Is it finished do you think?

I know some people here dont use it, but a lot of people used to, particularly for clans and what have you.

Nowadays hardly anyone does, I notice our #xatrix channel is nearly empty this morning, which is unheard-of. You can say what you like about it, it it does engender a kind of community that the other instant message things dont do.

But latley I see loads of people dont bother, it makes me wonder :(

Throd, classic situation with regard to a group of people.

Over time people will leave the group and numbers will dwindle. That doesnt mean the pub (or channel, or network) they were is not as popular as it used to be, its just that your group is shrinking due to whatever (at a guess id say people growing up and getting families on the go).

Its nothing like MSN.

Chilly you may be right, it was always me and Trem and Lester I seem to remember back in teh ol days (tm) that did most of the talking, but then we all had to get proper jobs and it kind of messed it up :)

I just wondered though, as we have been going for donkeys years ,but now most of the css clans we play on ED dont use their irc, even though its in the rules that they should.

IRC started dying years ago throddeh.

But yes, my lack of internet has meant that going on IRC now is largely worthless. :p

mirc is the first prog i launch when i boot up my pc or laptop - FACT!

of all the channels i've frequented over the past five or six years, the mainstay has been #sqs - anyone who played ra2 will probably remember them. somehow the channel has remained active despite everyone growing up, getting proper jobs, having families, so on and so forth. it doesn't seem to be dying at all :)

the FH channel is always pretty busy as well

Like people have said, its culture turn over.

People who previously populated a channelmove on and noone new is recruited to replace them, channel numbers drop.

While other games, like WoW for example, have channel pops over that on the main FH channel.

Quakenet connection numbers have been rising year on year the last few years as i understand it. I guess the community just moves around :)

I had a pet spider called Margaret but she died when I tried to have sex with her.

I know what it's like to lose a dear friend.

I came to BW through irc after finding irc through CS and MCNP.

I'm still on there most days, now in just 2 channels. One only has about 5 people in regularly, and another 3 or 4 who drop in. We've known each other for years, it's private, so random people don't join and it's only very rare that a new person is admitted. I think I was the last newbie about 4 years ago.

The other which I frequent is older than my use of irc, but is a similar group of people that have known each other for years. Again, a core of perhaps 7 or 8 regular users, and another 7 or 8 old friends that drop in now and again. With this one though, new blood comes in with new games, even though most of us in there barely play anymore. Every now and again we'll get a little hard on for a game, and play it for a month or two. As we tend to all bundle onto servers together, it attracts attention and people track us down. A couple of the guys in there have their own server aswell, I don't mean rented from a provider, actually their own box in a telecoms centre, which will usually host whatever game we're playing at the time. Sometimes these people stay with us, other times they fade away. A lot of the guys have got into TF2 lately, which has meant the return of a lot of old Team Fortress buddies, and some new blood again. This has swelled the numbers to about 20, but in a couple of months I would think it'll be back down to 12 or so again.

We're all having proper grown up lives and stuff now, which means people often dissappear for periods. A bunch have kids now, I have one on the way myself, but around Christmas time people will show up and say Hi. I imagine I'll be the same if I ever stop using irc regularly, but I'm damn sure that the channel will remain for a long time to come, as it's the facilitator for some great friendships.

First popped onto Quakenet specifically in early 1997 on the advise of a nearby friend. Soon started playing Quake with a bunch of folks I found on it, soon afterwards found Barrysworld.
Couple of years later and I end up as support staff for Quakenet and I'm still idling and nattering on it like a grumpy old git to this day.

But without a doubt it's popularity is dwindling. I don't think it's likely to die a death. Quakenet is still the largest IRC network by a long way with an average of 170,000 users daily - however this is a far cry from its peak of over 250,000 consecutive unique users in February 2005, and the same patterns are repeated across all the IRC networks.

I do find it suprising when you look at the likes of Facebook, Bebo, Myspace and all those fucking dreadful sites - they are used more often for simple communication than IRC is however are fair less ideally suited. MSN and the likes are still popular but that's a different sort of audience again.

There are some parts of IRC that will secure it as a widely usable medium for many years - online support systems for companies use it often, dev chats (quite a few on Quakenet these days, the one a while ago for QW:ET a while ago was fantastic with a lot of the folks from ID software there answering questions). It's certainly well tied up with gaming - it's a million times better than anything else for communicating and organising online gaming - so therefore perhaps the shifts in gaming types is having an impact on it.

Of course I think I personally enjoy the more "personal" level of interaction - I still run an advice channel (#advice, suprisingly) which is in-conjuction with Quakenet's own support services and find a lot of people like the real time help they can get for nearly any subject, myself included.

It'll be around in years to come, theres not a great deal more to change or improve with it though.

I still use IRC when I can. It's nice to idle with people you've known online for years and see what they're up to. :)

I'm actually having problems with IRC (shocking, I know) lately, in that I keep receiving this message,

You are infected with a trojan, please clean your PC (ID: 379).
-
[07:51] Closing Link: Mobius- by blueyonder1.uk.quakenet.org (G-lined)

----

I have run numerous virus scans etc, and everything is clean. I think it's something to do with my connection because it often says connection throttled or something. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue? :( I'll be fine for hours then I'll get G-Lined again, so I'm not sure if it's somebody doing it manually?

Get in touch with an oper, or read up on the quakenet FAQ to see exactly where that error comes from (it may or may not be documented). To get an oper, go into #help or #feds (or just ask zarjazz/lecter in #freddyshouse).

FS Trem the greenfly story was SERIOUS, it fell off the net curtain and banged its head !!!

Anyway, I start IRC first of all programs too, Im glad to see other people do too. I onlt started this as I said because our channel seems so dead nowadays, in the daytime, and in the evening its quite full but all with ops most of whom dont speak much, which is compounded by the fact that we have a private channel and people tend to speak in there anyway.

I miss lots of +v's , and I miss being able to sit all day chatting at work too :(

I've tried finding out the reason behind the ban and even made a thread on the quakenet forum about it but they don't seem to know! Unfortunately I can't seem to connect to IRC at all now, so I'm unable to PM an oper or anyone. :(

Mobius,

There's something on *your computer* that is triggering this - obviously the first thing is a worm, trojan or virus, which you've already eliminated.
Some of these nasties do leave behind residual shit that AV software doesn't find, and you can eliminate these by uninstalling your IRC client entirely then manually deleting any leftover files or registry keys.
Reinstall your client from fresh, minus any scripts or additions you might have used in the past and you'll probably find problem solved.

Some other things do trigger that ban - simply saying certain lines of text in a channel with Quakenet's random bot type things can get you a ban - that text being one of the triggers for a certain type of virus or worm.

If still no joy, PM me on here and I'll look into it further. Im no longer support staff or really affilated with Quakenet but still keep track of goings on :)
Not much the opers can really do about it - the system is there for everyone elses protection and it's not something they can add exceptions to like a local anti virus package. I'd imagine the above steps will sort it out though :)

Thing is, I don't know about you lot but I don't actually "use" MSN, it's just installed. I don't take any notice of it when it goes "X has signed in". To me it's like they took ICQ but removed all the good points and turned it into an on-line status indicator with an advert at the bottom.

Plus, how much ram does the thing need tbfh?

I think you have to blame facebook.

Facebook is the source of all evil.
