Recently i had a friend of mine "diesel" have his nickname taken by some swedish guy, which is fair enough
we (#glasgow) asked iolaire if he could do anything about it, he said it was against network policy to intervene in nickname disputes, which is fair enough......
but
one of my friend took "iolaire" as a nickname, and when iolaire woke up, the client was glined, with no questioning, no query, no inquiry at all
and when i msgd iolaire about it, all i got is that it was "network policy" to kill people impersonating others
and after an hour and a half of argueing i was forwarded to another ircop who didnt speak english full
PLEASE reply here if you think this is as screwed up as i do

yet another case of IRCOP double standards :(
we see this all too often on quakenet now 'i'll help you when it suits me to help you, but i'll do whatever i like to help myself', and if this wasnt bad enough, most of them have massive EGO's and go on power trips.
im begining to think they just sit in #feds to boost thier ego a little more and ignore the users who actually need their help.

When i was a lad my name was Q. Then this fking bot thing came along and suddenly I could never get my name back. Bloody disgraceful :(((((

Now the only times I can get my nick back are when the servers go down, i.e. most weeknights.

Nah seriously tho I think most people are fed up with how anal ircops are about everything under the sun these days. And their excuse is always that they're too busy, and they have day jobs etc, or that its voluntary and we shouldn't be moaning cos they do it out of the kindness of their heart.

Doesn't mean they still can't be shit at it tho.

I know this is all very general. I (sort of) know many good ircops myself. As is the case with most things in life it just seems to be spoilt by a few twats. In the case of ircops these are the kind of ppl who manage to blag their way into 'power' when really theyre 12 years old and won't do shit to help anyone. And then there's the power and greed. While this is certainly an issue on most irc networks (PAnet in particular) I'm not sure its much of an issue on Quakenet. But if it was, Iolaire would be a prime example (except the 12yo bit, heh).

To be fair to ircops in general, tho, nick disputes are an annoying problem they can't really do anything about. Its too late to put a NickServ in (cos it'll obviously just start more disputes) and there isn't usually any reason to action (nicks being more convenience than anything else.)

This particular incident, however, is quite clearly double standards.

Yeah really man, those QuakeNet opers just suck. I mean, we paid them all those 0s and 0s of dollars, and what do we get in return? The 6th largest IRC net in the world, with the fewest splits and the coolest users anywhere! And Q, wtf is up with that shit?

This whole place blows. Those dumb IRCops can't /kill a user just 'cause he's impersonating an IRCop! I mean, that's just wrong!

And that Loki guy really gets on my tits too. Let's hear how many people hate him? He's a dumb yank, thought it would be cool to steal some Norse god's name....

dont get me wrong, the network is great, ive been on for approaching 5 years
the problem i have is the mentality where ircop are a class above normal users "too busy" or "cant get involved" in a normal users complaints, bus AS SOON as EXACTLY the same thing happens to an ircop (ie nickname iss taken by someone else) the users is killed off , with NO inquiry, for all iolaire knew, it could have been a legit claim at the name, as it turns out it wasnt, but for all he knew it wasnt. There fore he killed purely for his own gain, which im sure is against some rule/policy somewhere, i wont pretend ive looked into it, i havent, but purely from a simple user point of view, this is FUCKED UP.
After over an hour of getting bad excuses from iolaire i was forwarded onto an ircop who didnt speak full engligh, and he wasnt fully understanding what i was saying = lame on iolaires part.
and in reply to you, noone except loki knew i was talking to him, so obviously you are either loki posting under alias, or someone who has only been told the story from loki's singleminded, rather err.... for want of a better word, dim view of the subject.
what i have said here and in my prev post is exactly what has happened
ive yet to receive a satisfactory reason for the kill, im a reasonable guy, pretty intelligent.......
"impersonating ircop" doesnt hold with me, as the client was in no challens, msging noon, and received no msgs in 9 hours, and evern if it had he would have told him he wasnt the ircop iolaire
so basically "ircop impersonation" is the best excuse iolaire could come up with on the spot for getting his nickname back
feel free to flame or whatever, all i want is an apology/legit reason, all ive had so far is toss from a stuck up Oper or a policy from the network in general that is being utterly bent out of context

I wasn't making a statement inferring the ineptitude of Quakenet IRCops; I was merely saying that in IRC in general, and with IRCops in general, you always get the few who fuck everything up. I couldn't really put it any clearer.

You went out of your way to impersonate an IRCop? And you're surprised you/he got glined? heh.

I shant make a point, it'd take too much time. But I do wonder why you even bothered an IRCop with a name issue, fs its a nick, add ^ or - after your name or something, most of the rest of us manage it, or if you're that worried about being 'impersonated' (read: sharing a common name) get a bouncer.

Right, as a respected member of quakenet (and i am NOT sucking up to the oppers here) I feel obliged to add a few points.


There is NO nickservice on Quakenet for good reason. It is old, underused, and on a network mainly for Quake related stuff, lots of people have the same name - so a first come first serve idea is a lot more efficient without doubt. If your nick is taken - put a "-" or "`" or something after it. That isn't difficult and people still know who you are.

As far as the Iolaire incident : it IS an offence to take the nick of an active IRC Opper, as the oppers are there providing a service, people can actually believe the person using the ops name IS an opper himself and cause lots of havoc and what not.

What you have said in this thread so far is 90% bullshit i'm afraid, and also you seem to be misunderstood. What iolare told you was more then likely just bad choice of wording. We all make mistakes. Correct yours, and stop moaning.

Obviously Reaps was 'asking for it' when he left a client connected called Iolaire, because, after all, it was there to prove a point and expose the double standards of *some* ircops. What he/it wasn't doing, however, was impersonating Iolaire, trying to gain oper status, etc, all it was doing was idling. Not even in #glasgow, so it wouldn't have been clear it was a revenge attack against Iolaire. Yet apparently the client still didn't get even so much as a msg.

Normally I don't like to speak out against folk that do good work in their spare time, in fact I know exactly what they have to do, I've been an oper on a diff network. However that network DID have a nickserv, so disputes like this didn't really exist.

Anyways...

About 6months ago, I took the name "walt0r^" using a bx client, I thought it'd be a groovy name for a bot or something, and should a user who wanted the name come along, I'd give it up and rename my bot. However I was messaged by the oper known as MindPhuck, whose irish afaik, a friend of a guy called "walter" or something.

In any case this walter character wanted the nick, and I was told in no uncertain terms that people who "stole" nicks weren't wanted on the network. In fact if I didn't change my name or leave, I would be glined from the network.

I don't know if he wants to comment on this, but I have a log kicking about somewhere, well I should have. But in any case, it would seem that double standards exist on QNet.

Not much fun is it?

it seems strange how when a nick was stolen from 'diesel' and had been idle for 6 days was sitting in no channels but yet every oper we ask gave us "nobody has any more right to a nick on QuakeNet than anyone else" or somthing along those lines, but when an opers nick is taken its killed no questions asked because its in their own interests.
