Hi Brynn

I don't really use IRC all that much, but from a quick Google search ...

Net split Netsplits, also known as Network Splits, unfortunately, are an unavoidable part of IRC. Since IRC uses the Internet, IRC depends on the Internet's state at any given point. Netsplits occur when the connection of one or more server breaks with another server (for whatever reason). The network will break into two, separate halves.

Net Splits are a common occurrence on IRC. When you log onto a server there is a net connection between you and your server. When you are chatting with someone else they also have a net connection between them and their server. The two servers are also connected through the net. A net split is when a connection along the path loses it's connection. You become disconnected from the others you are talking to until the connections are re-established. It will appear as either you or some others have left the room. You can minimize splits somewhat by being connected to the same server as the person(s) you are chatting with. Some channels post a recommendation that you use a specific server.
As I recall they're genuinely nothing to worry about, just an inconvenience.

Kind Regards

to explain it simple say irc servers are conected like this :

A --- B --- C --- D

Now if samething happens with the connection between A and B

A -/ B --- C --- D

All the people on server A would only see the other people on server A
All the people on servers B,C and D would nolonger be able to see the people on server A

thats a netsplit in simple terms
