I read in the bath and regularly fall asleep, dropping the books.

I'll get one when the waterproof version comes out.

Played with one. Hated it. Horrible things. Plus I'm the old fashioned type. I like my shelves to be full of books. The kindle will not make people read more books. Its just a poncy show-offy thing for commuters & holiday makers who cba to carry a book. Proper books 4tw. I love the tactility & feel & smell of books. Kindle my arse

Anyway, I can already download & read books on my Pocket PC, and its smaller and does 2000 things more than the Kindle can plus its a phone.

In the 10 years before getting my Kindle, I read 3 books. I've already read another 4 books since getting it. :p

Yeah, if someone gets a device to read books, they will read more books.

I wouldn't get one as the cost would be the cost of a lot of books, not to mention libraries have a ton of free books.

Seems like a waste of money, but if you have it to waste, go for it.

£100 sounds like a lot of money to be able to spend more money on books.

Really does sound like a nerdy rip-off.

People seem to be forgetting just how much free material there is out there for the Kindle.

Well at £109 it's perfect impulse gadget buy price.

Yeah it's not -too- shabby, if i had a ciouple of thousand extra i could consider it too. Would force me to read more books as i'd spent the cash.

Just that it's still an unnecessary evil by many counts, so it's not like a mobile phone. Then again, these days people don't use their phones for things like phoning anymore :p

People comparing the Kindle with Phones and Tablets should try one. The E Ink screen are so much easier on the eye than a glossy phone screen / tablet screen. I have tried the Kindle reader on the iPad and found it hurt my eyes after a few hours. Plus the Wireless Kindle will go 1 month between charges and that's not one month of 2 hours a day its a month as the screen is always on. I personally have read more books since getting mine as it is so easy to pick from the Amazon recommend's for the Authors i like and within 20 seconds i have the new book.

As for the battery - 4.5 hour charge gets you 4 weeks. I'd say that's not much of an issue.

Heh - try leaving it in your car overnight in the winter - those batteries cant stand the cold - another win for the book :p

Come on, you're really reaching there. 4.5 hours for 4 weeks is about as good as it needs to be.

Depends on your commute I guess - I generally leave my work bag in the car and only take books out when I finish em so its a realistic scenario for me.

Another thing no-ones mentioned is how shock resistant and abrasion resistant are they?

No idea, not really keen to find out. Though it's a very solid and well built feeling device.

It's not a book though, so clearly dunking it in water, or chucking it on to concrete isn't the best idea. It's still fanruddytastic though. Oh, there's a leather case for it though that looks like it'd add a great deal of protection for it.

For me, a Kindle would pay for itself in a few months; Books are ridiculously expensive over here (they're VATable and Irish prices are a ripoff anyway), and ordering from Amazon is slow (unless you pay a fortune for shipping). The immediacy is also really appealing.

The Adam looks marvellous, but I'm still not convinced it will ever see the light of day.

Yeah after much reading I am thinking the same, decided not to cancel my Kindle as I don't see ADAM ever releasing at the price they originally said. It is a £300 peice of hardware, no way will they be selling it at £220.

I've currently got over 150 books on my Kindle (some important work related books / texts too) and I take it everywhere with me. I find it very convenient, the books are cheaper 40 - 60% cheaper and it is comfortable to read, that battery lasts an age too. I can't fault it. If there is a book I am particularly looking forward to and want on my shelf, I will still buy the hardback. /shrug

I do like the idea, but to me books are something to be cherished and passed on. I would love for them to start bundling e-books with paper versions. The written word is an ancient standard and who knows what will become of your e-books in even 5 years time.

Readers are still cool, i'd love one for general use.

I back my ebooks up and they are available from amazon on any device I choose as long as it has a kindle app. So I have no real worries on that score. I can even set the kindle to remember where I was up to and when the apps sync, they will remember too.

E-books are great for simple fiction or widely published books. My problem is with limited edition or small scale publishment. Some information is still with us after centuries because it was written down at the time.
I've held books almost 300 years old in my hands and been able to read the words clearly.
There are copies of the Bible in vaults at the Vatican that are over 1500 years old and still legible.

Electrifying the reading process works great for day to day reading, but long-term archiving still needs a process that doesn't use electricity. I'm buying achival quality pens to write on acid-free paper to store my family tree details. With proper care, my manuscripts should last more than 150 years without significant degradation. I question if my electronic media will last as long, or even if they will be readable by the machines at that time.

For the last few months, whenever I've been buying a book on amazon I've had a check to see if it was available in a Kindle version - and roughly half the time it isnt. That's been the main factor in me not buying one yet.

Would be nice if they did some more promotions though, like giving a discount on the ebook version if you already bought the regular book through amazon. It'd be good to see more bundles as well, Trilogies sold as a bundle for less than buying all 3 seperatly etc

This is what would get me to buy an eBook reader. I would only be using it for fiction, for all my reference books I still prefer being able to quickly flick through them and find the section I want.

Speaking of this, back to my essay. :/

The Kindle has a regular search text option to find a string, so finding things is *very* quick indeed.

So i've just bought a Kindle due to an incoming period of hospital time, I have a fair few books already in .lit format and pdf.

Can any of you fine folk point me to a tested converter for getting these to work on my kindle?

Thanks!
