WhatsApp - for 59 pence you can message anyone else with this app for free. It works on Blackberry and Iphone.
Sky Sports Football SC - It has the text printer like Sky Sports Score Center its good for when you cant watch the game.
Kindle - ereader app with access to Amazons Kindle store. If you have more than one devices it syncs book marks across them, so iPhone train iPad home will stay in sync

Some random stuff I use on my phone...

NDrive - costs a fiver and does full voice sat nav. Interface is a bit clunky but gets you where you want to go and all maps are local to the device so no need for data.

acrossair - free. Works best on a 3GS (or iphone4 I guess) as it creates an augmented reality using the camera, gps and compass. e.g. it'll find nearest pubs and show you where and how far they are. Instant wiki search for nearby points of boredom. Also has a google search built in so you can pretty much search for anything as long as someone's taken the time to plumb the co-ords into google.

Marvel Comic book reader - plenty of free comics and it presents them in a pretty interesting way.

Is there an app that shows you how to hold it?

I don't understand what you're getting at.If you're using an app you generally hold it in front of you and look at it.If using it as a phone you hold it to the side of your head and talk.I use mine mostly as an ipod,so i do neither.

he was taking a dig at the bridging of the antennas issue on the 4g. which is a problem for peeps use it without a bumper or case

Plants v Zombies

Fruit Ninja

Some already mentioned by Yaks, but for jailbroken phones (and you have no excuse now 4.2.1 is available);

SBSettings - gesture access (even from the lockscreen) to widgets for common functions, very customisable. Examples, wifi toggle, 3g toggle, airplane toggle. Built in task killer.
Lockinfo - Expanded notifications on your lockscreen, calendar appointments, missed calls, sms's etc.
Bitesms - Brilliant sms app. Well worth paying for, although you can use it free with ads.
iadkiller - blocks and removes ads from apps.
winterboard - must have for themes
backboard - easy saving of theme settings, and one click switching between them.

From Cydia;

Fake Operator - let's you spoof your operator name. The old app to do it does not work for ios 4 devices.

Hi,

I'm not the Owner of a iPhone 4, and have to admit I wished I did it sooner lol, lovely price of kit.

Question though, what are the benefits of jailbraking the iPhone? Is it easy and can I screw it up etc?

Easy, even if you screw it up you can restore your phone via itunes.

Benefits; customisation, from complete themes that change everything to greater control over sounds. Cydia app store - great range of apps that let you change all sorts, and let you access features faster, alternatives for stock apple apps (such as bitesms).

I really see no downside to jailbreaking what so ever. It takes about 5 minutes, and a complete beginner can do it.

Is there a jailbreaking guide to follow then?

Sync your phone with iTunes and unless you've adjusted the default settings it will make the backup.

I'm going to chip in with a stupid question or two...

(1) Is there any data loss with jailbreaking? Is the phone wiped clean back to default settings? Is any app data I had before lost?

(2) Do all apps bought from the app store continue to work normally?

Not that I've seen & Apple recently botched iBooks on jailbreak devices but otherwise I don't believe so.

After about a year with my 3gs, I decided to have a go at jailbreaking it. It all seemed to go OK, cydia is on and running, and I can install and run apps from it. However...
Since performing the jailbreak, google maps is not loading any map data. I can access the maps in safari, and google earth works fine, but maps will just show a grid, with no actual map images. The gps is working, as it shows my location fine in google earth and shows the dot on maps. It just doesn't load the map data.
Has anyone else came across this, and does anyone know of a fix for it?

Nope. try jailbreaking again over the top? Or see if there is an update for google maps? Is your data connection working okay?

Tried it again later on, and it's working fine now, without changing anything. *shrugs*
Anyone got any suggestions of any decent repositories to add for cydia?

Chet, how are you liking the iPhone 4?

I have to say, I haven't even looked or thought about another phone since I got mine.

Yeah it's great BUT only truly great once jailbroken. It's pretty mundane till then, although it works fine, it's boring.

It's certainly more solidly built then any phone I've had before, very slick, and I've had no issues with it at all yet.

It's very very good with tom tom too.
