Well, who knows. Might have been out of his mind and now better.

If we don't release people after they're found mentally stable, better or rehabilitated by similar peers that find them unstable, why do we bother with jails?

Just to give an alternative perspectie to the initial "hang the f*ck" opinion.

He can because his 30 years are up, the recommended amount given by the original trial judge.

Doesn't mean they will actually let him out. Even if that was contemplated it would be years away from happening.

We bother with jails in order to isolate individuals who are a threat to society's wellbeing. He killed 13 people, he should stay behind bars for life.

It wasnt a recommended amount... it was to be the minimum, there was no maximum ever stated.

Personally I run along this line of thought.

He got 20 life sentences for 20 seperate offenses.
So lets say he has to serve 7 years for each of these offenses, Im nice and giving it a reduced amount because of there stupid mental state arguement.

These are to be served one after the other, not at the same time, and as such he needs to serve 140yrs in prison with no chance of parole.
He is the sort of person that should be strung up, and if he gets released and is found dead i will not feel any sympathy for him.

He refused treatment for his illness.

Thus he showed no desire to rehabilitate.

Thus he should stay in prison for the rest of his life.

Might as well drop 'em in a nuclear waste hole then. Afterall, we just want to get rid of them right?

And if it's one kill, it's 11 kills, accident or not. Let's just get every criminal, tiny or not, out of our misery 'cause rehabilitation isn't possible.

Right?

Back in '93, lot can change in 15 years. That's near as long as you've lived, think about it that way.

I'm guessing there's not many believers in rehabilitation here?

If you can go 12 years inside jail due to murdering people and deny any help with your condition, then forgive my skepticism that he suddenly wakes up after 1993's forced treatment and decides he wants to be a better man.

IMO Life should mean life. You don't release murderers / rapists / child molesters. You either lock them up or execute them. Nothing in between. If you don't have capital punishment you enforce the full sentence for crimes like these. Let the fucker rot in jail.

I can see their point - you don't try and rehabilitate substantially, and you're seen as heartless social service bastards. You do so to the best of your ability and someone reoffends, and you're the villain there too. Hard work doing that job imo.

In Sutcliffe's case though, he resisted optional treatment for so long that I don't believe he's just 'mentally ill' - I think he has some malice or misplaced religious zeal behind his actions (the 'god told me to do it' was a traditional cop out for supposed nutcases throughout the 70's, 80's & early 90's tbh for western serial killers).

It's a case of NIMBY for most I suspect. I like the idea of rehabilitation but, no, I don't want this serial killer living anywhere near me. In fact, I don't want him EVER to be able to get out because he could break parole and travel - if he's killed many people I don't think the parole breaking will worry him.

Stay in jail please Mr murdering twat. (Oh and 30 years? wtf? He ended 13 peoples' loves. He shouldn't be let out).

Well said. Life should be fucking life for the crimes it is suitable for. Not that I am a member of the judiciary but hey, the term speaks for itself.

I do believe in rehabilitation but not for this guy 30 years for all them dead is a joke. The argument that he is wrong in the head is redundant of course he is all serial killers are they are all wired wrong or they would see what they were doing is wrong. So the fact he is a nutter prone to killing women for my money means he stays locked up and drugged up till he dies.

He's safer in prison. He's already been attacked umpteen times in there by other inmates and thats light relief compared to what might happen if he gets out and any disappearing act is less than perfect.

As said, he's legally entitled to apply for parole. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Getting parole is another matter entirely and I don't see it happening.

Some countries had/do still have a maximum amount of time allowed in jail for crimes.

So you could in theory murder 200 people and get away with 25-30 years of your time in exchange for the loss of 1000+ years of other peoples lifes.

Crazy.

Yeah I've read about him, but his way was wimpy as fuck! Killing old bitches with an overdosis of morphine? Any doctor could do that over a long period of time..

Cho got 32 in one day... ONE day dude! And that's not even counting himself!

I think it's very sad that everyone and his dog assumes that he will be released. He is simply appealing for early release, it's very very unlikely to happen.

Aye, people seem to miss this. He is fully entitled to apply and it would be wrong to block him from applying.

People seem to be leaping straight to the fear of having a mass murderer in the high street that doesn't have golden arches :D

I think a lot of us were arguing Toht's post or indeed looking at the theoritical stance of him being released.

We're not all so linear ya'know ;)

Good point that, if he gets out, he'll likely get murdered. Shame will be that some people will cheer for that murderer, because obviously murder isn't murder, but murderers hould eb all killed? :eek7:

Crazy.

That's how our society has evolved. Laws are like this, it's not crazy, it's part of this thriving and growing democracy you defended on the other thread. Laws have limits, punishments aren't eye for an eye.

It's funny how people pick and choose which traits of humanity should be like this. Imagine when they go speeding "just over 3 mph", they would cry murder if their car got taken away along with license for life.

It would be fair right? Regarding the tone here.

BTW Bugz; you can be skeptical about his changed mind, but i did say maybe. It's a possibility and the people choosing if he's released or not should, as they are our chosen peers to do so, make the call and by every standard, we should say ok to that decicion. Otherwise we're not civilized, we're just picky cave people.

Isn't that fair?

I post a random fact, you post 'useless shit' in reply. Thanks?

I think you'll find that your reply here is the one that's useless. Just another insult thrown.

Your post said it's crazy, I answered why it's not crazy, that it's how this society works and also how it's related to the pick&choose of punishments which seem to fluxuate on every thread with people.

Don't you agree? Do you agree that people aren't consistent with their wants on legal system?

Try that instead of throwing a pointless insult.

Firstly, I have no idea whether said countries are democractic or not.

Secondly, it's only a small handful of countries I presume who take this stance.

Thirdly, some of them, i.e. Chille, have changed this law to allow a person to be detained near indefinitely. Showing a wider boundary in the limit of law.

Fourthly, countries DO and CAN pick and choose punishments - much like people here do. Harold Shipman would never be given the opportunity to be released. Sutcliffe has that option.

Fiftly, your analogy to driving 3 mph over the limit and having your car taken away for life is fail. Firstly, these murderers have killed 50-100+ people. So it'd be the equivalent of you being CAUGHT for speeding 50-100 times. Secondly, murder is a null comparison to speeding 3 mph over the limit UNLESS that 3 mph kills/injures/stresses/harms someone else. It's why a lot of counties use a 10% tolerance level.

Carry on showering your words of wisdom at me though. Where would we all be without you!

Haha, owned :p

Not owned, just trying not to get into arguments with people like that.

All Bugz did was take one reply, wrapped it all around his own quote(like no one else existed in this thread) and ignored what i even answered.

Throw in a "witty" insult at the end and i can't be arsed with him.
