IMO.

Aside from that, this was a spineless hatchet job from Starmer. And totally panders to the Israel lobby. Starmer knows he's no hope if that lobby kicks up a fuss - so we're back to being Israel's cuck.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I never liked her. But it's not about "being smarter" - it's about finding an excuse to get rid.

If you're already on that train it doesn't matter how smart you are. It's going to happen some time.

Once you have the money to afford that sort of luxury you just want something that marks you out as having that much money.

tbh most of the way the really rich live is totally at odds with need and more give me something the plebs cannot afford. However awful it is. Put a brand name on it and woosh.
