I was one of the opers Peakes talked to the same night this happend. Why iolaire didnt message is probably cause he knew what was going on.

Its quite amusing when people assume that just because a person hasn't been idling with them in #barrysworld and/or #feds being l33t for the past seventeen years then they're an intellectually challenged newbie with birth defects (although in oldies case at least two of these are in fact true). Most, if not all, of the people you've been arguing with have been IRCing for the better side of 5 years, and we lap up the kind of response you've given us.
In any case, I think we can say we've wrapped this up. General consensus is Iolaire didn't do any harm, all things considered, and IRCop nicks should be protected *in general*. (I mean, ok, the fake Iolaire wasn't doing any harm, but then he wasn't doing anything at all.)
Couple of more worrying things however: like an ircop openly admitting that sometimes he can't do the job because of work and family commitments. YES we sympathise with you, having a real life and all that; YES most of us haven't and probably ought to get one (lo oldie); but surely that's the point - I would have thought ircops need to be able to commit themselves whenever they're needed (which wouldn't be too often given the number of opers these days). After all, there's no kudos in doing a voluntary job if you don't actually do the job.
That probably sounds really harsh, but there you go. Only be an ircop if you really really want to have a crap job that takes up most of your time and for no pay? something like that.

I've used IRC for over 8 years now. Initially on efnet (and later both efnet and ircnet, after "the split") I was known as "Deanie", and I met a few people who were also so nicked, but not that many.
Then, four years ago, I moved to quakenet, and used the gaming name I'd used for 10 years, which is "Morpheus", named after the "Sandman" comics, by Neil Gaiman. Of course, for the longest time I had no problems, then that rather popular film "The Matrix" came out, and the whole of IRC and the internet generally was swamped with other people called "Morpheus". Feckers.
It's very rare that I get my nick properly, and I'm not that fussed, I usually pop a [CIX] at the front, or put a _ or ^ at the end.
Those people who know me, know who I am.

Someone nicked my name a while ago too, his name was Sparky, then it was Pea!, hmmmmmm, as he was an immature little peasant, he kept abusing people in public channels, and in Q2 too, so i got shit, from people i didnt know, wtf is that about.
Bloody sucks, alot of ppl still dont know it was someone else, and when i find them on ICQ after a while of not speaking, they moan abt what i said in #quake2.uk or on some q2 server somewhere.

Oh yea, i was a UKCCL Admin (Season 5), and then this guy tried to make up, took his old name back and everything, sucked up for at least 3 months then eventually managed to get me to make him a UKCCL admin, cos he seemed quite pleasant at the time, then after getting to Admin status, he instantly started spreading shit around the place, so i just gave everything up, well, life wasnt the same after <HooD> died anyway, so i just turned into "IRC Idler".. bit shit, but then i found Planetarion (May 2000)(First Round), then Runescape, then Cockle Fighting!!, Yea!!!!!!!!.
