Apart from the screen upgrade and the quad core processor and the 4g radio you are right there is no difference! Also Apple products are like Android products you don't actually have to upgrade and they do target new customers.

I skipped the iPad 2 because it didn't have Retina, but they've finally done it so I am likely to buy one as I have been swithering over a tablet for close to 12 months now. This is the product the iPad 2 should have been, but Apple are in it to *shock* make money.

Again you do not have to upgrade from the 1 > 2 it is not like the 1 just stops working as soon as the 2 is released. And again I ask go and find the spec difference between the first and the current Samsung Tab. Every company does it but people piss their pants with rage when Apple offer a new device. If you have a iPad 1 or just want the most polished tablet on the market the iPad 3 is a real option. If you have a iPad 2 its not. But again despite what people believe you can keep your iPad 2 you don't have to upgrade.

Actually, Gman, I kinda believe that our requirements aren't that messed up at all, but rather that people like you and I are just being FUCKED by marketeers. well its the first step in retooling the internet into something we can incorporate into the core of our lives, the mouse/keyboard/desktop is holding back innovation..and yes touchscreen tablets have been around for years, but it took apple to perfect the layout and make everyone think outside their little microshite box.
without apple we would still be using devices designed by nerds for their own convenience settings...keyboards...properties...shift on/off....apply

See. This is why I haven't bought a tablet. I don't need one. Sure a larger screen would be nice, but for me, the limit is whats holdable in one hand, and I don't want to use something the size of a tablet as my phone/camera. When I'm at home, I've got my PC.

I don't have a tablet on my shopping list for much the same reasons as Lamp.
This BB Playbook from work has some features that make it ok for reading manuals when I'm on a customer's site, typing up an email, and playing the odd game of Tetris. Yes, I can play media on it, and yes I can use my work phone as a remote control, and yes I can hook it up to a TV with HDMI. At the end of the day, I still wouldn't buy one for myself. I still reach for my own mobile if/when I want to check something online and I'm away from my laptop.

Unlike Turamber, I don't multiscreen. If I'm looking at my phone then I'm not looking at the TV, and vice-versa. The Walking Dead was on last night and I missed a lot of what was going on because I was too busy removing AirPush from my wife's S2. I had to back up about 5mins worth to catch the critical part of the episode.

It seems to me that tablets have already been decided as the "next big thing" by the tech companies, as shown by MS forcing the Metro UI on users of Win8 CP. If tablets are going to be the future, we need a HELL of an improvement in usability because the UX isn't comparable right now to a desktop PC. They also need to be made childproof, because a 10" screen going crack isn't a sound anyone wants to hear.

A Tablet is not the future on its own. But a Tablet with a desktop dock so you plug it in at work then you can use gesture controls like the Kinnect to control your machine. IMO at work you will keep the keyboard but the mouse could be replaced. I would like a future where I could keep my pc and my data with me on a tablet. Dock it at work to give it a performance bump if needed then pick it up at the end of the day and have a tablet that still has full functionality.
