Just out of interest, daoc'ers

Not a flame, just a question:

What's brought so many daoc peeps into PS? I've seen loads of them so far, and wor lass (Leah for anyone who should recognise the name) tells me that loads of daoc people have eloped with PS.

Why does it interest you so much? I understand the large scale combat thing being of interest, but real-time FPS combat? I'm curious.

because you don't have to kill lesser frogs for 2 months before you can have fun

everyone has 100 hp

when thats gone, they die

no uber classes

slight grind, was hardly any in beta,

oh, and this game is damn fun

And there's not so much problem finding squads, I don't think I've ever not been able to find a squad.

Add to that, people seem a lot less concerned with dying (because it essentially means very little) so you don't get all the "FFS YOU MORON YOU JUST KILLED US ALL!"

Oh and the major thing is what Silverhood said. You don't have to kill lesser frogs for 2 months before you can take part in the action.

I NEVER managed to get a 50 char (I'm a bit of an alt monkey) and so RvR was not particularly fun for me. This game, I can do OK in without having to be a particular level, or a particular spec, and if I decide I don't like the spec I've got, I can respec :)

They moved because:

Daoc got old and boring!

:)

And when SWG comes out, we'll all move again....or at least buy an SOE all access account.

($22 a month for access to all Sony games like EQ2, SWG, PS. Going to be real useful if Sony keep churning out these quality mmo's)

SoE don't publish SWG, Lucas Arts does, so the SoE all pass wont include SWG :/

So why has it taken so long to realise that ;->

Especially when there's such ... err ... quality online games like A Tale In the Desert ....

Err ...

I think daoc was the last to milk the old EQ formula...people want different stuff thesedays.

new stuff.

If i see one more box that has HP, END, and MANA listed in it, ill probably get a bit upset.

Simple DAoC is Crap and PS is not

PS is good hard fun while DAoC is a boring old relic

In your opinion maybe. But remember, a lot of people play DAoC and love it. Not everyone likes the same thing, which is good imo :p

My simple answer is time.

I dont have the time to piss around making groups in DAoC anymore, or crafting for hours, or xping on the same mob indefinitely.

Busy life atm, PS i can pick up and play when i want to and put down when i want to without getting flamed for leaving a group without giving an hours notice so they can get a replacement :(

Other thing is that DAoC is getting too Elitist for my liking, too many players who are more concerned with being "Uber" than having fun.

PS is similar to how DaoC was when it first started; RvR was new, 3 teams of people, some knowing what to do and some not, all fighting but not bothered to much about dying as we had more fun so the wait was worth it. But in DaoC you die and you have to wait a minimum of 10 mins for any action. PS you can start fighting again in 30s to 1 min.
I remember over a weekend in DaoC on excal we had masses of action, everyone had fun. That was rare tbh, PS has been like that every day.

DaoC is a good game, but many people have been getting bored of it, just been waiting for a game that is worth playing. Atm, that's PS :)

i agree about that mate

daoc is a still a good game but it slowly becomes a way of life and requires way too much time to play

i should get PS on wednesday and i'm looking forward to having a go of it after what i've read and seen :D

I got bored of DAoC but didn't really realise till i played the beta of PS. So much more fun, just couldn't be arsed to load up DAoC after that. Not sure how long it'll last me but as long as it takes me to Everquest 2 or World of Warcraft i don't care :).

daoc died about 6 months back for me , but there wasnt anything else good out there. thank god for PS

instead of this TOA pack or Foundations they desperately need to release the RVR xp pack asap - rvr needs new zones NOW :)

before SWG etc all arrive , altho that could b a g00d thing :)

PS is cool, but i'm sure the novelty will wear off pretty quickly, once you have had a good crack at all the different professions, vehicles etc. Got a good rank etc it will wear thin, and in two months time you will all be on the next game saying..

"Just out of interest, PS'ers, why are so many of you now playing UberMMPOG of the day"

Just the way it goes, but I think PS will last a far shorter time than DAoC ever did, merely because its so focused on one thing..

I don't think any of us are convinced by the longevity of PS, unless there's some serious work put in by the devs.

My question was more around the sudden shift in gaming paradigm - I'm not one to pigeon hole people, but functionaly speaking PS is a world apart from daoc.

I guess the main difference between daoc and PS, and the reason why PS might not keep the numbers up as long as the former, is that the main selling point of camelot was the end-game. Get a high level char and take it rvr. With PS you can do that right from the start, so you don't need to play it for 8 months before you're in a position to play the game properly.

A lot of people are waiting round for SWG, I suppose as well. Interesting that the combat's more like PS than your EQ's or daoc's or whatever, as well.

I might get Will to post a vote, seeing how long people have subscribed to PS for .....

Thank you, test subjects.

Aye, precisely. This game you can pick up and blast.

If you play VS and want an outfit, let me know. We've got so many daoc players it seems like a second home o_O

I'm not surprised that people have moved from DAOC to PS. There's much that is similar: large-scale, multi-realm PvP; squad/group-based action with specialist roles; and a strategic layer on top.

I see PS as a cross between CS and DAOC. It will, therefore, attract players from both sides.

Also, I don't think DAOC & PS are mutually exclusive. I reckon I'll keep playing both. It's good to have something else to switch to when things start getting you down.

One thing I like about PS above DAOC is the fact that all players are equal.
None of this "You can't join this group 'cos you're 10 levels lower than us and the exp will suck" business.
All right, some players will still suck since they've only had the game ten minutes, but, nobody cares a bit, because the game has no ultimate goals to win or lose.

And maybe that will be it's downfall. Unless the devs do come up with an ultimate aim, there could be a "running out of steam" effect with some players.

I experienced this myself last night, I just couldn't be arsed to carry on any longer. I will of course go back tonight, but after 6 hours on and off playing on Tuesday, I got a little bit....hmmm...bored of the same old thing.

Some very good points made, tbh I agree with most of them.

Add in the fact that you've got no risk of playing for 300 hours only to get your precious character nerfed to buggery just before 50 ( pfft Avalonian sorcs suck ). Or alternatively Mythic will create a new uber class and the Mcl337 clan will immediately PL 2 FG's of them, own everything and do exactly the same when the next uber class gets created. I do like the way you can trade in skills for new ones with very little penalty.

Although, as with other posters, I'm also very concerned about the longevity of PS - at the moment its not that much more than a glorified version of Tribes 2. Can't really see where they are taking this game in the medium term.

Still not much of an ultimate goal.

Would like to see more benefits from actually defending/owning different base types. Kinda like "realm relics" in DAOC.
