Kidney Stones.

Yesterday I was at work when I felt a pain in my lower back. The pain grew and within 15 minutes I knew it was a kidney stone, as I'd had one (on the other side) about 7 or 8 years ago.

I told work I was going home, got to my car to drive the 10 miles home. Managed about 2 miles then had to stop at the side of the road to be sick. Eventually I got home (luckily I was in the car, I dont think I could have done it on the bike, and luckily the car is an auto) rang the doctors who just said get to the hospital.

By the time I got to the hospital I had just abandoned the car out side the fron and staggered in, where the amazingly sympathetic nurses put my in a bed and filled me up with painkillers.

Eventually I was moved to the main hospital at Redhill, and, after passing a load of blood filled urine, was allowed home at 10pm last night. This morning I woke up, and the pain started again, I was really scared, you simply cannot describe what it's like. Luckily I felt something in my kidney move, thats the only way I can describe it, and the pain immediately stopped. I'm just sitting here hoping it will stay that way. I'm booked in for a CT scan, dunno what else will happen.

Happy days :(

Thanks chums.

It's all the more annoying as I have an interview with Triumph tomorrow and need to be on my best. I dont want to cancel it unless I have to, so I'm hanging in there to see how I feel this evening. I suspect it's going to be a disaster :(

Point of the thread actually was to let people know, drink water! Drink 2 litres a day. At least. Thats 3 and a half pints. Apparently not drinking enough water is a common cause of this.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that Throd. NB. Most people are surprised about how much water they do drink. Four mugs of tea is a litre all on its own.

get out of there, stones, you don't belong in a kidney - you can't even excrete waste!

Blood in the urine always makes me wince. Hope they sort it soon :(

I think thats a bit of an urban myth actually :(

Fizzy stuff is not required, its water water and more water. The doctor last night was saying this, its about rehydration, and water is the best thing. Apparantly anything fizzy can be a negative.

ouch, known a mate who had this and he was always telling me how much it hurt. Cheers for the heads up about the water thing, tbh i never really knew what the cause of this was until now ofc :) Only problem is trying to actually drink what doctors tell you should drink, you go to the toilet like every blood minute. Well i do anyway.

G'luck etc boyo.

Apparently milk is better than water, which sounds odd as kidney stones are mainly made of calcium, but there's some medical reason why low calcium diets make kidney stones more likely. They also say that you're supposed to drink enough liquid to make 2 litres of urine a day! :eek6:

When I worked at GAME our IT director had a really bad case, had to have an op and before he went you'd literally hear his screams all over the office when he was in the jakes. Hope you get it fixed soon!

Nah - that's rubbish.

"Drink at least eight glasses of water a day." Really? Is there scientific evidence for "8 x 8"? -- Valtin 283 (5): R993 -- AJP - Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology

I'd blame it on Treyarch :)

The last time I had this, about 6 or 7 years ago, I passed the kidney stone about 6 months later, but it didnt hurt. I was so pleased I fished it out of the toilet and showed it to my workmates.

They were well impressed ....

The pain stuff for me is in my kidney, which is blocked, and there's like a big backlog up to it, like a blocked drain, that gives this horrible throbbing pain. I cant describe it, and hopefully I'll soon have forgotton it again, but you know its bad when female nurses are sympthetic, and make comments about it being the same equivilent pain as childbirth :(

I guess if the stone is too large they would have to break it down with the laser...and then you can piss it out...hopefully without any pain!

Unlucky - hope you pass that stone soon. Did you ever get the first stone analysed since they can be composed of a number of different chemicals?

You are at a greater risk of developing recurrent (returning) kidney stones if:
-you eat a high-protein, low-fibre diet
-you are inactive or bed-bound
-kidney stones run in your family
-you have had several kidney or urinary infections
-you have had a kidney stone previously, particularly if this was before you were 25 years of age
-only one of your kidneys works
-you have had an intestinal bypass (surgery on your digestive system), or a disease of the small intestine, such as Crohn's disease (inflammation of the gut)

There is also evidence that certain types of medication may also increase your risk of developing recurrent kidney stones. For example:
-aspirin
-antacids
-calcium and vitamin D supplements

Depending on the size of it they can also break it up with ultrasound treatment. Hope they get you sorted soon, not pleasant at all!

Probably a bit too much information, but a couple of years back I had a urinary tract infection.

Have you ever seen the Green Mile?

You know the scene where the guy is doubled over in the toilet, crying in pain?

That is *literally* what it's like - it's as if you are pissing a load of razor blades out your cock and the more you hold it in, the more it hurts.

Eventually it gets to the point where deep down, you know you are going to have to man up and push past the pain so that you can empty your bladder and get it over with. When you finally do it, it's probably a solid minute of the most excruciating pain that you could ever experience.

You have my complete sympathy.
