Ipod problems

Recently I noticed that whenever i plug in my ipod via USB to my comp, it recognizes it as a portable hard drive but itunes doesn't seem to see it as a source to update. I've tried everything i can think of, short of reinstalling XP. Anybody have any suggestions?

download the latest ipod updater and reflash it?

Check you've got the latest version of iTunes (6.0) and (as leggy suggests) the latest iPod software.

Try different USB ports if you can, or an external hub if you've got it. I've had one or two connectivity issues with my iPod, but they kinda went away just by fiddling with it.

You could try creating a new user account on Windows XP and seeing if it will connect through that, just in case you've got some software in the background that's interfering with the iPod. Seems unlikely, but it beat reinstalling XP (that shouldn't be necessary at all, btw)
